Hello,
I’m a baal tshuva and studying in Litvish Yeshiva for quite long time.
I’m considering to relocate to US/Canada/UK.
I want to try go for a Yeshiva, Litvish or yekkes. I really find myself more connected to the yekkes although Litvish is also great. can you recommend me on any yeshiva? maybe yekkes community?
About shidduchim, does American girl for example would consider to marry an Israeli?
What about job? how common is for men to work after marriage?
August 31, 2014 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #1031434on the ballParticipantThere aren’t really any yekkish yeshivas.
If you are in Israel I suggest you speak to an Anglo Rosh Yeshiva or Magid Shiur or maybe any American or Brit (there are hundreds in the Mir) who will be able to guide you.
August 31, 2014 9:37 pm at 9:37 pm #1031435amaaretzParticipantI would suggest you check out ????? ?? ????? in Baltimore, Maryland. It seems to fit you criteria.
!?????
September 1, 2014 2:05 am at 2:05 am #1031436writersoulParticipantI know several baalei teshuva (as well as several non-baalei teshuva, as a matter of fact), including one who was not American (though not Israeli either), who did very well at Shor Yoshuv in Far Rockaway.
A yekke COMMUNITY would most likely be Breuer’s in Washington Heights, but I don’t think that that’s what you want.
No reason why an American girl wouldn’t want to marry a nice Israeli guy, and what you do after marriage is your business. Plenty work, plenty don’t, and whichever yeshiva you decide to attend will ultimately influence you. It is common, however, for even those who want to end up going to work to learn for a bit after marriage- obviously, that’s not essential.

#on the ball, thanks I will try
#notamaaretz, Can you tell me how can I connect to them? phone or email?
I saw on wikipedia there are many yekkes jews in Baltimore, is it also this way today? are there any yekkes synagogues?
#writersoul, about the Breuer community, why do you think it’s not what I want? can you tell me more about it?
I’ve also saw some yekkes communities on this page: no links allowed -79
Can you tell me more about it?
Thanks.
September 2, 2014 12:06 am at 12:06 am #1031438richashuParticipantThere is a great yeshiva in Monsey, NY for Israeli Baalei Teshuva called Ohr Yisrael. It is litvish oriented. There are also Yekkei shuls in monsey as well.
September 2, 2014 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #1031439usersMemberThanks ricashu but I want to go to a regular Yeshiva.
Can you tell me more about “Young Israel” communities?
Do you know anything about “young israel of wavecrest & bayswater”?
can you tell me more about Breuer community?
September 3, 2014 2:16 am at 2:16 am #1031440yehudayonaParticipantYoung Israel of Wavecrest and Bayswater is one of several shuls in Bayswater, which is part of Far Rockaway. Young Israels cover a wide section of the spectrum of Orthodoxy. YIWB is towards the right end of the spectrum of Young Israels. The Morah D’asra is Rabbi Eliezer Feuer, son of Rabbi Avraham Chaim Feuer and grandson of Rabbi Gifter ZTL. In terms of opportunities for learning, Bayswater is close to many institutions in the Far Rockaway/Five Towns community.

September 3, 2014 1:45 pm at 1:45 pm #1031442☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantParnassah, shidduchim, chinuch, health.
September 3, 2014 2:41 pm at 2:41 pm #1031443BarryLS1Participanttakahmamash: Best question yet!!
Users, Baltimore has 2 shuls that are Yekkish. Glen Avenue and Agudah.
takahmamash is right, you belong in Israel.

Parnassah, shidduchim, chinuch, health
All of which can be found in E”Y.

