Do you mind elaborating?
March 20, 2015 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm #1148775☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMerely crude language may not be assur, but nivul peh, where a certain subject is discussed gratuitously, is assur.
March 20, 2015 6:30 pm at 6:30 pm #1148776Jewish ThinkerParticipantSaying curse words is assur. <There is more to the sugya than that so don’t just rely on what I said>
But as you said, I don’t think that there is any formal prohibition on hearing or reading curse words.
Inappropriate subjects are also assur to talk about, I believe, but I don’t know if there is a 100% formal prohibition to listen to such things. Can you cite me a source, besides Shulchan Aruch 307:16?
March 20, 2015 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #1148777Letakein GirlParticipantDY, does that hold true for both males and females?

Do you eat fish?
March 22, 2015 1:36 am at 1:36 am #1148782Letakein GirlParticipantJT,
I thought there might be a difference because when males discuss a certain topic, there can be physical consequences that are actual aveiros, whereas females won’t have that reaction.
March 22, 2015 1:41 am at 1:41 am #1148783☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLG, it’s true that one of the issurim involved only applies to men, but it’s still prohibited for women.
JT, it’s not so difficult to type a few letters in Hebrew. BTW, it’s also mentioned in ??”? ?”?.

March 22, 2015 3:35 am at 3:35 am #1148787shulchanhashalemMemberSee Rambam on Avos Perek 1 mishna 16 ??”?, ????? ???? ??? ????? ??? ???? ???????? ????, ???? ???? ??? ????? ???????? ??????? ???????? ???? ?????? ????? ????? ?? ???? ??? ????? ?? ????? ??? ????? ???.
Also see the Sefer Nidchey Yisrael by the Chofetz Chaim chapter 20 towards the end where he calls it a ???? and a ??? and if you use ???? ?? any ???? ????? you speak later (including ?????? ????? ?????) will all go to destruction.
March 22, 2015 3:41 am at 3:41 am #1148788Letakein GirlParticipantThanks, DY.
March 22, 2015 5:13 am at 5:13 am #1148789☢️ Rand0m3x 🎲ParticipantHas anyone yet clearly explained the difference between nivel peh and curse words?
I can try: Nivul peh is described in Chapter 11 of Mesilas Yeshorim.
Anything else is, I assume, not nivul peh. Another concept that may prove useful is lashon n’kiyah. Can someone provide the location of the story of the Kohen who described the size of his portion of lechem haponim as
“the tail of a sheretz ?”
March 22, 2015 10:44 am at 10:44 am #1148790apushatayidParticipantIt is hard to know what op is asking, but ut dhould be obvious tgat onw can discuss a prohibited topic using refined speech, and can completely foul an innocent statement by cussing like a sailor
March 22, 2015 11:26 am at 11:26 am #1148791Letakein GirlParticipantAnd thanks JT! Your reply wasn’t posted yet when I thanked DY.
March 22, 2015 1:23 pm at 1:23 pm #1148792blubluhParticipantHow does a word get classified as proper or improper (foul) speech in the first place?
Often, terms that refer to parts of the body or bodily functions that people are uncomfortable discussing in public are classified as improper except in very limited situations and audiences (like doctors, etc).
Insults, however, can be composed of even the most acceptable words.
Technically speaking, “curse” words only describe those expressions designed to put a “hex” on another person and have nothing to do with foul language.
March 22, 2015 3:23 pm at 3:23 pm #1148793JosephParticipantYou have a. nivel peh, b. curses, c. foul language and d. crude language. Some are assur and some are muttar. Yet no one has clearly outlined which is assur and which isn’t or even explained the definition of each and the differences between them.
March 22, 2015 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #1148794Jewish ThinkerParticipantJT, it’s not so difficult to type a few letters in Hebrew.
You have a hebrew keyboard?

March 22, 2015 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #1148797Jewish ThinkerParticipantMost keyboards can be used for Hebrew.
I know that, but not everybody has the Hebrew stickers so you don’t know which English letter corresponds to Hebrew.
March 22, 2015 7:25 pm at 7:25 pm #1148798👑RebYidd23ParticipantDon’t you have an on-screen keyboard?
March 22, 2015 8:26 pm at 8:26 pm #1148799Jewish ThinkerParticipantI’m not a big fan of them.

