I have 12 grader in Bais Yaakov Miami and I am looking into seminary for her next year, she wants not so much academic but more ashkafa and not so open minded, we were looking into Pninim but it seems that even though the seminar is the kind she wants the girs are to open minded, she wants not soo frum either but not open minded eaither, ny sugestions?
October 16, 2013 5:51 am at 5:51 am #985909TorahMomParticipantThis sounds very much like what we are looking for for our daughter. We are definitely looking for a very BY type seminary. We don’t want to have to worry that there are girls there who will be listening to non-Jewish music, have internet access, have problems with tznius, etc. At the same time, our daughter is not very academically inclined, so we are not looking to send her to a seminary where she will need to constantly be studying, preparing, etc. The learning should be more in the form of hashkafic discussions, practical lessons, and experiencing kedusha of Eretz Yisroel and the mesirus nefesh of those who live and learn there. I heard about a new seminary called Kesser Chaya that is in its 2nd year. Does anyone know anything about the seminary – the academics, varmkeit, etc., as well as the type of girls who go there?
October 16, 2013 12:11 pm at 12:11 pm #985910nannyMemberHi!! I’m in Ateres now, and it sounds pretty good for what you’re looking for. It’s actually similar to Kesser Chaya in a way just more out of towny. Girls are very nice and frum and friendly! It’s very BY, girls don’t listen to non-Jewish music or have any internet access (I’m just out of sem now so I got access to a computer) and don’t worry about academics, we have 3 tracks and everyone finds their place!! And one thing i likes about them is that they don’t accept girls based on grades at all, they have one common denominater in ALL the girls here: we are all looking to grow (WITHOUT exception) and tznius is not a problem here!! to me it sounds like that’s what you’re looking for! I’d be glad to help with any more questions 🙂
October 16, 2013 1:46 pm at 1:46 pm #985911live rightMembertorahmom: everyone struggles with tznius, but on a different level. and by the way, people who struggle, grow. that’s what life is about. people can struggle with tznius and be extremely growth oriented people. so don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

November 7, 2013 7:35 am at 7:35 am #985913TorahMomParticipantlive right – I was not trying to put down those who struggle with tznius. It’s just that teenage girls are subject to a lot of peer pressure regarding how they dress, and I want to make sure that the seviva my daughter will be in for 10 months is one where the peer pressure will be towards dressing on a higher level of tznius, not one where she will be made to feel like the “frummy” (which should really be a source of pride, but usually isn’t to teenage girls) for wearing “duty length” skirts and such.
November 7, 2013 11:48 am at 11:48 am #985914interjectionParticipantIn every seminary the girls there are working on their tznius however is every seminary you will find girls who are just there for the Israel experience and want to come home the same. In every seminary there will be girls who listen to non jewish music but in the more right wing places they will be more tznius about it. Your daughter will find her group of friends based on what she is looking for, not what you are looking for but that goes for wherever she is. The good news is that most girls who go to seminary come home in a better place from how they were when they left.

December 21, 2018 7:28 am at 7:28 am #1648986RedlegParticipantI have mixed feelings about the whole post-HS Seminary-in-Israel meme. First, full disclosure. I have, so far, sent three daughters and one grand daughter to Seminary in Israel with rather mixed results. My two oldest daughters had negative experiences in Sem, one of which actually closed down in mid year. My youngest daughter and my grand daughter, on the other hand, had wonderful experiences and both grew in Torah knowledge, yiras shamayim, and maturity. As well as getting college credits for their continued education if the so desired.
It seems to me that if your daughter is, as you describe here , neither academically inclined nor particularly open to new experiences, I wonder why you’re willing to spend $30-40K on a program from which your daughter’s net gain will be small. There are fine seminaries here in the U.S. that would be better suited to her needs and desires and that cost two thirds less. The seminary in Cleveland (forgot the name) would be a good fit hashkafically as well as giving her a bit of the out-of-town experience.December 22, 2018 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm #1649199WinnieThePoohParticipantConsidering that more than 5 years have passed sine the OP asked about seminaries, it is probably a bit late to give her advice on whether and where to send her daughter to sem.
Adisrael re-opened this thread with a specific question, she probably would have been better off starting a new thread so the responses wouldn’t be wasted on outdated questions. -
