Baruch Hashem My son is looking forward for yeshiva gedolah but unfortunately He’s having dilemas with his rebbeim since He wants to move on and the rebbeim want him to stay there as they are telling him you will truly grow here.He wants to go to a top yeshiva gedolah. He’s currently in Yeshivat Torah Vodaath and bli ayin hora He is a tremendous masmid and knows around 1rd of Shas. He wants a very hard shiur so as to grow as much as he can. I’m thinking of maybe putting him a yeshiva in Brooklyn for a year and after sending him out of town. Any ideas for a good yeshiva with the shtarkest bochurim in Brooklyn and friendly ruach?

October 21, 2013 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #981774LevAryehMemberknows around 1rd of Shas
Huh? Is that a number?
Also, I heard a great line from R’ Elya Ber Wachtfogel about bachurim who “finish Shas” but I won’t say it, in case your son has photographic memory.
October 21, 2013 9:36 pm at 9:36 pm #981775Binyamin2711ParticipantVery Interesting, but what was R’ Elya Ber thought about this. Baruch Hashem the rebbeim say He asks kashyas from all over the place and he should keep on going further.

October 22, 2013 2:14 am at 2:14 am #981780jbaldy22Memberbekious is definitely an underrated value in yeshivos. That’s what actually makes this story questionable – if he went to a real yeshiva no way he finished that much of shas.
October 22, 2013 3:13 am at 3:13 am #981781Binyamin2711ParticipantI was thinking of maybe Torah Temimah anyone know anything abt it.
October 22, 2013 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm #981782Binyamin2711Participantmy son is a true masmid and always tries to learn bekius on his free time.
October 22, 2013 6:16 pm at 6:16 pm #981783seeallsidesParticipantYou have a lot of people to ask in Torah Vadaath who know your son and will guide you properly –
October 22, 2013 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #981784LevAryehMemberI heard that he spoke at a bachur’s siyum on Shas, and he commented how nowadays when a bachur learns twenty blatt a zman second seder, he’s considered to have gone quickly. Ten blatt would be b’iyun, seven blatt is even more, five is even more, and a guy who did two blatt must be the best bachur in yeshiva! So a bachur who finished Shas…

He means it as a compliment! He is knocking the whole derech halimud (derech am haratzus) that sadly takes place today in most Yeshivos.
October 22, 2013 10:33 pm at 10:33 pm #981786Binyamin2711ParticipantThey said about rav Nosson tzvi how he used to go around the bais medrash and ask where your holding and he would tell them that you have to go further and that you are spending too long on a certain sugya. Rav Ovadia zatzal used to say about bochurim who learn 2 or 3 blatt from elul to pesach and said that u have pick up ground. And I’ll tell you a lot of times u don’t have to put fingers up and down to find pshat of gemara when its a mefurash gemara elsewhere. Bekius is a foundation for iyun.

October 23, 2013 2:07 am at 2:07 am #981789jbaldy22Memberthe maharal in nesiv hatorah is an interesting read on the subject he says it would be better if they had printed piskei harash on the side of the gemara instead of tosafos because then at least people would know some halacha.
October 23, 2013 6:52 pm at 6:52 pm #981790twistedParticipantJbaldy: in my mad rush through shas (first time daf yomi) I make a point at end of masechta to do kitzur piske tosafos, and selected rosh for “casual’ reading.
