His bankruptcies have crushed small businesses and the men and women who worked for them. He inherited his business, he didn’t create it. And what ever happened to Trump Airlines? How about Trump University? And then there’s Trump Magazine and Trump Vodka and Trump Steaks, and Trump Mortgage? A business genius he is not.

Is there any successful businessperson who doesn’t have 5 failed businesses for every one that turns out successful? I know I do. Highlighting the fact that he has businesses that did badly shows us nothing except that he is the type of businessman who keeps trying new things. Plenty of his businesses worked out.

To avoid criticism say nothing do nothing be nothing. Like him or hate him, Trump is a doer. That gives people more ammunition against him than against a do-nothing like Rubio, true, but if we only look at detractors then no accomplished person can ever be a Presidential candidate.

    -1 Romney

He claimed that he had spoken clearly and boldly against going into Iraq. Wrong, he spoke in favor of invading Iraq. He said he saw thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrating 9/11. Wrong, he saw no such thing. He imagined it. His is not the temperament of a stable, thoughtful leader.

Hillary saw snipers firing at her when she visited Bosnia. Romney made a campaign ad against Obama in 2012 claiming that he (Obama) had ‘sold Chrysler to the Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China’. There is no way to prove or disprove Trump’s allegation that Muslims celebrated in NJ after 9/11 (we can prove that they celebrated in the Middle East with video) – so he should not have said it. But if that means anything about his eligibility to be a candidate, then Romney has no shot either, and he should be firing at Hillary too.

    -2 Romney

On the Iraq quote, there’s little to say. Calling out a candidate for having changed positions? Wow, how unusual.

    -3 Romney

Mr. Trump is directing our anger for less than noble purposes. He creates scapegoats of Muslims and Mexican immigrants, he calls for the use of torture and for killing the innocent children and family members of terrorists. He cheers assaults on protesters. He applauds the prospect of twisting the Constitution to limit first amendment freedom of the press. This is the very brand of anger that has led other nations into the abyss.

Which nations exactly? Trump is appealing to the lowest common denominator in our society, and I don’t award him any points for that. But this is a democracy, and if the democracy wants to be xenophobic then they can be. And if you’re not in the majority, you can always still vote with your feet (and I don’t mean just doing an internet search for how to emigrate).

Donald Trump says he admires Vladimir Putin, while has called George W. Bush a liar. That is a twisted example of evil trumping good.

There is a lot to admire about Putin. He is a strong leader who does what he thinks is in his country’s best interests, and doesn’t worry about what people will say or what his legacy will look like (contrast with Obama). He made Russia a free country, where you can come and go as you wish, and where you can be religious or not. He is a nationalist and he fixed the Russian debt. I can admire those qualities and still recognize that Putin is basically a dictator and I would not want to live in a country that he is in charge of.

And W. Bush is a liar. He lied about the motivation for invading Iraq, he lied about how long we would be in there and how much it would cost. Unpopular as it may be to call a former president of your own party a liar, it isn’t a “twisted example of evil trumping good”. Whatever that’s supposed to mean.

Eyeroll at Romney for this one.

A few examples: His proposed 35 percent tariff-like penalties would instigate a trade war that would raise prices for consumers, kill export jobs and lead entrepreneurs and businesses to flee America. His tax plan, in combination with his refusal to reform entitlements and to honestly address spending, would balloon the deficit and the national debt. So even as Donald Trump has offered very few specific economic plans, what little he has said is enough to know that he would be very bad for American workers and for American families.

See, the tariff comment is interesting because it could easily be true, and we could have a separate debate on economics to share our thoughts on that. But really, short of taking those steps how is it possible to expect products made in America to compete in the free market? Everyone whines about jobs going overseas, and how all our products come from China, but that’s the way it’s going to stay unless either American products become cheaper (how does lower wages sound?) or foreign products get more expensive. Take your pick.

If the free market is good for American workers and American families, then it’s time for candidates to start saying so, and saying that they are OK with buying foreign products and using foreign labor.

Oh, he’s worried about what our enemies will think. Right, so, if we just talk nicely about them, then they’ll want to be friends? This is what the politicians really just don’t get – the people are tired of leaders who mince words and make apologies for the terrorist nations of the world. Trump is only MORE appealing because he doesn’t play that game.

A person so untrustworthy and dishonest as Hillary Clinton must not become president. But a Trump nomination enables her victory.

Agreed about Hillary. But he underestimates the people. There is a critical mass already that would take Trump over ANY candidate. Add to that the people who will choose Trump just because of their fear of Hillary and we could be talking about a victory of Reagan-like proportions.

