Whether youre an Opera fan or not, whether youre at all familiar with Operas or not, we should be aware that Leon Klinghoffer’s tragic murder is being used in a very public way, in an opera to be staged at Lincoln Center by the Metropolitan Opera, with performances to begin within two weeks, filled with numerous Anti-Semitic slurs, to publicize and justify the workings of terrorists’ minds.
Let’s offer our voices in whatever way we can, whether by writing and calling politicians, or otherwise, in a dignified manner, on how this Opera is an affront to human morals and decency.
Klinghoffer was not even an Israeli, he was simply on a vacation, to celebrate his anniversary, and was shot and thrown overboard in his wheelchair.
Any attempt at twisted justification of this horrendous murder of an innocent person, (because we have to understand the mind of terrorists) is simply bizarre and beyond the pale.
Today they attempt to justify Anti-Semitic terrorists, tomorrow Nazis and ISIS, perhaps.
Those who are familiar with this specific opera have offered these quotes from the Opera:
“Wherever poor men are gathered, they can find Jews getting fat”.
“You know, how to cheat the simple…, pollute where you have exploited, defame those you cheated, and break your own law with idolatry.”
At one point, the terrorist leader says to Klinghoffer, “America is One Big Jew.”
Each night that this performance takes place, is almost like fresh Swastikas being painted, lor worse.
Yees we must daven, and speak up as well, to smear those who want this piece of Anti- Semitic propaganda replayed night after night.

October 6, 2014 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm #1036379AZOI.ISParticipantIm not sure which of our other papers have called attention to this, but The Jewish Press has condemned it loudly.
The first performance of this Opera called a “beautiful” work of art by critics, will take place on Monday October 20, and there’s a Rally planned against it at Lincoln Center at 6:30, at Broadway and West 65th street, with a caravan of 100 wheelchairs.
Posters are out publicizing this event, that say “Shame on the Met for Glorifying Terrorism” and “We are all Leon Klinghoffer”. How true. If it were up to those terrorists, it definitely would have been all of us.
October 6, 2014 1:29 pm at 1:29 pm #1036380oomisParticipantI have already written several letters to the IIC (idiot in charge)Gelb, voicing my extreme disgust, not only at the appalling lack of sensitivity to the Klinghoffer family, but the affront to ALL of humanity. This opera glorifies and gives moral equivalency to the terrorists with real fighters for freedom and justice. Forget about the perversion of historical facts. Apparently that is of no concern to Gelb.
I got a thank you for my opinion letter from the Met, which was incredibly patronizing, and I immediately fired back a response telling them that it is despicable that they are digging in their heels in the face of so much legitimate criticism and the rancor and predictable Anti-Semitism this opera is about to cause to proliferate, but their intractable stance and intransigence in owning up to this ill-advised (to say the least)plan, is beyond appalling.
EVERYONE needs to flood the Met with letters and e-mails,d enouncing these plans, whether or not you would ever attend an opera, from the chareidi down to the least-affiliated Jew. And I would hope that people of good will and common sense who are NIST unzerer, would do the same. But I am not holding my breath in this PC society where it has long since been forgotten that “Freedom of Speech” does not mean one can at will yell “fire!” in a crowded theater.

This is an important enough issue to busy ourselves with, even during the Yom Tov season. We have to understand that the Gdolim arent going to offer opinions on an Opera or encourage going to rallies involving Operas, but the souls of our 6,000,000 and Israeli fallen soldiers and terror victims are depending on us to both daven and speak up and not allow the equivalent of fresh swastikas to be painted onstage every night of this performance, without public reaction.
October 6, 2014 6:21 pm at 6:21 pm #1036382charliehallParticipantThe main effect of these protests is to generate free advertising for an opera that would have played to half-empty houses. The Met isn’t going to cancel the opera as it has too many contractual obligations in the way.

Never say never.
You say- Grin and bear it? Would you feel the same way if you were a blood relative of Klinghoffer? We are all blood relatives of Klinghoffer.

you would suspect 100 times more publicity and the showws cancellation, if it was about michael brown or trayvon martin, obama, sharpton, and others would make this a race issue until the high heavens
October 20, 2014 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #1036385jewishfeminist02MemberKlinghoffer’s children wrote an op-ed for the Times of Israel about the opera. Google “Death of Klinghoffer is an injustice to our father’s memory”.
October 20, 2014 11:00 pm at 11:00 pm #1036386rightwingerMembercan I have their email address?
October 21, 2014 12:31 am at 12:31 am #1036387nishtdayngesheftParticipantCharlie,
An email and letter campaign will not get them any free advertising. However, it will show the Met that you think this is wholly inappropriate.
On the other hand, a raucous rally, with a loudmouthed publicity hound, shamefully wearing a tallit, hamming it up for the media will generate free publicity for the Opera and negative press for Jews.
BTW, the following was reported today, that Avi Weiss, clad in his ubiquitous shawl, was protesting outside the Met.
Hmmmmm.
October 21, 2014 12:07 pm at 12:07 pm #1036388zahavasdadParticipantThe Met is not like a normal business, they only get about 60% of their operating budget from ticket sales, the shortfall is made up from the City, Large Donors and corporate donations.
Some of the larger jewish donors were unhappy with the opera and the other donors suddenly became anonymous. Businesses do not want to be associated with controversial things.
The Opera last night did not sell out and there are plenty of tickets for upcoming showings (You can check the Met website and verify this)
And since there is city money as well that could be in danger as well. So in the end this will directly hurt the Mets bottom line. In fact the Met almost closed due to the budget shortfall and problems in making up for it
October 21, 2014 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #1036389charliehallParticipantSales of tickets have been slow. My concern turned out not to be warranted. And that was my only concern — this opera is awful. Had I not been at the dentist yesterday I would have been at the protest. I hope that the Met takes a bath on this.

You just posted “Had I not been at the dentist yesterday I would have been at the protest.”
Yet earlier you posted ” The main effect of these protests is to generate free advertising for an opera that would have played to half-empty houses. The Met isn’t going to cancel the opera as it has too many contractual obligations in the way. “
What gives? There appears to be some huge inconsistency in your stance.

No inconsistency. The only reason that I objected to mass protests was because I didn’t want to help sell tickets. But in fact, even with the protests, ticket sales are slow. I can’t think of any other reason not to protest. If one is to be honest, one must re-evaluate ones position when data that do not support it become available.

you didnt know, democrats are a contradiction in and of themmselves
October 22, 2014 2:10 am at 2:10 am #1036394AZOI.ISParticipantWould de Blasio be fighting for the right to stage art/opera where other races are negatively portrayed? No way.
What a letdown you are, Mayor de Blasio!
