I’m looking to relocate in the Us. We’re a couple with one child. We need a community that is young and sociable, has kosher conveniences and is normal, healthy and open minded.
Schools are very important: there should be a school that provides a good well rounded education both kodesh and Chol. That the kids are happy in with great teachers.
It should have a nice Rav and be q nice suburban place but either in or near a big city for shopping etc.
Not too big (we Dont want to get lost) but not too small that its boring and limited.
Any ideas?
Please help! Thanks. Please give as much info as possible
January 18, 2016 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm #1132510JosephParticipantWhat country are you coming from? Do you have any preferences as far as hashkafa, i.e. yeshivish, modern, chasidish? Do you need to move somewhere that you need to find a position is a specific industry? Are you willing/able to pay a relatively high amount in tuition?
January 18, 2016 5:06 pm at 5:06 pm #1132511Ray2220MemberComing from the US. No hashkafic preferences besides normally frum and a nice mix.
Industry very easily relocatable. Willing to pay reasonable tuition but not very high
January 18, 2016 9:46 pm at 9:46 pm #1132512B1g B0yParticipantBen Salem, Pennsylvania is a small Jewish community just outside of Philly. Less than an hour from Lakewood but very suburban.

January 19, 2016 7:19 am at 7:19 am #1132521Mashiach AgentMemberhow about Passaic. it has a nice frum torah community & if looking for big shopping the people go to the next town over of Teaneck for fancier shopping. if you want more modern the nteaneck itself is more to the modern side versus passaic but is still also a nice frum community & both not far from manhattan
January 19, 2016 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #1132522gavra_at_workParticipantSt. Louis is actually affordable, not like Brooklyn, Far Rockaway or Monsey.
Cleveland (or Cincinnati) may also be OK, but “Industry very easily relocatable” has a way of not relocating to Cleveland, so do some research first.
January 19, 2016 2:37 pm at 2:37 pm #1132523Avi KParticipantGavra, did you know that the “sainted” Louis in question was the one who burned the Talmud in Paris?
January 19, 2016 2:40 pm at 2:40 pm #1132524JosephParticipantSt. Louis is well off in employment opportunities?
January 19, 2016 2:48 pm at 2:48 pm #1132525zahavasdadParticipantSt Louis doesnt have the Kedushah of Brooklyn Eir Hakodesh
There is likely more torah in Brooklyn than anywhere else in the world (Maybe even more than Jerusalem)
January 19, 2016 2:53 pm at 2:53 pm #1132526Shopping613 ðŸŒParticipantDon’t go to Cincinnati.
January 19, 2016 4:09 pm at 4:09 pm #1132527gavra_at_workParticipantGavra, did you know that the “sainted” Louis in question was the one who burned the Talmud in Paris?
Yes.
January 19, 2016 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm #1132528gavra_at_workParticipantDon’t go to Cincinnati.
Why not?
St. Louis is well off in employment opportunities?
As always, it depends on what you do. There probably isn’t a large market for typewriter repair people. Look into anywhere you move before making a decision.
January 19, 2016 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #1132529MDGParticipantRay2220,
Do have family in the East? If so, staying relatively near by may be helpful. Places like Cleveland and Detroit have reasonable housing, but the cities themselves are rather poor. Pittburgh is a little more expensive, but a lot less than NYC metro. Baltimore also, but Baltimore seems larger than what you’re looking for.
I think you need to look at your needs and wants and prioritize them. No place is going to have everything you want (unless you’re really lucky).
January 19, 2016 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #1132530sonMemberPerhaps in favor of keeping away from Lashon Hara – especially on a whole community – it would be worthwhile to avoid suggesting not to investigate certain areas.
January 19, 2016 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm #1132531zahavasdadParticipantFYI Its not Lashon Harah to tell people the truth about a community. People need to know the truth especially if they intended to spend thousands , tens of thousands or even Hundreds of thousands of Dollars on relocation.
January 19, 2016 6:30 pm at 6:30 pm #1132532MDGParticipantSomeone told me that the most affordable Jewish community is Milwaukee because the price of housing in cheap and they have school vouchers.
January 19, 2016 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #1132533☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantZD: In a public forum, it probably is.
Privately, on an as-needed basis, it wouldn’t be.

So does Cleveland.

January 20, 2016 4:10 pm at 4:10 pm #1132541streekgeekParticipantManalapan, 25 minutes from Lakewood. Small kollel, nice but small and active frum community. Bigger non-orthodox community as well.
Passaic is bigger, but also nice.
Eatontown/Oakhurst near Long Branch which has a big Sfardi/Syrian community.
I second Bensalem, PA. Nice people.
Rochester, NY
Waterbury, CT
Norfolk, VA
Ray2220, feel free to ask any questions. I’ve looked in to all the communities I mentioned as we’re looking to relocate too.