I’ll say this: Donald Trump is the worst form of Presidential candidate, except for all the other candidates.

    squeak: two sincere questions…

    a. Is Trump your preferred candidate, from those running, that you intend to vote for?

    b. What would you say the likelihood is of Trump prevailing over Clinton in the general election?

If you don’t wish to address ‘a’, at least ‘b’.

Sour grapes from Mitt. Romeny and Trump are both “new money” (their grandparents were poor, their parents got rich, and they built on that). Both are preppies and ivies. Yet Romney’s background weighed him down (his “47% problem), and Trump is able to flout it, be obnoxious, and be the “man of the people” and with a little script rewriting get elected. Mitt shouldn’t whine.

squeak: I disagree with your claim that if democracy wants to be xenophobic, it can be. I mean, it is true. But a core principle of American democracy is to “prevent the tyranny of the many over the few” in addition to the “tyranny of the few over the many”. That’s kinda the impetus behind the first Amendment. Our government system is meant to protect minorities from a xenophobic majority. Electing Trump would be a step towards a massive failure on that front.

Sam – very good point and I agree. It would violate a core principle. However, I do contend that if the majority feels physically threatened by the applicant immigrant group, and there is justification for that feeling (e.g. blending terrorists in with groups of refugees as an MO, allowing convicts to escape from the home country into the US as an MO), then it could very well justify setting aside that principle for a time.

mdd – keep in mind that if you invoke name calling as your politics then you lose that moral high ground over your opponent. Also, Trump is better than you are at name calling, so if you make the election about insults then you help him win.

DY -“If it’s Trump vs. Clinton I would probably hold my nose and vote Clinton.”

Do you know why Trump is popular amongst the public? He’s not PC, like the others! The reason why that some Frum Jews & others will vote DemonCrat is because they like the way the country is run now.

You can’t run a country with a Robinhood attitude. Not e/o has to be equal. Russia tried Communism & it was a colossal failure!

This country has been run for too long by people like the Clintons, who think that they are above the law. E/O knows the news about Hillary and the emails. But do a research about Bill when he was Governor.

Do you think that he’ll start a war with Mexico?!? We need their workers, but legally, not the way it’s now! And they also need us, because they have no money.

“Or to nuke some country because it annoyed him?”

What this country needs is someone like Trump, because when N.Korea nukes us, he’ll respond! Hillary will be under her covers!

squeak and health: Does Trump’s blatant disregard for the truth bother you? All politicians lie, but Trump doesn’t even pretend to be close to caring. He just says what comes to mind if he thinks it’s what’s best for him to say, regardless of what is actually true. At the debate last night, he denied saying things that he said in the previous debate. Just straight-out lied to the people about what he said. When we all saw it last time. To paraphrase, Trump’s opinion regarding the truth is, “Go away, I have a banana.”

Romney didn’t say anything that hasn’t been said before, and mostly all of it is spot-on. And after listening to the debate last night, in which Trump got caught in lies and reversed positions several times, I don’t know how any thinking person could vote for Trump. Let’s just daven he doesn’t get the nomination.

health: you sound like someone who has no clue about the truth, like your favored candidate, Mr. Drumpf. Why would Mister Drumpf be a lesser evil??? He is liar and cannot be trusted on anything, he is emphatically NOT a conservative and he is certainly not pro-Israel. Te latter alone would disqualify him in my eyes but there is so much else, like his many scams, his bankruptcies, his avid support of Democrats and other things I could not even repeat here that makes him the most ill-suited candidate for President EVER. Go and get some information. Read some conservative websites-National Review, red state and others-and see how apoplectic real conservatives are about Mr. Drumpf. Did Romney have any good points?

    Yes.

    All of them.

That so many Jews are supporting Trump shows that many of us have adopted gentile values. Did you not see him last Thursday? He is the most vulgar man ever to run for President as the candidate of a major party. His major business interests have included gambling casinos and beauty pageants? Would you allow your daughter to enter either? Or worse? He is the candidate of licentiousness and hedonism! In his business career, his ethical guidance is basically “can I get away with it”?

Trump encourages the worst bigotry among his supporters, has to think about whether David Duke deserves condemnation, but himself spouts anti-Semitic memes in front of Jews.

And he has said repeatedly that he would force Israel into a “peace” deal that would not be in its interests. All because he can.

“I said Trump is better than Hillary”

You have to be either an ignoramus or delusional to think that.

Any Democrat who has done what Trump has done be getting condemned across the Orthodox spectrum. And the condemnation would be deserved. That the criticism to date has been mild and that there are people right here in this comment field who actually support Trump shows that Jews can keep Shabat and Kashrut but have brains that function like gentile bigots. It is a Chilul HaShem.
