a friend of mine asked me this question last year

“why is the avodah of tisha b’av aveilus, we should be working on bein adam l’chaveiro to rectify the reason the beis hamikdash was destroyed”

    i didn’t have an answer

    do you?

I don’t have the question, and it is a weird one to my ears.

The “avoda” of Tisha b’Av is to be Mis’abel on Yerushalayim and the Beis Hamikdash, and depending on who you are, the Shechina. Is that so terrible?

Now, being nice to people doesn’t have a date. That is supposed to be ask the time. In fact, real Ahavas Chinam would be Davka not to attach it to a certain date. It means without trying to gain off it.

Just a note, although we obviously must learn the lesson of the Churban and avoid Sinas Chinam, that is not the pillar on which the third Bayis is built. Just like the second Bayis wasn’t based on Shalosh Chamuros, although they obviously had to do Teshuva on them.

Angie, there is a time for everything. Is it really that bad that we have one day a year to internalize and focus on the loss and to set our goals to what we are yearning?

While it might be a very nice thing to setup safety standards after an accident ?”?, is that meant to replace Shiva?

i’m not saying thats terrible, i’m saying why is that the avodah as opposed to trying to rectify the reason for the beis hamikdash being destroyed?

so at the least have an add on to shiva, one of the avodas hayom should be to do chessed and have ahavas chinam

ca: Is the “avodah” of Aveilus after a relative dies to bring him back from the dead? Sometimes being sad itself is what Hashem wants from us. Fix the problems all year round. Be sad on Tishah B’av.

    another question i had (yesterday)

why don’t we say tachnuun on tisha b’av?

answer: because it’s called a moed

question: if so we shouldn’t have said it yesterday why don’t we say it on the tenth of av (this year) yimos hamoshiach it won’t be a moed

i have my own answer which no one has said before that we’re aveilim and in a beis aveil there isw no tachnun

if so why isn’t that the reason

To answer the first question, if we are using the churban to motivate us to do teshuvah, we need to be mis’abel on what we lost so that we desperately want it back, and will do what we need to in order to get it back. This is not to disagree with what others have said that aveilus is itself the avodah, but to point out that they work together.

To answer the second question (which I had thought of yesterday as well when we said Av Harachamim), the status and dinim of moed are nidcheh to today as well.

What kind of an avodah can there be for bein adam lachaveiro?

When we think about yamim tovim, we think about specific actions that we do in order to celebrate or mourn or repent. They tend to have specific rules and strictures and tend to be regulated. They have their own liturgy.THey are about specific action, not about a “feel-good” attitude.

On Tisha Be’Av we have the chamisha inuyim and Megillas Eicha. On Sukkos we have the sukkah, arba minim, leining, etc. On Purim we have the mitzvos of the day, one of which is the closest I can think of to an avodah on a yom tov that is based on bein adam lachaveiro, mishloach manos.

What would the avodah for the day be, going around to x number of people like at Kiddush Levana and saying shalom aleichem with no prejudice in our hearts? Having an asifa in Citifield? Doing a chessed? Those aren’t specific avodahs- two of those are things that we should be doing anyway (veahavta lareiacha kamocha) and one of those was simply a good thing to do.

I do know that there is (obviously) a lot of buzz about ahavas chinam around this time of year, and I think that that’s the best kind of avodah you can have in bein adam lachaveiro for Tisha Be’av, as long as people follow through.

In the meantime though, the point really is the mourning for the loss.

(A tangential point- considering that the first beis hamikdash was destroyed because of the transgressions of the 3 mitzvos yehareig ve’al yaavor, maybe the avodah of the day should be that every person should focus on not killing his neighbor, or on not being Hindu for the day.)

    dy,

so you’re saying yimos hamoshiach the yom tov of tisha b’av will be a nidche?

The reason I heard for omiting tachanun (I think i read it in R” Soloveitchik’s work) is that Tisha b’av isnt a time for davening. As several pesukim say Hashem didnt accept tefilos eg eicha 3:44 ???????? ??????? ???? ???????? ?????????. This is why we omit tiskabel as well.

Tisha ba’v is a time for mourning (of course we daven shemonie esrei like we are mechuyev to)

CA, no. I’m saying that in a year like this, not only is the fast nidche, so is the status of moed and the din regarding Tachanun/Av Harachamim nidche.

    dy,

so you’re saying the fast is a moed irrespective to what tisha bav will be yimos hamoshiach?

The avodah of Tisha be’Av is to aspire to be greater than the dor in which the beis ha’mikdosh was destroyed.

It’ll be a seven day Yom Tov like most Yamim Tovim. Starts on the 9th and ends on Tu b’Av.

No source, whatsoever. But it’s obviously obvious.
