Happy Father’s Day 2015
June 21, 2015 3:16 pm at 3:16 pm #1088064JosephParticipantJews have Father’s Day 354 days a year, none more or less relevant than any other day. The other nations need a special father’s day since the other days they can curse him to their heart’s content.
June 21, 2015 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm #1088065β DaasYochid βParticipantThanks. Are you taking me out to dinner?
June 21, 2015 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm #1088066HarotzehbilumshmoParticipantHappy fathers day #171 for 2015!(and mothers day for that matter too)
June 21, 2015 3:57 pm at 3:57 pm #1088067JosephParticipantDinner is on me, DY.
Any day.

Which Restaurant & what time should I meet you for dinner sponsored by you every day
June 21, 2015 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #1088069Jewish ThinkerParticipantThe other nations need a special father’s day since the other days they can curse him to their heart’s content.
Many non-jews respect their parents. Bashing is not needed.
June 21, 2015 4:52 pm at 4:52 pm #1088070πRebYidd23ParticipantFather’s day is not supposed to be the only day a person honors his or her father. It is supposed to be a special day on which we take a little extra time to celebrate fathers. Just like the oceans don’t disappear when World Oceans Day is over.
June 21, 2015 5:49 pm at 5:49 pm #1088071IvduEsHashemBsimchaParticipantI agree with RebYidd. We still have tisha b’av once a year even though we’re supposed to mourn over the destruction of the beis hamikdash all the time.
June 21, 2015 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #1088072akupermaParticipantThe “holiday” has a clearly secular origin (unlike Thanksgiving). Not problematic from a halachic perspective.
June 21, 2015 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #1088073atypical teenParticipantJewish thinker,
Agreed. It is troublesome that the first thought some people have after reading the words “Fathers Day” is so negative.
June 21, 2015 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #1088074chush biroishoyMemberThese klers make absolutely no sense. It’s not about just this day and not any other this day just gives you an opportunity to pause and reflect and give hakaras hatov for everything a parent does for you
June 21, 2015 6:35 pm at 6:35 pm #1088075chush biroishoyMemberJust because you celebrate your birthday doesn’t mean you stop existing every other day of the year
June 21, 2015 6:56 pm at 6:56 pm #1088077JosephParticipantFather’s Day is an offshoot of Mother’s Day. And the “Father of Mother’s Day” in America is Klu Klux Klansman J. Thomas Heflin of Alabama.
June 21, 2015 10:15 pm at 10:15 pm #1088078WolfishMusingsParticipantFather’s Day is an offshoot of Mother’s Day. And the “Father of Mother’s Day” in America is Klu Klux Klansman J. Thomas Heflin of Alabama.
1. Mother’s Day was founded by Anna Jarvis in 1912. Not a Klansmemeber.
2. Even if they were a Klansman, so what? An idea should stand or fall on the merit of the idea, not the person who proposed it.