Agudah is yeshivish/litvish; it certainly is not Yekkish, nor does it follow any Yekkish minhagim. Glen Avenue has many Yekkish members, but it has not been an “official” Yekkie shule for many years, ever since Rav Hopfer became the rav of the shule.
September 3, 2014 5:54 pm at 5:54 pm #1031445☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAll of which can be found in E”Y
Different people have different needs and different circumstances. To assert that everyone can achieve and obtain the same things in E”Y as in Chu”l is naive. Or, more likely, agenda driven, but either way, ridiculous.
September 3, 2014 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #1031446oyyoyyoyParticipantTM, we get it, you feel you dont need to care about anything else since you live in israel, the biggest mitzvah
September 3, 2014 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #1031447zahavasdadParticipantThere is a old joke
(Q) How can you make a little money in Israel
(A) Bring alot with you
It is very expensive to live in Israel and its tough to make Parnassoh there
I dont know if the OP realizes thats you just cant move from Israel to UK or USA, to get to USA you need a VISA, if you dont have one you cannot come to USA and even if you do get one you are not allowed to work without a Green Card or some authorization and there is no social net in USA like there is in Israel
September 4, 2014 8:39 am at 8:39 am #1031448takahmamashParticipantTM, we get it, you feel you dont need to care about anything else since you live in israel, the biggest mitzvah
That’s 100% untrue. Parnassah, shidduchim, chinuch, health – I care about all of them. (Well, maybe not chinuch anymore, because my youngest is finished school and in the army.) Because I do care about these things I’m willing to work hard at all of them to make sure my family has what it needs. And no, we’re not rich materialists – our lives have been simplified tremendously since we made aliyah.
It just pains me that Israelis, especially when they’re frum, think the grass is greener in the U.S. It’s not.
September 4, 2014 9:41 am at 9:41 am #1031449usersMemberThank you all.
My options right now are Yeshivat Ner Israel in Baltimore and Yeshivat Beit Yehuda in Detroit. Can you tell me more about them?
Hashkafa? way of Limmud? what do students do after marriage? anything else?
Also, Does anyone know anything about yeshiva Shaare Torah in Manchester, UK?
Do you know any other Yeshivos in UK?
September 7, 2014 9:03 am at 9:03 am #1031450usersMemberAny one? please?
September 7, 2014 10:47 am at 10:47 am #1031451charliehallParticipantI was told this past Shabat that the Breuer’s community in the Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan has a post high school learning program. Check out K’hal Adath Jeshurun and Yeshiva R. S. R. Hirsch. The community is also a short walk from Yeshiva University, with all its resources. Good luck!
September 7, 2014 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm #1031452yytzParticipantWhy are you drawn to the Yekkes? Because of their minhagim? Or the derech of Rav Hirsch? Either way, the Yekkes are a pretty small community in the US, and it’s hard to understand why someone would want to leave Eretz Yisrael to join them (or to study in a Litvish Yeshivah, of which they are tons in Israel).
Compared to Israel, the US is not a very good place to be a frum Jew. Day school tuition is much more expensive, and there are far fewer choices in terms of schools. If your children go off the derech (which happens to even the best of families, Rachmana litzlan), they will likely marry gentiles and give you non-Jewish grandchildren, while in Israel they would most likely marry Jews and have Jewish grandchildren. US inner-city violent and property crime is much worse than Hamas rockets (and most big Jewish communities are in such areas). Real estate is crazily expensive in nearly all big Jewish communities; otherwise, you can live in very isolated Jewish communities with few Jewish amenities or frum families. There are few kosher restaurants outside of NY.
Even if there are not very many Yekkes in Israel, I’m sure there are similar communities, and if you’re looking for people interested in Rav Hirch’s ideas, I’m sure you’ll find them. There are so many Jewish communities to explore in Israel, from the chardalim, the moderate Anglo left-wing Yeshivish, the neo-hippie Chavakuk (Chabad-Breslov-Kook), the “new” charedim (chardashim, blue shirts), etc. Perhaps you would be comfortable among people who are somewhere in between MO and Yeshivish, RWMO or left-wing Yeshivish, of which there are many in Israel. There has to be something for everyone in Israel — there is something new every day.
Anyway, sorry for the rant…just thought I’d throw out some thoughts.
September 7, 2014 7:10 pm at 7:10 pm #1031453charliehallParticipant“US inner-city violent and property crime is much worse than Hamas rockets (and most big Jewish communities are in such areas).”
The NYPD precinct including Washington Heights, which includes the Breuer’s community I mentioned along with Yeshiva University, has not had a homicide this year as of 8/27/2014. There was only 1 in all of 2013.
New York is a very safe city compared to every other large American city.
September 8, 2014 12:47 am at 12:47 am #1031454yytzParticipantYes, some parts of NY are safe, and NYC is overall safer than other big cities in the US. But NY is an exceptionally unaffordable city. And Brooklyn, where most of NY’s Jews live, has hundreds of murders a year.
Israel’s murder rate is 1.8/100,000, while the US’s is over twice as high, 4.7/100. The US’s rate of robbery is four times that of Israel. NYC’s robbery rate is 243/100,000, while Israel’s is one-sixth of that, 36/100,000.
The traffic fatality rate (in terms of the number of people killed in car accidents per capita) is also much higher in the US.
September 8, 2014 2:30 am at 2:30 am #1031455yaakov doeParticipantAs a Brooklyite who’s not been murdered, I must dispute the claim. There are fewer than 100 murders a year in Brooklyn and most victims know the killer or they themselves have a criminal record. It is highy unusual for a law abiding citizen to be the victim of any violent crime.
We are safe in Brookyn. We read of horrific traffic accidents with multiple fatalities in Israel, but rarely in Brooklyn.
September 8, 2014 3:02 pm at 3:02 pm #1031456BarryLS1Participanttakahmamash: Agudah has lots of Yekkish minhagim.
