Now sign your name at the bottom.
Dearest Councilperson,
Personally, I think it’s ludicrous that every street in every city is open to traffic. That means that you really can’t stroll outside without stopping every few feet for cars, not to mention all the irritations that cars bring.
When I build my own city, there will be residential areas in which vehicular traffic is prohibited. There will be a few big streets every few blocks where all the cars can go, and on the small streets it will be forbidden except in the case of emergency, or to drop off/pick up heavy loads, or for the sake of elderly and infirm. In those cases (not counting emergencies,) there will be a 7mph speed limit. Use of honking and headlights strictly prohibited (if you can’t see, don’t drive) and pedestrians will have the right of way. Parking opportunities can be worked out with just an iota of creativity.
I will now relate a personal anecdote. One night, a car alarm went off outside (something forbidden in the residential parts of my city) and after 1/2 an hour, when it still going, I was seriously considering going out with a bar of soap and scrawling across the windshield that if you don’t hear your car alarm, what’s the point? (Only in a lot stronger language.) I didn’t, because I am a model citizen and am just too nice for such mean behavior. It happened to have been raining that night.
You’re one of the best politicians I know, and I applaud that which you continuously do for our council. I’m aware that it may be hard to implement all my ideas, but I’m sure you have a lot to learn from my ideas and will do the best you can.
Sincerely and respectfully yours, always,
An avid fan whose ears and eyes hurt and is rapidly gaining weight.

Just one question (among the many more), if it was raining that night, why didn’t you scrawl with that bar of soap?

(sigh) I was afraid of comments like that. My chosen username was screwdriverdelight, until mods changed it for reasons I don’t know. I don’t mind, but it doesn’t shouldn’t reflect on my driving skills.

It just happened to have been raining, I didn’t plan it.
What are the many more?

October 26, 2014 11:44 am at 11:44 am #1138183SayIDidIt™Participantheadlights strictly prohibited (if you can’t see, don’t drive)
Headlights are very helpful to pedestrians walking outside at night! Without them, how would you see that car coming at you?
And in your make believe city, you’d probably have very dim street lamps, right? So no street lights and no headlights! Let’s see you drive in the dark! (Yes, their will still be cars, trucks, buses, emergency vehicles in the streets – you said so yourself. There is no such a thing as a perfect world. Sorry!)
And “sometimes” honking can save a life.
These inventions may be annoying to you because people abuse them, but their real functions can be lifesavers!
Would you also want silent cars? Why not? Much less noise! Well, read this:
Ruling: Liberal Democrats said blind or partially-sighted pedestrians would be vulnerable
It follows lobbying from British MEPs and campaign groups including Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars such as the all-electric BMWi3 or the Toyota Prius currently emit very little sound when running on electric power only.
Campaigners say this particularly dangerous for partially-sighted and blind pedestrians.
Earlier proposals from the European Commission called for the installation of an artificial sound system to be done on a voluntary basis only.
But Liberal Democrat MEPs successfully introduced an amendment making this a mandatory requirement for all electric and hybrid vehicles.
Following the vote manufacturers in the EU will have five years to comply with the new rules.

Maybe you can use an iota of your creativity to solve some major parking problems in NY (and lots of other places)?
First show how you can make normal parking in a normal city. Then you can start figuring out your abnormal city! (I really don’t want to schlep all my groceries from my assigned parking space 3 blocks from my home when their are empty curbs all the way to my house…)

October 31, 2014 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #1138186screwdriverdelightParticipantFunnybone: Out of town is even worse, because they don’t have sidewalks nor proper lighting, so the glare from headlights is worse. (It does help with the noise, though)
Sidi: “Yes, their will still be cars, trucks, buses, emergency vehicles in the streets” Read the fine print. I said these rules do not apply to emergeny vehicles. And Cars, trucks, and busses? Nt-nt. Not in the residential areas. (with certain exceptions, and then at 7 mph which is slow enough not to be dangerous)
And there will deffinitely be stret lights. I have never been blinded by a street lamp.
“And “sometimes” honking can save a life.” So honk.
“First show how you can make normal parking in a normal city. Then you can start figuring out your abnormal city!”
I’m building this city from scratch. I can find ways to build parking spaces. Not coming into a already-congested area. (And I could help out there, as it is. Build double decker streets.)
” (I really don’t want to schlep all my groceries from my assigned parking space 3 blocks from my home when their are empty curbs all the way to my house…)” You’re not paying attention. I said dropping off heavy packages is permitted.
And I didn’t have time to read through something that long excerpt, seeing as it probably bears no relevance, anyway.

They have LED lights now and even without cars, street lights pose a serious hazard to the perpetuity of my eyesight! And LED headlights…forget about it. I have to remind myself each time that it really is the night and the sun really is in the sky.

October 12, 2015 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm #1138190555ParticipantI wish you good luck! This idea is not so far fetched and even exists to a certain degree in Yerushalaim and Bnei Brak. There are places Looking more like alleys or even stairs that have street names. and no cars officially are allowed. Even Emergencv vehicles. (well, they actually don’t fit) Occasionally, some crazy on a motor cycle drives through and down the stairs.
Despite that, you’ll always find people on the busy streets even with kids. But you are right. It is much easier to let kids out to play knowing the car wont come to them. there is a significant distance they must go to reach the street.

February 21, 2016 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm #1138192screwdriverdelightParticipantThe honking issue was finally addressed by Simcha Felder in this past week’s Hamodia (Features page 9), although his claim that it’s done mostly by taxi drivers and that the way to deal with it is by urging the TLC to control their drivers is incorrect (understatement).
February 21, 2016 8:34 pm at 8:34 pm #1138193apushatayidParticipantI was on 13th avenue in BP earlier today. Plenty of honking. Not a taxi in sight. I wonder where he lives.
