A question for the men out there( I’m aware some women learn as well, but I feel it is sufficiently normative to address this to men)
What do you learn when you learn Torah? I’m aware there are many Shittos (and cute stories about learning Mussar) about how we should spend our learning time but I’m interested in peoples take on this.
I would have guessed that I spend half my time learning Gemoro (Rashi and Tosfos) and half on other things (mainly parsha and machshovo) but I’ve just added it all up and apparently I spend 2/3 of my time on the latter! Quite surprised actually.
Anyway, what about you?
I learn an hour Daf Yomi before shachris. After breakfast I learn the parsha in a sefer called Chok L’Yisroel. This has the parsha by each day. Then there are portions to learn from the haftorah, from Kesuvim, mishna, gemorah, zohar, rambam, mussar. That’s about an hour or so. Later I learn a chasidish sefer. And then again gemorah. Altogether about 4 hours a day.
Kol hakavod, theprof1. May I ask what Chasidish sefer?
I personally put emphasis on practical halachah and Gemorra. The effort I put into studying parsha could certainly use some work. I also learn a very small amount (~1 or 2 minutes) of Chasidus before bed.
If you don’t know what to learn, come up to the YU book-sale:- There simply won’t be any shortage of good ideas for what to procure and learn.
i learn 8 hours a day halacha and around 1 hour gemara and hour an hour mussar, around friday shabbos i do some chumash and anything else that i want. i do not learn chassidus
I’m maavir sedrah, and in addition to Rashi, learn Ramban or another mefaresh. I also started Daf Yomi with Gittin this time around, and try to learn Gemara and Rashi daily. I also learn Mishna Berura/Kitzur, and Hilchos Shabbos.

When I have time to learn, I generally work on Gemaras with Rashi and Tosfos.
a questioning jew- yes. all the way through. gemara rishonim achronim poskim until lamaaseh. maybe that is why i spend 8 hours on it?
thank you. if you don’t mind, i would like to add that in my humble opinion, each person on their level, should try to learn some time, without any distractions, family, phones, etc.. so he can be 100% there. it maybe not within everyone”s reach, but for they who can, it is really worth it.
the gemara in kidushin says that a person should spend a 1/3 of his time (machlokes rashi and tosfos if this means each day or each week should be split into 3) for mikra, a 1/3 mishna and a 1/3 halacha.
I thought it’s supposed to be 1/3 coffeeroom 1/3 news and 1/3 videos

i think you would do well to see the shulchan aruch in y.d. 246.4. where we see when the gemara that speaks about the thirds, apply and when not, and esspecially the rama that brings the opinion that the gemara includes all the categories, and see the shach also about the priorites in what to learn
Torah.
I learn halacha (esp. hilchos Shabbos, but also other areas of practical halacha). I also learn Tanya on a daily basis.
i personally do torah and madda. about 6,5 hours of torah a day and about 3 hours of madda a day
Really Madda is Torah because your learning about H'”kbh many creations and the complexity of His creations with that said. I learn 8 hours of torah a day and 7 hours of maada, which equals 15 hours of torah a day.

Thank for reminding me. I have an eng translation of the Alter Rebbe’s Torah Or, Noam Elemelech, and some discourses of the Rimanov Rebbe I read from time to time.
I’m trying to complete the Tanya for the first time. Almost done…
Oh! I am a big fan of the Shem MiShmuel – original chiddushei Torah. Cutting edge.
And I am delving into the Ben Ish Chai – halacha and derasha. His gematria style alone is brilliant.
Hope you don’t mind me saying, the Ben ish chai was a Sefardi Chacham from Iraq so his Torah probably wouldn’t be called chassidus.
