does anyone know how to go about patenting an invention, i dont have a lot of money, just enough to make ends meet so i cant spend money up front
November 9, 2014 4:48 am at 4:48 am #10403692qwertyParticipantYou write it out with all the details and mail it to yourself. But dont open the envelope until you are in front of a judge trying to prove that you came up with it first.
Hatzlacha!

but im serious
November 9, 2014 12:00 pm at 12:00 pm #1040371RandomexMemberSigh… I thought we lived in the age of Google. Try searching for “patent process.” If you can’t (due to a filter), just say the word and someone will (probably) copy and paste the necessary information.

shkoyach, i google it before however one step i need is hire a patent lawyer, which costs money which i dont have, but thanks for the tip, ill figure out what to do
November 9, 2014 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1040373🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantyou might be able to get the forms and fill them out yourself. Sometimes a lawyer isn’t required as much as he is needed for your own protection.
November 9, 2014 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #1040374squeakParticipantI don’t know anything at all about this but I know I’ve heard ads on the radio thousands of times for “freeinventorskit”. If you’ve never heard of it, maybe it’s worth checking out (just make sure that you’re not required to sign too much away for the sake of the free boost start).
November 9, 2014 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm #1040375☕️coffee addictParticipantsyag,
i agree, however it is a little complicated for me, what i would really like is someone to help me and i would give them a cut, instead of paying up front
squeak,
yeah, i heard it too, however if its like other companies they dont work for you and charge you up front fees
November 9, 2014 9:15 pm at 9:15 pm #1040376–ParticipantYou don’t need to have the patent issued to start manufacturing. The initial filing fees aren’t that much and if sales aren’t enough to pay for the patent, it’s probably not worth manufacturing.

ty for your imput, i was planning on selling the idea to a company (its a game and i wanted to sell it to hasbro)

None of the big toy companies will even consider looking at your idea. The last thing they want is to get sued because a product they make has similarities to an idea they once saw. Once you have a real product you can try selling it to them.
November 10, 2014 12:38 am at 12:38 am #1040379akupermaParticipantThe mailing it to yourself works for copyright, not patent. For patent you need to file with the Patent Office, which then has to agree it is indeed an invention. This gets tricky which is why one tends to use professionals to help.
November 10, 2014 1:53 am at 1:53 am #1040380☕️coffee addictParticipantdash,
thats what i was sayinng, patent and then sell it, not manufacturing without a patent (remember, i dont have money for this)
November 10, 2014 2:48 am at 2:48 am #1040381PATENTANSWERMemberYou are allowed to represent yourself before the patent office. However, it is complicated and you probably won’t get anywhere. If you really don’t have money, the USPTO has a pro bono program (Google USPTO and pro bono). You have to meet various requirements (i.e. income has to be below a certain limit, you have to have some knowledge of the patent system which you could learn, and you actually have to have an invention).
If you don’t qualify for pro bono assistance, you may have some luck with the USPTO pro se assistance program (Google USPTO and pro se).
If that doesn’t work, read up on patent law from the internet. I would not represent myself without being informed.
If you have some money to spend, try to get a patent agent. Since they do not have a law degree, they usually are cheaper.
Hatzlocha.

November 10, 2014 3:17 am at 3:17 am #1040383pixelateMemberMost patent firms charge about $3,000 just to do a patent search to make sure your idea is both patentable and not already filed. It costs AT LEAST an additional $20,000 to file a patent, and until your idea is at least patent pending, companies are not interested, and even when you obtain a patent, it’s not so easy to get a company’s attention. Everyone with some level of ingenuity at one time in their life figures they have a million dollar idea. Best thing is to get a normal sustainable job, and don’t waste your money until you can afford to. good luck.
