Do you wear teffilin on Chol Hamoed?
I will start, No
April 10, 2014 12:51 pm at 12:51 pm #1011734👑RebYidd23ParticipantThis gender discrimination thing, which I am not calling unjustified and with which I would actually completely agree, does not work because a poster’s gender is not always known.
April 10, 2014 1:06 pm at 1:06 pm #1011735MakcklemoreMemberYes. My father is a ba’al teshuva, and I guess he asked a rabbi and he said he should.

April 10, 2014 1:32 pm at 1:32 pm #1011737TheReaderParticipantI’m not a ‘Litfak’ and I wear, with a brocho.

True, BUT, it does attract attention and get more people to answer the poll, (even if they are MO Women!)
April 10, 2014 2:12 pm at 2:12 pm #1011740besalelParticipantthe ramu says one should wear tfillin but make the bruchu quietly. i never understood that. can someone explain why is it the ramu says to make the bruchu quietly?
April 10, 2014 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #1011741ChortkovParticipantI do, and I make a Brocho.
I imagine – just pointing out – that the ‘not for women’ was just so that the poll doesn’t get overbalanced with a load of ‘no’s’. But I suppose the OP wouldn’t mind if you replied whether your husbands or fathers wear tefillin! Or if you are a WOW, then you can tell us whether or not YOU wear tefillin!
April 10, 2014 2:57 pm at 2:57 pm #1011742charliehallParticipantI have not in the past but after consulting with my rav, plan to start doing so next week. (I am Ashkenazic and most Ashkenazim should follow the Rema.)
April 10, 2014 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #1011743EpisParticipantTheReader, Then you must be single and a bobover chusid. Or just confused.
charliehall, DON’T DEVIATE FROM YOUR MINHAGIM!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 10, 2014 4:42 pm at 4:42 pm #1011744dafbiyunParticipantI do, but I try to be careful to daven with a minyan of all tefillin wearers.(there is a very nice tefillin minyan at Bais Yosef Nevardek in Flatbush at 8:30)This avoids the problem of Lo Sisgodidu. Its interesting, my father- in -law says that 50 years ago almost everyone wore tefillin; nowadays I’d say at least 80% don’t.
April 10, 2014 5:11 pm at 5:11 pm #1011745Sam2ParticipantEpis: He’s saying that because he’s Ashkenazi, his Minhag should be to wear. So, presumably, his Minhag was changed (not necessarily properly) at some point and he wants to change back.
April 10, 2014 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #1011746TheReaderParticipantEpis – What does single have to do with this??
I am not a chosid – I am ashkenaz…and most of the people who I know [none are chassidish] wear tefillin and make a brocho.
April 10, 2014 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm #1011747hakohen53ParticipantI am definitely not a litvak – but I put on tefilin on chol hamoed with a brocho. To add an additional twist, most people, including my family, take off the tefilin on chol hamoed before Hallel. However, my father’s minhag, still from Europe, was to make an exception on the first day of chol hamoed Pesach at which time we take them off after leining before musaf. The reason for this is because the parsha of tefilin is part of the reading of the Torah on that day.
April 10, 2014 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #1011748nishtdayngesheftParticipantMinhag ashkenaz would mean of German origin, not jut someone who davens nusach Ashkenaz. The GR’A and those who follow minhagei HaGR”A do not ear tefilin even though they daven nusach Ashkenaz. This why you almost do not find people in EY wearing tefilin on chol hamoed.
Vilna was in the heart of Lita, so saying it is a “litfish” minhagg is stam shtuyot.
Chasidim who follow minhag Sanz wear tefilin on chol hamoed either until they are 18 or they are married (there are slight differences in different chassidus)
April 10, 2014 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm #1011749LogicianParticipantSounds here like there just aren’t too many chasidishe fellows posting on YWN. B”H!
April 10, 2014 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #1011751dafbiyunParticipantInteresting story: About 38 years ago on chol hamoed I was (a kid) davening in ( the old) Chaim Berlin- in the ladies section which was about 5 feet up and had a curtain. there were about 20 of us tefillen wearers sitting near the curtain. Suddenly Rav Hutner ztz’l comes in, through the ezras noshim, and surveys the tefillen wearers. He gives a majestic wave with his silver topped cane and in a booming voice announces: “DE ALLE MIT TIFFILLEN ZOL GAIN TZUM ANDRE ZIET FUN EZRAS NOSHIM.”( ALL THOSE WITH TEFFILLIN SHOULD GO TO THE OTHER SIDE IF THE EZRAS NOSHIM). He obviously felt quite strongly about lo sisgodidu!
April 10, 2014 9:37 pm at 9:37 pm #1011752dafbiyunParticipanthakohen- I believe the Taz brings down the minhag to keep tiffilen on till after laining on first day chol hamoed. I believe almost everyone follows that minhag
April 11, 2014 8:42 am at 8:42 am #1011753jbaldy22Memberi dont wear tefillin during chol hamoed. yerushalmi family and minhagei hagrah (at least some of them hard to keep track of what they keep from the gra and why).
April 11, 2014 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #1011754reb.yaakovMembernishtdayngesheft
It is quite well known that in Lita before the war (including Vilna) almost everyone wore tefillin on chol hamoed. your mistake is in assuming that people followed minhagei hagra in Lita. In fact, even in Vilna, they did not follow this minhag or many others(except in the Gra’s kloiz). Only in Eretz Yisrael did the talmididei HaGra begin to implement his shittos. R Moshe has a tshuva (I believe it’s in the back of R Eiders sefer on hilchos niddah) where he has complaints against those who follow minhagei HaGra lekulah in Eretz Yisrael and says they never dared to do such a thing in Vilna (he is talking about zmanim there, I’m just using it to point out that the minhagei HaGra were not kept in Vilna).
April 11, 2014 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm #1011756nishtdayngesheftParticipantreb.yaakov,
The point I was making is that it was not a universal hanhogah of litvaks. Which point remains.
April 11, 2014 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #1011757DikDukDuckParticipantDo I wear teffilin on Chol Hamoed?
No.
April 14, 2014 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #1011758dafbiyunParticipantOne of the rayos to wear tefillin on chol hamoed is from today’s daf!.The gemmorah brings down that R’ Shaishes allowed teffilin to be sent on Yom Tov. The hagaos ashry ( and Tosfos in Eiruvin )ask our Mishna allows only gifts which can be used on the “moed” to be sent on Yom tov. They answer that ” moed” in our mishna refers to chol hamoed and prove that tefillen are worn on Chol H’amoed . However the G’ra notes that the girsa of the Yerushalmi is ” af al pi shain tzorech yom tov”. Also the Tzlach asks what about the last day of tom tov or Shavuos, when there is no day of chol hamoed after. … according to the hagaos ashri the gemorrah should have not allowed tefillen to be sent on those days. A gut Yom Tov to all.
April 14, 2014 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #1011759Davar KatanMemberI am offended. why is this poll not for women.
April 14, 2014 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #1011760ChaimADMemberInstead of labeling this “not for women” and leaving half of your readership feeling marginalized and excluded without even knowing what the question is, why not just call it a poll for men? Or a poll about tefillin? I mean once you see the poll itself, it’s pretty obvious it’s a poll for men, so why throw negativity into the mix?
