It is a mitzva to wear tzitzis in the day, but since we don’t have to during the night we take them off. But if someone doesn’t take them off and continues wearing them all night, is it a sin?
Also for those who see it as a mitzva to eat kitnios on Pesach, is it a sin to not eat kitnios?
And there is a mitzva to eat meat on Shabbos, is it a sin to not eat it?
~~~
Conversely, it is sin to eat nonkosher food, is it a mitzva to not eat nonkosher food? (yes, because it is a mitzva to not sin)
It is a sin to speak Loshon Hora, is it a mitzva to not speak Loshon Hora? (ibid)
~~~
Is everything absolute or is there something neutral in between mitzvos and aveiros? Or is it absolutely a sin to not do a mitzva, like it is a mitzva to not sin?

such people exist?
sitting around and doing nothing, is bittul torah. you should be learning.
April 14, 2015 11:34 pm at 11:34 pm #1072914HaLeiViParticipantIt’s a sin to pass up a Mitzvah that came your way.
April 14, 2015 11:38 pm at 11:38 pm #1072915☕️coffee addictParticipantwhy is he taking it off (in regards to tzitzis) is it because he doesnt like to be associated yiddishkeit? then yes it is
conversely,
why is someone not doing the aveirah, is it because he won over his yetzer hara? then yyes it is a mitzvah
April 15, 2015 12:28 am at 12:28 am #1072916ShuychusMemberClarity is clearly needed. Its not that everything is a mitzvah or an Aveira. Rav Dessler brings down that in all choices in life let it be which Yeshiva to go to, which pizza shop to buy from or even which jumper to wear all such choices one of your possibilities is the rotzon hashem the other is not. Of coarse you will end up driving yourself nuts if you looked at all decisions as such (but that aswell isn’t the rotzon hashem).
April 15, 2015 12:55 am at 12:55 am #1072917doleofyouParticipantI certainly hope that Rabbi Dessler never said such a thing, and until I see it inside I will believe it not.
There is no such thing as “Right” and “Wrong” when it comes to Vanilla/Chocolate ice cream. If you have a choice, you can choose whichever and get equal Gan Eden. There is no Rotzon Hashem in a Green/Red jumper.
I highly, highly doubt that Reb Dessler said such a thing.
April 15, 2015 1:35 am at 1:35 am #1072918👑RebYidd23ParticipantWhile some choices are equally good/bad, the chocolate ice cream and the green jumper are the right choice.

April 15, 2015 7:15 pm at 7:15 pm #1072920apushatayidParticipantFor a yeshiva bachur, a jumper of any color is a bad decision.
April 16, 2015 6:56 am at 6:56 am #1072921HaLeiViParticipantSure you can bring in Yiras Shamayim into that choice. Do you want to curtail your Tayva now just a bit as a tiny step in the way of Avoda, or perhaps should you take what you enjoy most so that you have one satisfaction that you feel unhindered. Perhaps take what is sweeter because ????? ?????? ??????? ?? ????? ????? ????, or maybe one is healthier.

i know CA already pointed this out, but i just learned this gemara over shabbos and had to share it
i also found it fascinating that rashi sys “there is no mitzva greater than this (resisting the YH)”
amazing! to resist the YH is greater than any mitzva!
April 19, 2015 4:05 am at 4:05 am #1072923☕️coffee addictParticipantwow,
bbbaruch shekivanti (ive learned kiddushin and even remember that gemara but i wasnt thinking about that when i posted)
April 19, 2015 1:50 pm at 1:50 pm #1072924catch yourselfParticipantIt should be noted that in some English speaking countries, a “jumper” is a sweater (the type of which it is certainly appropriate for Yeshiva bochurim to wear).
April 19, 2015 5:05 pm at 5:05 pm #1072925👑RebYidd23ParticipantA jumper may be appropriate, but if it is of any color it’s a problem. It must be black or gray.
April 19, 2015 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #1072926yentachayaParticipantYes, a person gets a mitzvah for all the moments when they do not speak loshon horah!

YC: it should be noted that seemingly according to the gemara above, your post only applies if said person has an urge to say LH.
i understand, given your name, that you probably did not read that gemara, so i will try to provide an explanation.
the gemara brings down a brissa (a tannaic saying, from the same time as the mishna) that says that if one “sits and doesn’t do an averia, we give him scar as if he did a mitzva”. the gemara then clarifies that the brissa only applies where “an averia came to his hand, and he was saved from it”
rashi: this “sitting and not doing an averia, we give him scar as if he did a mitzva” that we said, is when (an averia) came to his hand, and he denied his YH, and he didnt do the averia. there is no mitzva greater than this.
