For all you computer people out there, where could I get a computer without internet?
July 30, 2015 4:52 pm at 4:52 pm #1094863Mashiach AgentMembergo to any computer store & buy it & then ask them to remove any internet access programs on the computer
July 30, 2015 6:10 pm at 6:10 pm #1094864akupermaParticipantNo need to remove anything. You have to do something to get internet access, even if you have a modem/wi-fi card installed. You have to connect to the internet, or you have no internet access.
You can still run programs, but for example, you won’t be able send documents unless you print them off. You can still find some software which can be loaded from CD or DVD, assuming you have one installed in the computer. YOu probably can get by fine with an older, used, computer and buying very inexpensive second hand software.
And if you aren’t connected to the internet, you won’t have to worry about computer security.

July 30, 2015 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #1094867SayIDidIt™Participant…even if you have a modem/wi-fi card installed. You have to connect to the internet, or you have no internet access.
That is not necessarily true. If the computer has a WiFi card installed it is fairly simple to connect to any open networks in the close vicinity.
However, most older computers do not come with WiFi cards. Laptops, notebooks and tablets do. So if you get a desktop computer make sure it does not have a WiFi card.
Please note: even if the computer does not have WiFi, anyone (spouse, children) can buy a USB Wireless WiFi Adapter for as little as $5 and can connect to open networks in your area.
The best bet is to install a program that will block any Internet access.

July 31, 2015 1:36 am at 1:36 am #1094869Happy Go Lucky!!ParticipantI’m aware of that, however, you wouldn’t get far on the web using such a chip.
July 31, 2015 4:14 am at 4:14 am #1094870pcozMemberYou could play a MUD or telnet into a bulletin board.
July 31, 2015 4:30 am at 4:30 am #1094871akupermaParticipantpcoz: MUDs and Telnet are all internet applications. As is voice mail and telephonic communications.
to several people: If you buy a computer and choose not to have a wi-fi card included, and you do not plug anything into the ethernet port, you can not access the internet. At some point someone (perhaps the vendor who sold you the computer) had to take explicit stepts to get internet access.
August 4, 2015 12:24 am at 12:24 am #1094872pcozMemberThe best way to prevent Internet access would be to prevent access to the host OS and lock down a sub-OS to not have networking capabilities.
August 5, 2015 12:46 am at 12:46 am #1094873Abba_SParticipantWho is the computer for? If it’s for you get any desktop computer with at least 200 gig hard drive.as long as you don’t have a wifi card your ok. The Problem is if you have a kid he can slip in a wifi adapter which cost a few bucks, into a usb port and you would never be any the wiser.
You should also delete internet explorer from the hard drive. You are going to have download programs. Otherwise it will just be a paperweight You are going to have to use XP or prior as your operating system.

August 6, 2015 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #1094877DikDukDuckParticipantI know some laptops (mine) have an external wifi switch which can enable/disable the wifi card depending on the switch’s position.
August 6, 2015 8:07 pm at 8:07 pm #1094878👑RebYidd23ParticipantYou don’t have to worry about him buying a wifi adapter till he’s seven.
August 6, 2015 8:22 pm at 8:22 pm #1094879gavra_at_workParticipantAs they make USB WIFI adapters, so you would have to get rid of the USB ports as well. It certainly is feasible.
Why does your 5 year old need a computer? Perhaps you could get a similar result from a gaming console or word processing device.