March 27, 2015 3:46 am at 3:46 am #1148807Patur Aval AssurParticipantIf you want to bring ??? ????? into this, I might sooner say that appropriate books are assur. The Sefer Hachinuch (387) writes:
??? ?? ???? ?? ??? ????? ????? ???? ???? ??? ????? ????? ???? ???? ???? ??? ???? ?????? ??????? ?????? ????? ???? ?????? ??? ??? ?????? ????, ????? ??? ???? ??? ?????? ???? ????? ?????? ?????? ????? ?? ?????? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ???? ???? ???? ?? ???? ?? ??? ?? ???? ??? ?? ???? ??? ??????
In other words (the derasha of ???? ????? ?? ????? ????? ?????? ?? ???? notwithstanding), ??? ????? is not specifically referring to “inappropriate” things; it is referring to any (excessive) pursuit of physical pleasures. The Rambam in Sefer Hamitzvos (47) similarly writes:
????? ???? ???? ????? ?? ????? ????? ????? ????? ??? ?? ???? ?? ???? ???’ ????? ?????? ?? ???? ????? ????? ????? ????? ????? ???? ?? ?? ?? ??? ???? ????? ???? ???? ???? ??? ?????? ??????? ?????? ?????? ???
Also, according to R’ Moshe the issur is specifically ??? ????? ????? ???? ????.
It is perhaps notable that the Pele Yoetz, in the section on nivul peh, speaks severely about speaking and listening to nivul peh but makes no mention of reading it.
March 27, 2015 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #1148808Jewish ThinkerParticipantThe gemara in Brachos 12B learns out that ??? ????? is hirhuri avierah.
March 27, 2015 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #1148809Patur Aval AssurParticipantI preempted that with my parenthetical.
March 27, 2015 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #1148810Jewish ThinkerParticipant???? ????? is not ????.
March 27, 2015 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #1148811Patur Aval AssurParticipantThe Sifri and the Yalkut Shimoni have the girsa as ????. But regardless of whether the derasha is referring to ???? or ?????? ????? or both, my point was that according to the Rambam and the Sefer Hachinuch it is not limited to those categories; it applies to all pursuit of gashmius.
March 29, 2015 1:57 am at 1:57 am #1148812Jewish ThinkerParticipantI think you missed my point. ???? ????? is ???? ????? ?? ?????” .?????”
March 29, 2015 2:21 am at 2:21 am #1148813Patur Aval AssurParticipantWhere did I indicate anything to the contrary?
March 29, 2015 2:27 am at 2:27 am #1148814Jewish ThinkerParticipantMy mistake. ???? ?????, not “????”, another mistake I made.
March 30, 2015 12:37 am at 12:37 am #1148815☢️ Rand0m3x 🎲ParticipantJT, do you have a m.m. that’s it’s forbidden to use curse words?
March 30, 2015 12:53 am at 12:53 am #1148816☢️ Rand0m3x 🎲ParticipantIt is perhaps notable that the Pele Yoetz, in the section on nivul peh, speaks severely about speaking and listening to nivul peh but makes no mention of reading it.
The Pele Yoetz lived in Bulgaria when it was part of the
Ottoman Empire, which had very low literacy rates. It seems
likely that the issue would never have come up.
March 30, 2015 1:15 am at 1:15 am #1148817JosephParticipantComlink: Jewish men have generally always had high literacy rates even when living in areas where the local gentile population were mostly illiterate.
March 30, 2015 1:28 am at 1:28 am #1148818☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYes, but that type of material may not have been published.
March 30, 2015 1:52 am at 1:52 am #1148819☢️ Rand0m3x 🎲ParticipantThank you, DaasYochid. 🙂 That is exactly what I meant.
March 30, 2015 1:59 am at 1:59 am #1148820JosephParticipantDY makes a very good point. But it certainly is a different point than the one Comlink made that I addressed.
March 30, 2015 2:22 am at 2:22 am #1148821☢️ Rand0m3x 🎲Participant(Perhaps my last post wasn’t approved when you wrote yours?)
What I meant was that the non-existence of a literate lower
class among non-Jews would mean that such “literature” would
not have an audience, and therefore would not be published,
not that the Pele Yoetz’s audience was illiterate.
