October 8, 2013 1:17 pm at 1:17 pm #1094096Veltz MeshugenerMemberThere’s an app for that.
October 8, 2013 1:31 pm at 1:31 pm #1094097LevAryehMemberI just bought my seven-year-old kid a gun. Is there any way to make sure he doesn’t put bullets in it? Serious question.
October 8, 2013 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #1094098Veltz MeshugenerMemberWhy not just jump straight to the Holocaust, Lev Aryeh Boy?

October 8, 2013 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm #1094100Yserbius123ParticipantThere are many solutions, most of them fairly simple. The easiest is just to not give them the password. Your WiFi should have a password, make sure that the computer can connect with the password but not the WiFi. To set or change the password, you have to go into the routers settings.
- Step 1
- Windows: Click on the “Start” circle menu doohickey, click on the text area right above it and type in “cmd”. This should bring up an item on the menu called “cmd.exe”. Click on it. A small black window comes up. Type into it the word “ipconfig”. A whole lotta text should stream by. Look for the words “Default Gateway” and the number next to it (it should look something like “192.168.0.1”). Get the thing listed as “MAC Address”. Go to the next step
- Mac: From the Apple menu, select System Preferences. From the View menu in System Preferences, select Network. Click on “WiFi”. Click on “Advanced”. Click on “TCP/IP”. Get the numbers listed as “Router” and the thing listed as “MAC Address”.
- Step 2: Type that number into your webbrowser like it’s a regular website. This should bring up the WiFi configuration menu. Look for an option called “WPA” or “WEP” Password. From there you can change it so that you need to type in a password to get on to the WiFi.
- Step 3 (optional): On your router settings screen there should be an option for “MAC address filtering”. Turn it on. Type in the MAC address that you got from Step 1. This makes sure that only your computer can connect to this WiFi.
October 8, 2013 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #1094101LevAryehMemberVeltz Meshugener – I just bought by seven-year-old son a holocaust. How do I prevent him from getting a Hitler?
Yserbius123 – And then just do the same thing for every other wifi network on the planet.
October 8, 2013 7:29 pm at 7:29 pm #1094102Todros GimpelParticipantThe surest way to do this is to uninstall the wireless adapters drivers.
Which operating system does the tablet run – is it an iPad, Android, or Windows based system?
October 8, 2013 7:29 pm at 7:29 pm #1094103Shopping613 🌠ParticipantYou need to put a password on the tablet so that it is unaccesible without a passowrd. Its called PARENTAL CONTROLS genuises.
The Goq- you crack me up!
October 8, 2013 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #1094104Todros GimpelParticipantThinking about, I have a similar problem.
I bought my son a Hydrogen bomb and I’m not sure how put password protection on the “Explode” button.
October 8, 2013 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #1094105streekgeekParticipantAlso remember that if you have a computer or tablet “remembering” the password to a Wi-Fi network, anyone on that device can retrieve it even it it’s temporarily disconnected from that specific network.
October 8, 2013 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #1094106Yserbius123ParticipantLevAryehBoy: Most WiFi networks are password protected. Unless Yeshuruns kids are walking around town looking for free WiFi, the tablet stays in the house so it can only connect to the house network. Or not, as the case may be.
Yeshurun: To permanently disable the WiFi on the tablet there is no solution. It’s possible, but it requires a decent level of computer expertise. You will need to gain root access and uninstall the network drivers, a tricky task that may or may not permanently break the tablet.
October 8, 2013 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #1094107🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantYserbius123- You’d be surprised at how easy some wi-fi passwords are to crack. Uninstalling drivers may work, but they can also be reinstalled. The most permanent is taking it in to remove the wi-fi radio. This works, but it does void the warrantee .
October 8, 2013 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm #1094108fkellyMemberYou can find free wifi in lots of places. Stores, malls, coach buses, peoples houses…
October 9, 2013 12:33 am at 12:33 am #1094109writersoulParticipantI really don’t get the whole “I just bought my kid a grenade, how do I make sure the pin doesn’t fall out” jokes. From a DANGER perspective (unless you’re talking of the danger of a Candy Crush addiction), the internet would be the dangerous part, no? There’s nothing inherently wrong with a tablet. If the kid’s just going to be playing Fruit Ninja, listening to music, etc., which is obviously the OP’s point as he/she wants to GET RID OF THE INTERNET BICHLAL, what’s your problem with the fact that it’s specifically on a tablet?
