I am going to Eretz Yisrael soon and want to unlock my phone in order to use it there with an Israeli sim card. The trouble is my phone is still in contract with AT&T and they won’t unlock it for me. Does anyone know where I can get it unlocked for free or a reasonable price? Shkoyach in advance!
June 16, 2015 3:33 am at 3:33 am #1088101☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI would suggest first calling a few more times until you get a customer service agent who will do it for you.
June 16, 2015 3:35 am at 3:35 am #1088102Stam A Yid 613ParticipantThanks for the response. I’ve been trying that for a while now but they seem to have gotten stricter about it that they used to be. Any other suggestions?
June 16, 2015 3:36 am at 3:36 am #1088103JosephParticipantYou can Google (i.e. Google: unlock at&t iPhone 6s) to find unlock instructions for many phone models.
June 16, 2015 3:46 am at 3:46 am #1088104Stam A Yid 613ParticipantI’ve tried that too. I saw some online services, but I’m not sure how trustworthy they are and I don’t want to pay and then have it not work.
June 16, 2015 11:16 am at 11:16 am #1088105lesschumrasParticipantJust curious rious, doors ATT say they won’t because your contract doesn’t permit it?
June 16, 2015 11:40 am at 11:40 am #1088106nishtdayngesheftParticipantHave you called one of the services? I went Eretz Yisroel for vacation and I was able to just swap in a different SIM card for my Israel trip. And changed it back when I returned. My phone is on Verizon.
June 16, 2015 12:27 pm at 12:27 pm #1088107☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNDG, you must have an unlocked world phone which works on multiple bands. Verizon is CDMA, and as far as I know, the voice service doesn’t work through the SIM in CDMA, only GSM works that way.
June 16, 2015 12:53 pm at 12:53 pm #1088108BoysWorkParticipantIt can be done. I too have an AT&T phone in contract (galaxy). I found a service on ebay, and it worked perfectly. As for israel, I highly recommend
Golan sim cards. You get unlimited text and calls, and its very cheap.
June 16, 2015 1:08 pm at 1:08 pm #1088109nishtdayngesheftParticipantI have an iPhone. The iPhones have a SIM card in a slot on the side. I was told that all iPhones are unlocked. At least on Verizon.
More than one travel cell type service told me that and instead of renting a separate phone for my trip, I just rented a SIM card.
Worked very well. Even got an US number as well. I forwarded my regular US number to that number and people from the U.S. We’re able to just dip my regular number to reach me.

June 16, 2015 2:37 pm at 2:37 pm #1088111nishtdayngesheftParticipantSyag,
Not sure what you mean. However, on this thread it makes a difference.
Perhaps in this case, ???? ?? ??? , is appropriate.
June 16, 2015 2:48 pm at 2:48 pm #1088112☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIphones can be filtered in a safer way than other smartphones.
June 16, 2015 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm #1088113🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantTell this to your AT&T representative.
June 16, 2015 3:59 pm at 3:59 pm #1088114🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantthere are excuses for anything our yetzer hora asks us to do. Not that I have decided whether or not that applies here, but that is a pretty lame response for something the rabbanim have spoken so strongly against.
June 16, 2015 4:28 pm at 4:28 pm #1088115MefareshParticipantUnlocking is allowed currently, all you need to do is call your provider and provide proof of purchase, and they will unlock it for you for free.
June 18, 2015 12:36 am at 12:36 am #1088116Stam A Yid 613ParticipantThanks for all the responses. I’ve tried telling them all these things but they still won’t do it. I’m really not sure why. As for Verizon, they unlock all of their phones without you needing to ask them. They give it to unlocked. Not sure why AT&T doesn’t do that. Also, for those of you talking about the fact that you shouldn’t have an iPhone or any other smartphone, please take your views to a thread about that topic. As per most things in this world, there are good and productive ways of using them and well as bad and unproductive ways. Maybe instead of telling people they shouldn’t have one, be Dan L’Kaf Zechus and assume that those of us who have smartphones are using them in good and productive way.
June 18, 2015 1:44 am at 1:44 am #1088117🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantIf i see you holding an iphone, i can assure you 100% that i will judge you favorably, if at all (which I would probably not). But to come out and say that some people have good and productive reasons for using something that the rabbaim have straight up said not to own is not the way our religion works. Sorry if you take insult. It seems to have somehow become almost acceptable in my town to get memberships to the new mixed gym. am i obligated to pretend that that is okay as well because i have to assume that they are using it productively and i need to be dan l’kaf z’chus? On an individual basis – absolutely! But to not speak against it when people nonchalantly open threads as if it is a rule we have all chosen to forgo? that live and let live policy has been very destructive for our religion. Sure, i can go open a new thread about it but people who are doing things that aren’t advised are usually not the ones who read those threads. and people who have made excuses for themselves will actually feel free to come out and defend themselves even against the advice of those greater than them, instead of thinking it thru. Oh well.
Have a safe trip.
June 19, 2015 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #1088118☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThat’s a bit simplistic. I don’t think it can generally be said that “the rabbaim have straight up said not to own” a filtered (or certainly a “schechted”) smartphone when it’s required for work.
For those who don’t know what a “schechted” phone is, it’s a smartphone (Android, AFAIK) which has had the browsers and app stores removed so that the only use of the internet is for email, banking, and GPS apps and the like.
