My daughter aged 3.25 just had stitches and my wife is nervous about the scars.
Does anyone know of a way to reduce or eliminate them???
February 23, 2016 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm #1138663☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMederma
February 23, 2016 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm #1138664YikesauParticipantSo for the last 30 minutes I have googling and it comes down to two options.
I would like to hear what has worked for others, Mederma (as DaasYochid has mentioned) or Kelo-Cote??
February 23, 2016 4:09 pm at 4:09 pm #1138665mythoughtsParticipantJust a note. You should use the scar gel such as Mederma as soon as the wound heals. A fresh scar responds better to treatment. Hatzlacha

If the stitches were done well, and by a competent doctor, that will be your best deterrent. According to the health professionals I have spoken to, the products are either placebos or snake oil.

One of my kids had surgery to take out a cyst. We used a top surgeon and he gave us Kelocote at his followup appointment, around one month after the surgery. For whatever reason, we never bothered with it. Six months later, his scar was still very puffy and red, and when we had it checked out, we were told that if it still looked like that at that point, chances are it was going to stay that way. We were given the option of leaving it that way, doing another surgery to deal with the scar, or steroid shots. As an afterthought, the doctor added that we can try Kelocote but that since 6 months had passed, it was unlikely to help.
We started using Kelocote religiously at that point, twice a day, just a tiny drop. The results were unbelievable. Within weeks, the scar was nearly gone. It’s now over a year since the surgery and you can barely see anything. There’s still a light pink line there but nothing anyone would notice if they weren’t looking for it. Kelocote definitely works. It’s very expensive but worth every cent.
Mod 29, I don’t know who you spoke to, but Kelocote comes highly recommended by top surgeons.
Thank you for that information. It’s never been mentioned to me but I will be happy to ask about it. One of my children just had surgery this month and I am due for a follow up
February 23, 2016 5:10 pm at 5:10 pm #1138668HealthParticipantFrom AAD.org:
Apply sunscreen to the wound after it has healed. Sun protection may help reduce red or brown discoloration and help the scar fade faster. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF or 30 or higher and reapply frequently.”
February 23, 2016 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm #1138669YW Moderator-29 👨💻ModeratorDitto on the sunscreen. We have been directed to keep fresh wounds away from sunlight to prevent discoloration.
February 23, 2016 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #1138670popa_bar_abbaParticipantLook, none of these things might work, but you’ll definitively do them because otherwise you’ll think they would have.
I put mederma on after I had stitches. I have a scar.
February 23, 2016 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #1138671new hereMemberKelocote has a version with sunscreen included. We didn’t get that kind at first, but when we finished the first tube and had to replace it, the pharmacist gave us the one with the sunscreen.

I’m pretty sure it’s a silicone gel. There are cheaper OTC versions, like “Scar Away”.
February 23, 2016 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #1138674unsureMemberI don’t know if it will work, but I got badly hurt on my face as a kid and I put on vitamin E oil and all my scars went completely away except one.
Good Luck!
February 24, 2016 1:09 am at 1:09 am #1138675lena1MemberWait until it heals first. If it is a raised (hypertrophic) scar, apply silicone tape or sheeting to it (this may be left on for months for best results) and if is a depressed one micro needling done with a needle 0.25 mm in width or thinner will help remove it. These are remedies that do work.
February 24, 2016 7:10 am at 7:10 am #1138676YikesauParticipantThanks Lena (It seems like you too opened an account just to help me)
Isn’t Kelo-Cote silicon based gel (unlike Mederma)?
February 24, 2016 1:40 pm at 1:40 pm #1138677new hereMemberYes, Kelocote is silicone based. I don’t know anything about cheaper silicone-based gels such as the one Health mentioned. If I had to do it again, I would use Kelocote again since I know that it works.