October 9, 2013 2:19 am at 2:19 am #1094110fkellyMemberWell said writersoul!
October 9, 2013 9:03 am at 9:03 am #1094111YeshurunMemberI thought that i’ve came to a serious place to ask a critic question, i did not expected that it will be a joke. It is not too smart to lough on other peoples issue, espatialy when you don’t know them & not familiar with the situation they are in. I’m sure that if we where meeting face to face, you were’nt talking that way.
Thanks to *Yerbius123 but the problem is other routers around.
What is the way to get root access and uninstall the network drivers?
October 9, 2013 11:50 am at 11:50 am #1094112ED IT ORParticipantYerbius123 – your solution of root is pointless as once you have flashed a recovery it is all bootable of external links.
OP: Yeshurun: is the tablet usb otg or usb host supporting? issue being you can plug a further usb wifi adaptor or even a 3g modem in…
best thing is to install a program like covenant eyes or web chaver or k9…. that way child has filtered monitered acvcess and is not tempted to bypass… (app lock too to prevent installation of others etc..)
October 9, 2013 12:10 pm at 12:10 pm #1094113Shopping613 🌠ParticipantYesurbius123, sometimes the neighbors have free WiFi that can be accesible from the house 🙂
What type of tablet is it? Look on the instruction manual, or setting and look for parental controls, or root it…google how to root _________(name of tablet)
And next time, research before you buy so you know if it has oarental controls and WiFi blocking or not
October 9, 2013 12:18 pm at 12:18 pm #1094114LevAryehMemberwritersoul – There would be absolutely nothing dangerous about a gun which is completely incapable of firing bullets.
The purpose of the comments was to point out that it is nearly impossible to completely prevent a child from gaining access to the Internet on a tablet. Where there’s a will there’s a way.
Maybe try to understand people’s comments before you pounce on them because they don’t fit with your world views.
October 9, 2013 12:23 pm at 12:23 pm #1094115LevAryehMemberFor example – anyone who suggests that all browsers be uninstalled and app installation access password-protected, here’s a fun fact: All Google (among many other) apps have built-in browsers. That means that Google Voice, Google Earth, etc. can all get full access. Sometimes the access is as obscure as clicking a link buried deep in the EU agreement or license information. You would never know this in a million years, because you have no desire to find it.
October 9, 2013 2:27 pm at 2:27 pm #1094116Yserbius123ParticipantYeshurun: I would NOT RECOMMEND you to attempt to root the device yourself. It can permanently damage the tablet. Best thing to do is to find someone who knows computers and mobile devices and ask them to do it for you.
crazybrit: It’s not so simple to flash a recovery. It seems that the computer is closely guarded, so downloading a recovery image and transferring it to the tablet would be difficult. Doing it without the parents noticing is impossible. Besides, diddling with the hardware would probably lead to some really bad results, considering how closely connected all the different components are in a standard tablet.
October 10, 2013 11:00 am at 11:00 am #1094119ED IT ORParticipantyserbius12345,
rooting a device using a simple program on a computer takes less than 3 minutes start too finish including doing rersearch on the matter.
flashing a recovery is nearly the same as installing an app and can be done from programs on the app store….
quote: “downloading a recovery image and transferring it to the tablet would be difficult. Doing it without the parents noticing is impossible. Besides, diddling with the hardware would probably lead to some really bad results”
transfering a recovery to the device consits of inserting an sd with the recovery on
doing it without parents noticing? seriously? lets have a vote from all parents out there and it being impossible that is definitely wrong.
diddling with the hardware? what you on about exactly we talking rom, recovery etc not hardware
IM NOT JUST BEING MY USUAL ARGUMENTATIVE SELF, BUT UNLESS YOU TRUST YOUR CHILDREN…
October 10, 2013 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm #1094120Yserbius123Participantcrazybrit: iPhones require a bit more hacking than just downloading a program. And even rooting Androids can permanently disable it if you don’t know what you’re doing. As for flashing a recovery image without the parents noticing, I’m pretty sure that the parents would notice if suddenly their phone isn’t rooted any more.
October 10, 2013 4:01 pm at 4:01 pm #1094121jbaldy22MemberI have rooted and installed custom recovery on many devices – it is not at all difficult and there are step by step instructions for everything. In the old days of android things were more difficult. Now a 7 year old could probably do it.
