LOL, with a weird title like that I hope lots of people will check this thread out.

You know those 3 bumps we do at the end of Shemoneh Esrei?

If you’re a woman you’re probly nodding your head, whereas the guys are probly like- huh?

So that’s my question. Why do women like, go up and down 3 times after finishing shemoneh esrie, while men just walk away?

I’m not sure if this is true- I have noticed it a few times, but maybe im mistaken…

    Anyone wanna shed some light?

I think men do it too. I do it and the last time I checked I was a man. I was told ur supposed to do it.

i think its a mistake and comes from the halachah thats your supposed to go three srteps forward after michayei hameisim, right before kedusha which has the three jumps. cud be wrong but my friend and i both came up with this pshat separately

Might as well jump, so go ahead and jump. 😛

@Macklemore – I feel self-conscious if I don’t. I’m curious to know if it’s required. While the Artscroll siddur tells me all of the other things I have to do, like at exactly what words I bow and bend my knees, etc., it doesn’t seem to say anything about “jumping”.

Okay then, I guess I was mistaken in thinking that males dont do that.

But now I’m curious. Why DO we do that?

Now that we’re on the topic of males jumping, I’ve heard of a minhag that the chazzan jumps when he says Kaddish. I haven’t seen this brought down anywhere. This sounds like it might be the same minhag by jumping at the end of shemone esrei. Does anyone know where this is from?

when davening b’tzibbur, some wait to step forward from shmoneh esrei til kedusha which goes into ‘kadosh’x3 when u rise up onto ur toes x3. So some person somewhere thought that was part of ending shmoneh esrei n not kedusha, and taught it as such to his/her students, and thus began a ”minhag” without reason. No u dont have to rise up on ur toes at the end of shmone esrei

Saysme – your exactly right. I asked a rabbi once and he said its assur to do to those 3 jumps at the end of shmoneh esrie.

    #1016449

i heard that you need to wait 3 seconds so we just do 3 jumps to count to 3

oy: I said the same thing. I was told that R’ Schachter and R’ Willig have both said the same as well. It’s apparently a very prevalent mistake, just like saying the words “Hashem S’fasai Tiftach Ufi Yagid Tehilasecha” while taking 3 steps back and forward.

nsnsh: You have to wait 3 seconds before stepping forward, not after.

It’s more of a rising to the toes, like trying to reach the level of malachim, than an all-out jump. Yes, I’ve heard that it has to do with taking three “hops” by kadosh, kadosh, kadosh. It may be a reminder that even if you’re not finished taking your three steps forward, but the chazzan starts kedusha, you should join in then.

Let me clarify it for everyone it all starts in when one person does it (which is not meant to be done) and everyone else coppies because maybe he is doing the right thing.

swell. we are all in agreement.

anyone ever hear that RSZ Aurbach said if your in middle of shmoneh esrai then you can continue till kadosh, thru nakdishach/nikadesh?

oy, what exactly is this case? I lost you. If you’re in middle of shemone esrei, what happened after that?

chazzan starts chazaras shats and kedusha comes, can you continue till kadosh kadosh or u must stop before then

oy, now I understand. No I never heard of that before, sorry. I did hear that if you know that you won’t hear the chazzan, (like you’re in a big place and you won’t hear the chazzan say kadosh kadosh etc.) then you can just continue davening.

cool. dont remember it exactly. another thing, personally i like it but why can they sing by kedusha? dont people need to hear the chazzan, sy if your saying it yourself and sy if in middle o shmona esrei?

The things you need to hear are the divrei shebikdusha-Kaddosh until Kevodo, Baruch Kevod until Mimkomo and Yimloch. After that (Mimkomcha, Mimkomo, etc.) you can sing

    #1016459

so then i can talk and continue davening?

I’m a female and I think we learned that it’s a thing that everyone does because you have to wait three seconds. One person started and everyone slowly followed over time but really you shouldn’t do it.

Idk that’s just what our Rabbi said.

He also said that he is not sure why people put the siddurim to their face. You can’t see the words that way!

I think the girls bury their head in the siddur cause they think it helps them concentrate, but when it comes to rosh hashana, how do they know shemona esrei of yamim noraim by heart?!

I also once saw a girl completely bent over at the waist for vidui…

I once saw a girl davening like it was Yom Kippur during a Chuppah.

    I’m not sure why

Ever notice on the pages in the siddur where Shema Koleinu can be found, there are always darker(dirt) marks in the middle of the binding. Ya got to take care of those oily noses.

The day of the chasana is a personal Yom Kippur for the chosson and kalla.

If you are talking about one of the guests rather than the kalla herself, that is also an inyan as the chuppa is supposed to be an eis ratzon.

Either way, davening is generally a good thing and you shouldn’t make fun of people who do it (unless of course they are doing it in a way that is disturbing others or at a time when they shouldn’t be for whatever reason). Better to daven during the chuppa then sit around speaking lashon hara.

YAY, I found out why we jump. It’s cuz if you daven at shul, then prolly the chazzan will be by kedusha, in which case you’re going up and down for that. Makes sense?

    #1016471

TAOM- not at all. What about the people who finish shemone esrai at the normal time without going overboard.

Answer: its a lo plug, since it’s a miut hamatzui.
