i am in full agreement with you! its so sad when you see these things…. its royal children trying to dress in tatters and rags! it hurts me to see it time and again, especially when i see my students act different when in the presence of non-jews. i have to hold my tongue from telling them “girls do you realize you are finding the brass shinier than gold.”(i know i need to let them be at times, i save my mussar for times that they are receptive to it…)
October 8, 2013 1:10 am at 1:10 am #995937popupMemberThey love it, laugh behind our backs (huh? why do u practice ur religion if u make fun of urself)
I know, b/c I’ve been one those ppl that gets questioned about how modest or extreme Jewish groups appear to be and asked I try my best to keep the weelll e/o has extremist groups but don’t make urself sound like a Jew-Hater!!
It’s like if ur brother was insulted u’d stick up for him
October 8, 2013 1:16 am at 1:16 am #995938sm29ParticipantIt also breaks my heart. We are a very special family of Yidden.
Worse than antisemitism is fighting each other. At least when others are against us, we have each other and are strong.
It’s also sad when people don’t recognize how special it is to be part of this family. The outside world looks so tempting. But we have something deeper than that. A Divine mission and purpose that connects us to Hashem while bringing light to the world through Torah and Mitzvos. Obviously, we Jews sometimes mess up, and we need to improve our selves. But we can stand back up and go forward. We need to stand together in order to be strong. Like family, we can disagree but still love each other.

An extremely diverse group with members in every level of society, still we manage to work together. There are so many types of Jews, that it’s nearly impossible to classify us. Yet, we still walk under the same banner. We are Jews, and it’s time to be proud of it!
October 8, 2013 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #995940live rightMemberwhat gets me mad as when every sect of jew feels the need to put down those who are more religious and jump on every little detail that could possibly be misconstrued as close-mindedness, elitism….
everyone feels threatened by those who are doing more than them. but it doesn’t have to be taken out in such an immature way.

There are groups within Orthodox or ultra Orthodox Judaism that are elitist and think they are better than everyone else and above the rules. I have been called goy (even though im clearly frum and wear a yarmulka and dress normally) on more than one occasion by these peoples ignorant children who were brainwashed to believe that anyone who doesnt dress exactly like them is not Jewish. I wont go on with my rant but there are groups within us who are exclusive and look down on everyone else.
October 8, 2013 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm #995942streekgeekParticipantI heard this from a teacher I was close with in high school: The word FRUM is the perfect word to describe anyone who thinks s/he is such. FRUM has U in the middle. Anyone above U is Fanatically Religious and anyone below you is Modern.

October 9, 2013 1:14 am at 1:14 am #995944popupMembervery clever!
I think we all agree on this, just some ppl prob. have bad experiences (and im not judging them either) but they seem to give us a negative rep. it just hurts to see it happen can think of another example where a blatantly anti semitic pro Nazi slogan was encouraged by an outwardly Chasidic guy…it’s embarrassing!
October 9, 2013 2:38 am at 2:38 am #995945SanityIsOverratedParticipantGuess what people, elitists are everywhere; religious observance not withstanding. It’s a Jewish trait. It’s part of our genetics. Every Jew has an opinion, and every Jew is convinced HE is right.
I have personally seen it in so many communities of many different religious beliefs and observances. What we need is some Jewish pride, and that includes the diversity that goes along with being Jewish. There isn’t one right way to live, we got 600,000 ways. Everyone has a different mission, with different Nisyonos. Stop judging, and focus on your own issues. Recently I’ve been working on pointing out the good factors from any individual/group that I disagree with. Sometimes just in general, pointing out the good in people who’s values are different then mine, and knowing I can’t judge them because they’re nisayonos and purpose is different then mine.
October 9, 2013 12:12 pm at 12:12 pm #995946LevAryehMemberstreetgeek – Very similar to George Carlin’s famous line: “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”

Couldn’t have said it better.
December 27, 2013 1:57 pm at 1:57 pm #995948Bookworm120Participant@live right – Yes. And the bashing goes both ways. People feel they need to bash those who do not *seem* as “frum” as they *seem.* Don’t they get it? Not everyone is capable of the things you are, and some people are even more capable. Don’t begrudge them that. I bet they are genuinely trying as hard as they can to (excuse the pun) live right. 🙂
@streekgeek, regarding F.R.U.M. – So true, unfortunately.
@Sanity – Yes! I’m proud to be Jewish, and I don’t like trying to blend into a crowd unless I’m being followed by someone.
