First of all, is it allowed? Do we find any of our post-Terach ancestors owning pet rocks?
On Shabbos, it is probably Muktza unless you do something to it. Otherwise, if it is small, perhaps you may not even pet it.
Are you allowed to talk to it? Perhaps you may say anything other than Atta Yeledetani. What if it is older than you?
If you get angry at it are you allowed to throw a stone at it?

April 29, 2014 9:34 pm at 9:34 pm #1012893To be or not to beMemberDepends, Is it a good rock?
April 29, 2014 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #1012894DaMosheParticipantIt’s completely assur! It might lead to owning a pet dog!
April 29, 2014 11:16 pm at 11:16 pm #1012895zahavasdadParticipantPerfectly Muttar and if you see someone being Mechalel Shabbos you can throw it at them
April 29, 2014 11:32 pm at 11:32 pm #1012896mobicoParticipantA well-trained pet rock hurls ITSELF at cars being driven by Jews on Shabbos.
April 30, 2014 1:07 am at 1:07 am #1012897👑RebYidd23ParticipantNo, it’s avodah zarah.
April 30, 2014 1:45 am at 1:45 am #1012898Sam2ParticipantSomeone once told me that the Rambam holds that talking to an inanimate object is Apikorsus. I’m not sure if he’s right or why that would be though.
April 30, 2014 2:08 am at 2:08 am #1012899To be or not to beMemberI have a rock inside my head does that count?
April 30, 2014 2:58 am at 2:58 am #1012900🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantI used to have a pet rock, but the local pet shop charged a lot for rock food so I had to get rid of it. Luckily, one of my neighbors was looking for a pet, so I didn’t have to turn it out on the street.
April 30, 2014 3:25 am at 3:25 am #1012901HaLeiViParticipantSam, we know that Horo’as Sha’ah can’t be used for Avoda Zara. If so, how was Moshe Rabbeinu supposed to talk to the rock? I think this is proof against what that person said.
On the other hand, this rule might only apply to real, original Avoda. I say this because we do find Horo’as Sha’ah to use Avoda Zara animals on a Bama. I think this was by Gilad.
April 30, 2014 3:27 am at 3:27 am #1012902HaLeiViParticipantNow, my Shabbos question is, is Machshava enough or does it need a Maaseh? Also, according to the Mechaber about Kadur, does a Maaseh even help?
April 30, 2014 4:19 am at 4:19 am #1012903🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantI used to have a pet rock. I called him rock. but i never actually spoke to him so no worry about a”z there. I think my mom threw it out.
April 30, 2014 6:02 am at 6:02 am #1012904yitzchokmParticipantthis topic is EPIC!
popa! where art thou?
April 30, 2014 6:50 am at 6:50 am #1012905YW Moderator-42ModeratorMy imaginary pet rock’s name is Tzuri. She is generally even-tempered except on Purim when she gets stoned.
April 30, 2014 7:25 am at 7:25 am #1012906mobicoParticipantyitzchokm – What you probably meant was, this thread ROCKS!
April 30, 2014 7:38 am at 7:38 am #1012907Sam2ParticipantHaLeiVi: Those rules don’t apply to Moshe Rabbeinu anyway, as the reason for them is they are a Hach’chasha of Moshe’s Nevua.
April 30, 2014 11:07 am at 11:07 am #1012908☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMine’s name is Evan. We feed him Cocoa Pebbles.
April 30, 2014 4:05 pm at 4:05 pm #1012909HaLeiViParticipantThat applies to the other rule, that it can only be Leshaata. But as far as being a Hak’chasha of Toras Moshe, why tthe difference between AZ and any other Aveira? Obviously, the difference is inherent, there can’t be a Horo’as Shaah for AZ.
Another problem I have with that claim is the Heter of Ahava Veyir’a, in which the Rambam takes it even further than others, IIRC.
April 30, 2014 4:08 pm at 4:08 pm #1012910HaLeiViParticipantThere is a different problem with talking to it. Since it doesn’t understand, you are transgressing Al Tochach Letz. (If you think this is Letzanus, then surely you may not rebuke me.)
April 30, 2014 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1012911To be or not to beMemberMy rock is actually quite serious, not a letz at all (that’s his owners job). He understands things quite well.He is actually finishing up his degree in geological engineering at stonybrook
April 30, 2014 8:22 pm at 8:22 pm #1012912yitzykParticipantOn shabbos, you can peek at out of the corner of your eye as you sing “Tzur Mishelo”.
If it dies R”L, you can say “Hatzur tamim Paolo” at the levaye.
You can give it ground coffee for breakfast.
Name yours ‘5 miles’, then tell everyone you walked 5 miles today.
April 30, 2014 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #1012913To be or not to beMemberAnd you could sing it to sleep with “rock” chazak
April 30, 2014 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #1012914👑RebYidd23ParticipantIt’s not speaking that makes it avodah zarah, it’s believing.
May 1, 2014 12:57 am at 12:57 am #1012915HaLeiViParticipantWhat about seeing?
May 1, 2014 1:23 am at 1:23 am #1012916To be or not to beMemberDoes anyone know of any kosher for pesach rock food?
May 1, 2014 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #1012917YW Moderator-42ModeratorTry shmura matzah balls without seltzer…
May 1, 2014 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #1012918To be or not to beMemberwhy not seltzer?
May 1, 2014 8:35 pm at 8:35 pm #1012919apushatayidParticipantmy rebbe always told me to stay away from rock.
May 1, 2014 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm #1012920👑RebYidd23ParticipantSeltzer makes for a very fluffy, fragile mix.
