If we are supposed to act like Hashem, and a basic aspect of Judaism is sacrifice and giving of ourselves, how can this be when Hashem is never mesiras nefesh or sacrifices anything?

Ask yourself: Who are you being mesiras nefesh for?

while hashem himself and his essence is not moser nefesh, the way that he acts towards us is such that if the action were to be done by a human, it would be called mesiras nefesh. it’s the same deal with all middos of hashem. after all, hashem is not actually merciful, slow to anger, loving, kind, etc (see beginning of moreh nevuchim). he has no emotions, and therefore can’t really be moser nefesh or possess love/mercy/kindness the way we do. rather these middos are descriptors of hashem’s behavior and actions, that if they were carried out by humans, would be called as such.

zogt: But Hashem did feed the hungry, create life, cloth the naked, visit the sick, bury the dead- these are things Hashem actually did which we must emulate. Hashem was never mesiras nefesh though. The physical manifestation I suppose of mesiras nefesh would be to offer a korban. Perhaps “vehaaretz nasan leh’benei adam” is most similar to this.

newbee: I don’t get your question. Halachta Bidrachav doesn’t mean that we are obligated to create universes. It means we strive to emulate HKBH’s Middos. Not every Chiyuv in Mitzvos stems from this. So there’s a separate Mitzvah of Bechol Nafshecha that’s separate from Halachta Bidrachav.

@Sam2, ‘Not every chiyuv mitzvos stems from this’, the Shaarei Kedusha seems to think that mitvos bein odom le’makom form the tzelem and bein odom le’chaveiro are mashlim the tzelem.

Sam, it seems like you do get my question, but you just dont like it- in which case you dont need to say anything.

Anyway, because both mesiras nefesh and halachta bidrachav are such fundamental and basic principles. Its hard to understand how the most basic and fundamental aspect of mesiras nefesh is not something Hashem does.

The question rephrased is, ‘Is Hashem mevatel Hashem to Hashem?’. According to Rav Hutner He is.