June 22, 2015 12:20 am at 12:20 am #1088079β DaasYochid βParticipantWolf, Heflin didn’t invent it, but he was instrumental in getting it to become a national holiday.
All I can say about mothers’ and fathers’ days, is that if it were a chassidish’e minhag, we’d have a bunch of people claiming it’s chukas akum.
June 22, 2015 2:18 am at 2:18 am #1088080ubiquitinParticipantDY
I dont know about chukas akum. But wihtout question if in a century from now there is a chasidish minhag to celebrate a specidfic day in summer to celebrate fathers, yes It should be obvious that it was copied from goyim.
That said Joseph is silly for the many reasons:
1) “Jews have Father’s Day 354 days a year,” So you agree we should all wish our fathers happy fathwrs day today, you just maintain we should do it tommorow too.
2) Halevai one day a year we have proper kibud av
3) Every day is a time for teshuva, I hope your Rav doesnt discuss teshuva in Elul, every day is time to appreciate Torah, I hope your Rav doesnt discuss these themes on Shavuos. Hodaah on Chanukah, yetzias mitzrayim on PEsach etc etc.
4) These discussions are absolutly silly becasue the bottom line is this: If a father apreciates father’s day then there is no question that there is a mitzva deoraisa to wish him happy father’s day, if he doesnt care there is no reason too. Thus your opinion is only relevant to your children. So spare us.
June 22, 2015 2:55 am at 2:55 am #1088081147ParticipantMuslims could not take their father out to dinner until after it got dark, due to Ramadan.
June 22, 2015 3:40 am at 3:40 am #1088082WolfishMusingsParticipantWolf, Heflin didn’t invent it, but he was instrumental in getting it to become a national holiday.
And, if true, so what? Mother’s Day (or any other idea) should stand or fall on its own merits, not based on the identity of someone who may or may not be associated with it.
What next? Ban painters because Hitler tried to be a painter?
The Wolf
June 22, 2015 3:42 am at 3:42 am #1088083oomisParticipantThese “holidays” were invented in order to enrich the Card Companies, in my humble opinion. And guess what? I DON’T MIND A BIT, even if that IS the case! I only wish my parents were still with me, so I could treat them especially lovingly on these respctive two days. As much kovod as we show our parents, it can never be enough, and I for one, am happy to have had that additional opportunity to make the days extra-special for them.
June 22, 2015 3:45 am at 3:45 am #1088084JosephParticipant“Halevai one day a year we have proper kibud av”
You must also say “Halevai one day a year we have proper shomer shabbos” and “Halevai one day a year we properly believe in Hashem”.
June 22, 2015 4:05 am at 4:05 am #1088085Sam2ParticipantDY: False. I would not call this Chukas Akum if it was a Chassidish thing.
June 22, 2015 4:06 am at 4:06 am #1088086ubiquitinParticipantJoseph
I do!
I dont follow dont you agree that “Halevai one day a year we have proper shomer shabbos” and “Halevai one day a year we properly believe in Hashem”?
Of course we SHOULD do all these things every day, but halevai one day
June 22, 2015 4:25 am at 4:25 am #1088087β DaasYochid βParticipantFirst of all, Wolf, I was speaking factually. Tegardless, if the origin doesn’t bother you, fine, but I can see how someone would find it distasteful to celebrate a day popularized by a violent white supremacist. Many people find it distasteful to drive a Volkswagen, although on the car’s merits alone, it might be a good, reliable, economic vehicle.
Oomis, actually, from what I read, Anna Jarvis was quite dismayed that her invention was commercialized and actually tried to cancel it.
June 22, 2015 12:28 pm at 12:28 pm #1088088WolfishMusingsParticipantFirst of all, Wolf, I was speaking factually.
No, you were trying to create guilt by association.

Not comparable. You may not want to enrich VW by buying their products. On the other hand, the Klansman doesn’t profit at all by anyone observing Mother’s Day.

June 22, 2015 12:46 pm at 12:46 pm #1088089β DaasYochid βParticipantNo, you were trying to create guilt by association.
No, I wasn’t. I personally have no issue with someone sending a card or flowers, or making a visit or phone call with good wishes, to a parent who finds it meaningful.
the Klansman doesn’t profit at all by anyone observing Mother’s Day.
Neither do the Nazis if I buy a Volkswagen. At this point in history, it’s an emotional issue.
June 22, 2015 1:10 pm at 1:10 pm #1088090TheGoqParticipantDas hangup.
June 22, 2015 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #1088091oomisParticipantNot buying German items IS an emotional issue. But then, I do not get why we buy ANY products that are non-Jewish. There is not a country in the world that has not tried to expel or even kill Jews en masse. Jews should not use products made by ANY of these countries, based on that line of reasoning alone. And no, I have not yet been able to bring myself to buy German made products (though supposedly they are the best), but then maybe we should not buy French perfume or couture, either. Or shop in the Arab Shuk. Or drink English tea. Or travel (thereby enriching their tourist trade)to Italy or any other country that sanctioned the murder of Jews.
The Germans were not the first, nor unfortunately will they be the last, to try to decimate the Jewish People. This is an emotionally difficult and painful issue, but we nonetheless tend to side with the “don’t buy German” aspect of it.
June 22, 2015 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #1088092Jewish ThinkerParticipantDaasYochid-That is a bad comparison. The fact is that people associate a Volkswagen with the German Nazis.
Most don’t associate Mother’s Day with the Klu Klux Klan.
(Also, Father’s Day was not started by a KKK member)
June 22, 2015 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #1088093β DaasYochid βParticipantI wasn’t trying to say that they’re the same.
June 22, 2015 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #1088094lesschumrasParticipantOomis, as a side note, Italy is one of the few, if not only, European country that I’ve gone to precisely because Italian Jews had a very high survival rate. The Italians viewed Jews as fellow Italians who happened to be Jewish and went out of their way to protect them. Don’t confuse Italy with the Vatican. Local parishes hid many adult Jews after Italy surrendered and Germany took over.