@crazybrit if the kid knows how to boot into ubuntu than covenant eyes/ web chaver is useless (which can be done on many tablets/ phones).
October 10, 2013 4:48 pm at 4:48 pm #1094122ED IT ORParticipantJbaldy22:
all very well it is possible to boot into ubuntu and the likes however that would require downloading and making a bootable device.. thus requiring being online first, if they have access to the internet they can install apps simply by going to play. google. com and signing in you can than remotely install apps or if they just download the apk’s.

hacking an iphone until ios 7 at least consists of plugging it into your pc going to the relevant website, paying the small fee and clicking the jailbreak button…
once on ios7 i believe there are some new parental control restrictions (i havent seen or tested that out yet)
basically back to the point if you dont trust your kids you gotta problem
October 10, 2013 6:12 pm at 6:12 pm #1094123jbaldy22Membermaking a bootable disk doesnt require internet – assuming chavra chavra is lei here.
October 11, 2013 12:15 am at 12:15 am #1094124writersoulParticipantLAB, I’m not pouncing on anybody here. I seriously did not get what you were trying to say (nothing people say is ever as obvious to other people as the sayer thinks it is- I can see in retrospect both why you’d think it’s obvious and why I didn’t get it).
Either way, that was not pouncing- that was polite perplexity, or at least it was intended to be. I was sincerely asking a question- I know people who say “tablet=assur” and I want to know why.
This has nothing to do with my worldviews except that it’s a new piece of knowledge that I want(ed) to gain and did not know previously. I can only react to things in the context I live in currently. My worldviews are ever-expanding and dynamic and I try to adapt as I learn new things. The sole reason I asked.
I’m not sure why I specifically got so defensive or verbose here of all places in explaining myself but I feel like as this is something I encounter a lot, I’d better set the record straight.
October 13, 2013 8:53 am at 8:53 am #1094125RisingSun613MemberI understand that saying no to your children can sometimes be very hard. but if you don’t want your children to go on the internet then you must take the tablet away no matter how hard it is.
if s/he is using the tablet just to play games then you can just get some other game-boy or something similar that does not have internet access (and are much cheaper btw).
if your child needs to use some other program on the tablet then im sure you can find some other device or service that can help you in the same way that does not have internet. -it might be hard to find at first but its out there.
October 13, 2013 8:54 am at 8:54 am #1094126RisingSun613Memberits not worth the risk to keep the tablet
October 13, 2013 1:04 pm at 1:04 pm #1094127bklynmomParticipantA child’s access to WIFI is a dangerous action, do everything you can to disable through password, filters etc., in addition a foundation of education, knowledge is a necessity for the youth.
If the device is for viewing children’s videos, playing games etc, you can buy a device that has NO WIFI capacity.
Don’t expect sincere & well-thought out answers on this chat thread, majority of responders are looking for a laugh or to show their ‘kannuos’ attitude. With success,
October 13, 2013 1:41 pm at 1:41 pm #1094128Shopping613 🌠ParticipantAt this point, there is no such thing as a kosher tablet or one that cannot get WiFi
Bklnmom, sorry
October 13, 2013 1:52 pm at 1:52 pm #1094129GG yekkeMemberif its a iPad go to settings and press on ‘Restrictions’ and make a password.
i am not sure if you can block wifi but you can block ‘safari’ – the internet app.
you can also block anything including the camera (camera was just a random example)
to unblock it all you need to do is go back to settings and press on restrictions, type in the password and click on whatever you want to restrict
Someone ‘donated’ money to my school to buy 30 iPads and they are all restricted like that.
the only way to get around it is if you know the password (btw – i know the password to the ipads in school even after they have changed it countless times…)
October 13, 2013 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm #1094130GG yekkeMemberas far as i know there is no real way to restrict ipods/ipads properly, unless you block the appstore as well; otherwise you can just download the FREE google app
October 13, 2013 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #1094131lebidik yankelParticipantIf its an android then use applock – its free and you choose which apps to block (browser, email etc.)
October 14, 2013 6:32 am at 6:32 am #1094132This name is already takenParticipantFor those who are saying that you cant restrict apple products, ever since ios 7 came out you can restrict websites from all browsers from the restrictions settings, howeverif you dont block the app store also then anyone can easily download the app for: youtube ,facebook, etc. and access it
Yeshurun you still didnt tell us what kind of tablet.

