When someone gives you a bandage when you need it, you may think it’s fair to give them one in return when you get a chance to buy some. But by giving someone a Band-Aid when they have no need of it, it implies that you wish them to need it. So don’t pay back a Band-Aid with a Band-Aid.
Lior: Most Poskim say that neighbors (and friends) aren’t Makpid on those little differences so it’s okay.
Don’t pay back a bottle of milk with another bottle of milk as it may be ribbis if the bottle you give contains a bit more milk than the bottle you received. So take a bit off first to insure that it isn’t more and ask the loaner mechila in case it is a bit less.
They comparable measurements between one bottle and the next isn’t necessarily precise in regards to both being exactly filled to the brim.

Off topic but when I saw this thread all I thought of was the Marvelous Midos Machine (I think!) song about nekamah “don’t pay back a bad deed with a bad deed of your own…”

Sam: That point would seem to help if you underpay (since as you said their mochel) but not if you overpay (since it is ribbis even if their not makpid.)
Lior: Not true. It’s not Ribbis because it’s normal behavior and the extra is just an everyday neighborly minute Matanah.
The chashash ribbis is if the price of a container of milk goes up, but two bottles of pre-measured milk, even if one has ? oz. more, are worth precisely the same amount.
DY: Se’ah B’se’ah is a separate issue from the issue Poskim discuss of lending vegetables (where paying back a carrot for a carrot will necessarily not be precisely the same size).
I’m saying that this isn’t like vegetables because the two containers are considered identical.
