Does anyone use a VoIP provider for their primary home telephone service? If so, which one have you used and what has been your experience – and what are your recommendations. Has VoIP entirely replaced your landline? Do you use VoIP over wireless?

Some of the more popular services are Vonage, Skype, Ooma, MagicJack, Google Voice and CallCentric.

Does anyone only use cellphones and has no landline (or voip) at all?

    Those aren’t all VoIP providers.

They all are. Which did you think was not?

We have used Vonage for 5 years for both home and office. We have no complaints and it saves us lots of money each month. They included features at no charge that AT&T was charging us for (voice mail, directory assistance, three way calling).

My wife’s favorite feature from Vonage: if dialing a number in your same area code you only dial SEVEN digits.

Oldest daughter works on a private ship in Europe. She uses MagicJack. It drops about half the calls, but as there are no cell towers at sea, the alternative is a Satellite phone and the cost is prohibitive.

Google Voice and Skype can be used to make voice calls, but they’re not router based providers, so not VoIP in the normal way the term is used, AFAIK.

I like Google Voice for its forwarding and messaging features, but use Ooma as a second line.

You’re referring to a landline replacement. VoIP is a broader term than router based providers. GV and Skype are VoIP. There are two type of telecom technologies, circuit based and VoIP based.

Did you get Ooma before they started charging monthly regulatory fees?

Technically correct, as I stated. Your original question was about landline replacement, though.

I think I was paying fees right away.

You can look into the Obi devices – Obi100 and better. They can connect to Google Voice as well as other VoIP providers.

I use nettalk. You buy the device for about $30(you can usually get a rebate). They charge an annual fee the cheapest being 40 dollars for USA calls only. Got to nettalk.com for more info.

OOMA, costs me $3.79/mo. Check out AMAZON for ratings, have been using them for years without problems.