take the tablet and lock it away physically than throw away the key.
for partial solutions speak to your local tag.
October 14, 2013 1:32 pm at 1:32 pm #1094134RedlegParticipantThe only sure way to eliminate the WIFI capability on any device is to remove the 802.11 transceiver. On some earlier laptops this was relatively easy. On a tablet, although possible, it’s very difficult and requires real expertise. There is also a pretty good possibility that the tablet will get trashed in the process. If you are that makpid about your kids not having WIFI access on their tablets, why get them tablets at all? If all they want to do is play games, they can do it on you home computer (if you have one) or a dedicated game machine under parental supervision. I can’t think of a good reason for the kids to have mobile game playing capability. Where are they going to use it, in school?
October 14, 2013 4:42 pm at 4:42 pm #1094135jbaldy22Memberif the tablet supports usb otg than your solution will not help (and many these days do).
October 14, 2013 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #1094136jewishfeminist02Member“I just bought my seven-year-old kid a gun. Is there any way to make sure he doesn’t put bullets in it? Serious question.”
A gun has no usefulness other than to shoot. A tablet, on the other hand, has many uses that do not require Internet. I once babysat a child with special needs who was learning math and reading skills from a LeapPad because that was the method that worked best for him. His mother showed me how to use it so I could go through the exercises with him.
January 15, 2014 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #1094137yitdisMemberFor all those that are interested, get in touch with your local “outnet” representative, who will be happy to remove the WiFi from your tablet. I happen to be one of the volunteers, and have personally done many. We don’t charge for the service… it is leshaim shomayim. The number in eretz yisroel is 0722613613.
July 29, 2015 10:19 pm at 10:19 pm #1094138Theresa819MemberYou can easily turn off wifi to any devices with this appiom box I have. I’m part of the beta. Works pretty well so far. At least in the home.
July 29, 2015 11:41 pm at 11:41 pm #1094139frumnotyeshivishParticipantCrazy Brit- you are being a little extreme. To complete your thought: Physically locking it won’t work because there are safecrackers. And even if you put it in an uncrackable safe, the neighbors’ safes are crackable. Finally, stores sell unlocked tablets for $100. If your kid can’t figure out how to steal $100, he’s an idiot.
Bottom line: some safeguards are often necessary. Panic and extremes are pointless and often arouse rebellious feelings in children.
July 29, 2015 11:51 pm at 11:51 pm #1094140pcozMemberYou can break the routing table on the tablet so it won’t know where to send packets to.
July 29, 2015 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #1094141frumnotyeshivishParticipantReading an elementary school application recently. Soon (likely next year) they will require not living within 5 miles (biking distance) of a store that sells tablets or an unlocked network.
At some point, someone, somewhere, is going to have to deal with the fact that the internet is here to stay and becoming more and more accessible each year.
July 30, 2015 12:38 am at 12:38 am #1094142☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantFrumnotyeshivish, I disagree. I think you are the one being extreme.
It is true that if someone is motivated enough, they can get whatever access they want, and proper chinuch is always necessary, so that there’s motivation to avoid issur.
But, there’s a yetzer hora, and I think (certainly hope) you would agree that giving a kid unfiltered access is a bad idea.
So, crazybrit wants to draw the line earlier, and thinks a kid shouldn’t have a device which can be fiddled with to get access. That’s a very reasonable place to draw the line, and although you may choose to draw the line elsewhere, calling that panic and extreme is wrong.
July 30, 2015 1:29 am at 1:29 am #1094143pcozMemberActually on Windows you can just uninstall TCP/IP (4 and 6) and restrict privileges required to reinstall. That will kill everything.
July 30, 2015 3:03 am at 3:03 am #1094144princess leebaMemberI do not know how to block internet because im in college and my parents dont put a filter on my computer otherwise i would tell you how to. Its VERY important for you to put filters on your childrens computers. I cant tell my mom its wrong not to have a filter on my computer because thats not kivud av vam otherwise i would.
frumnotyeshivish – I am also somewhere enventween frum and yeshivish and yes we SHOULD have filters on our computers. Just because the goyim have computers without filters and do not watch what they are doing does not mean we as Jews shouldnt.
July 30, 2015 4:00 am at 4:00 am #1094145👑RebYidd23ParticipantIf something is very important one is even permitted to politely ask one’s mother for it in certain cases.
