Does it still apply considering the Supreme Court’s recent blunder.

July 5, 2015 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm #1090662theprof1ParticipantIf the poskim of centuries ago could institute a special Mi Shebeyrach before mussaf on Shabbos for the well-being of the king and the country, I think we definitely should show hakoras hatov for the Billions of dollars that the US government grants yeshivos. Although there certainly exists anti semitism in this country, its not anywhere like the last 2000 years of European persecutions and killing. This was done with the explicit okays from the governments.
July 6, 2015 12:31 am at 12:31 am #1090663lesschumrasParticipantCan someone clearly explain, in English, the gist of this thread? Thanks
July 6, 2015 2:12 am at 2:12 am #1090664Jewish ThinkerParticipantI am saying that Rav Moshe says we should be ?????? ??? ????? ??????. He praises the Medina of America and calls it a “????? ?? ???” who helps all its residents with programs, including helping Yeshivas.
And I think we should be grateful that the Founding Fathers made a constitution and Bill or Rights that gave religious liberty to all.
July 6, 2015 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm #1090665Avi KParticipantAll these programs only help bureaucrats. They come with some very serious strings.
July 6, 2015 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #1090666charliehallParticipant“Does it still apply considering the Supreme Court’s recent blunder.”
Given that Jews participated enthusiastically in a huge celebration in the then-capital of Philadelphia on July 4, 1788 in honor of the ratification of the Constitution that provided that an idolater could become President of the United States, I would think so.
July 6, 2015 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #1090667charliehallParticipant“All these programs only help bureaucrats.”
I don’t see us turning down the money. And in fact our lobbyists were out in full force in Albany for the past few months trying to soak taxpayers for every dime we could.
July 6, 2015 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #1090668cherrybimParticipantIf the United States government did not have all these equal protection rules, they would have come after us long ago.
July 6, 2015 8:52 pm at 8:52 pm #1090669lesschumrasParticipantSurprisingly, the Torah played an important role in the path that the Revolution ultimately took.
In. 1775, the Americans argument was with Parliament, not King George. They were perfectly happy to keep him as their sovereign, as long as they had their own Parliament. One year later, they pulled down George’s statue in lower Manhattan and melted them down for ammunition.
What happened? Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet, Common Sense, that incited the Americans to reject the right of any man to rule as King over others. I had never actually read it until last May, when I discovered that Paine had largely based his polemic on Gideons refusal to be King and Shmuel’s complaint to Hashem regarding Bnei Yisraels request for a king.
July 7, 2015 5:00 am at 5:00 am #1090670Avi KParticipantCharlie, wait until the LGBT “equal-rights” demands start coming. Can you see such a club in a yeshiva or seminary?
July 7, 2015 1:23 pm at 1:23 pm #1090671JosephParticipantAvi: YU’s medical and legal schools already for years have YU-funded lgbt clubs.
July 7, 2015 3:03 pm at 3:03 pm #1090672zahavasdadParticipantYU does not fund LGBT clubs, they are there on their own.
YU is legally non-sectarian so they can get money from the state. They are not allowed to discriminate. So a Non-jew can apply to YU and they would be forced to take them. Yeshivas do not take the same money as YU does so they are not required to follow the same laws
July 7, 2015 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #1090675simcha613ParticipantI highly doubt medical schools and law schools are considered yeshivos and seminaries.
July 7, 2015 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm #1090677Avi KParticipantZahavasdad, Catholic Charities in IL stopped arranging adoptions because of an “anti-discrimination” law that applied because they took state money.
