I don’t think that there ARE any lyrics. I think it’s just instrumental: Dah dah dah DAH, dah dah dah-dah, dah dah dah-dah-dah, dah-dah dah dah-dah! Whether it was Wagner or Mendelsohn, it was till just an orchestral composition.

    Wasn’t it?

This tune was composed by Felix Mendelssohn, grandson of Moses Mendelssohn — “Moshe mi’Dessau,” who laid the foundation for the German Reform Movement. Felix’s father Abraham did not circumcise him, and had him baptized as a child (at about the age of 7). Felix married a minister’s daughter.

Moses Mendelssohn was a frum Jew.

It was Felix Mendelsohn, NOT Moses Mendelsohn who was a composer and he wrote the wedding march, not Here comes the bride, here comes the bride is by Richard Wagner the Anti-Semite. They are different and sound different

Avi is frummer than Moses, whose children all shmadded to Christianity?

Moses Mendelsohn wrote the “Biur” a commentary on Chumash. When a copy was handed to the Chasam Sofer, he immedietly threw it to the ground.

His kids didn’t turn out great. But that doesn’t say anything about his level of frumkeit.

Rabbi Shneyer Leiman has an article in Tradition disproving that story of the Chasam Sofer.

When someone is part of the haskala and all his children shmad, it goes hand in hand with each other and one is the fruit of the other.

But Mendelsohn was frum. By today’s standards, he would be (at the very least) MO. His most radical idea was that Jews should be accepted by the outside world, and that Jews should be fluent in German. Today, there is no Ghetto and we speak English. Which is pretty much what Mendelsohn advocated.

Are you trying to say that MO is on its way to becoming reform???

Thats jews speak the local language instead of a “Jewish Language” is not something Medelsohn had a monopoly on. If he hadnt said it, someone else would have.

You cant legislate what language people speak especially if you live in a place where you deal with lots of people.

Yet, look what came from him.

And look what came from Chizkiyahu.

It’s a shame that Mendelsohn’s descendants were not Jewish. But it doesn’t say anything about Mendelsohn himself.

As Zahavasdad pointed out, the orchestral piece of Here Comes the Bride was written by Wagner sr”y and not Mendelssohn. Until today, the Israel symphony orchestras (with rare and very controversial exceptions) refuse to play Wagner’s music. According to the historian Jacob Katz, Wagner had a tangible influence on the advance of Antisemitism in Eastern Europe in the 19th century, and was an important philosophical (sic) influence in the rise of Nazism. I am an avid classical music lover, and I will not listen to Wagner.

As far as Mendelssohn’s descendants are concerned, it would be wise for some of the above commenters to leave it alone. If the moderators would allow it (they won’t) , I can easily comprise a long list of gedolei hador from the last thousand plus years whose descendants left the Jewish and/or Torah world. This is a glass house, and the dwellers would be wise not to throw stones.

Moses Mendelsohn might not have “officially” been reform; it might not have even existed before him. Some have even claimed he was Shomer Shabbos. But, he paved the way for the ruination of most of European Jewry. It’s like someone who unlocks the door and turns off the alarm system. So, when the house is vandalized, whose fault is it? The guy who turned off the alarm? He didn’t break in or steal anything. Yes, but he made it possible for OTHERS to do so. Mendelsohn bears responsibility for the destruction wrought by his followers.

Zahavasdad: thanks for the clarification regarding Felix vis a vis Richard.

Matan1, old man, when I say, “what came from him”, I don’t primarily mean his descendants. Thank you, american_yerushalmi.

People who blame Mendelsohn for events happening in Europe at that time. The Haskallah was just a jewish version of the enlightenment and in general religion went on the decline in the western world starting in France and these trends just spread to the jewish community

Old man – it would be wise for you to take your anti torah accusations elsewhere. To let your comment stand is nauseating.

Let it be understood, that every last one of Mendelsohn’s children and disciples left the fold. I challenge you to name one who did not.

And while you might be able to name a few names of children/followers of gedolai torah who left the fold, no person with a shred of intellectual honesty could deign to compare that to the accomplishment of moses m.

Only your tremendous biases could allow you to make such a shameless statement. The house you live in is made of straw, my friend. Be wary of when the wind changes.

The mindset of folks like old man and zahavasdad is proof of why Modern Orthodoxy will not last another 50 years. The products of that system are bathed in dissonance and confusion – on the one hand we have the torah, but on the other hand modern society does not allow one to hold values such as “chosen people” or “daas torah”.

For a while they were able to hold together despite the dissonance by focusing and uniting on the fledgling state of israel to shut out the dichotomy raging within them. Now that israel is mature, and all but the most ridiculous factions support its survival equally, being an Israel supporter no longer is enough to justify being modern orthodox.

In the near future, all of MO will either become right wing, following RIETS – or leave the fold, following YCT/JTS.
