Since the burka is in the news alot lately, I would like to make the following statement:
The burka was given to Moshe at Sinai. If you don’t believe this, you are a kofer.
The minhag was forgotten for many generations, due to the negative influences from Western culture.
However, thanks to yechidim like HaAdmor HaRav Helbrantz from Montreal, this Halacha L’Moshe MiSinai for women to wear the burka is now being reinstated. All those who do not accept are clearly kofrim.
(As heard from a member of the Lev Tahor community.)
September 16, 2013 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm #975406akupermaParticipantThe only reason it is prohibited to wear a “burka” is that it is imitating the goyim (similar to a nun’s habit, which is quite modest, but likewise prohibited). In that respect, wearing a burka is similar to have a tree for the holiday that occurs in late December, or engaging in “trick or treating” for the holiday that occurs in late October, or engaging in celebrations (drunken or somber) in honor of a possibly unhistorical someone the Irish honor in March.
It also might bed prohibited as being something “hadash” in light of a general rule on creating something new.

September 16, 2013 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #975408Yungerman from LakewoodMemberI don’t understand, akuperma.
If the burka is Halach L’Moshe MiSinai, how could it be considered “hadash” or “imitating the goyim”. It is Torah itself!!
And if you don’t agree that the burka is Halacha L’Moshe MiSinai, clearly you are a kofer, as expounded upon by HaAdmor HaRav Helbrantz Shlita.

September 16, 2013 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #975409apushatayidParticipantnot sure about burkas, but the knish, surely is halacha limoshe misinai.
September 16, 2013 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm #975410Burnt SteakParticipantWhat is the point of this thread? Sounds trollish
September 16, 2013 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm #975411WIYMemberIts been a while since ive had a potato burka lol.
September 16, 2013 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #975413econjewMemberIf you have to choose between keeping halacha and not blending into the gentiles, then keep halacha. The fact that the ???? is virtually gone from the Jewish community is a bit saddening. We invented the hijab!
September 16, 2013 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #975414truthsharerMemberYFL, you are correct, IF you are a member of that cult, then indeed you should follow the cult leader. Howver, for Jews, a Burqa is assur.
(This reminds me that I need to get some pizza puffs tonight.)
September 16, 2013 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #975415writersoulParticipantJudging by a lot of preschool parsha sheets, the streimel is apparently halacha leMoshe (literally) miSinai.
September 16, 2013 9:37 pm at 9:37 pm #975416golferParticipantwritersoul, those parsha sheets are a hoot!
Forget the shtreimels, please don’t tell me you didn’t get the one where eirev rav (clearly marked as eirev rav) are wearing the black hats / fedoras.
As for me personally, spinach.
September 16, 2013 11:26 pm at 11:26 pm #975418live rightMemberthe jewish men were definitely not wearing shtreimels at Har Sinai. they were in the DESERT for heaven’s sake!
September 17, 2013 12:01 am at 12:01 am #975419TorahUmadda-731-MelechYavanHarashaParticipantAnd the medrash says Moshe only saw Hashems tefillin. It does not say he saw His Tzitzis. So presumably we can infer that Hashem didn’t Wear, Kaveyachol, His Tzitzis out.
September 17, 2013 12:17 am at 12:17 am #975420Sam2ParticipantTU731: That is a horrible Ra’ayah for several reasons. I really hope your post was a joke.
September 17, 2013 12:18 am at 12:18 am #975421Anonymous1000ParticipantAll of 4 ladies wear burkas wow big news. How many do you see on a regular basis? How many do you have anything to do with? How about instead of wasting time thinking about some other communities problems we focus on our own. In the community I live if there is any tznius problem it is not burkas.
Maybe people believe sheitels down to the waist is Torah misinai after all sarah emainu must of had at least 3.
September 17, 2013 2:11 am at 2:11 am #975422live rightMembersara imeinu didn’t leave her tent and wud therefore have no need for shaitels. she wore pre-tieds

September 17, 2013 3:02 am at 3:02 am #975424SanityIsOverratedParticipantLive Right- How did Sara Imeinu travel then?!!
September 17, 2013 3:39 am at 3:39 am #975425sharpMemberI don’t think any of us would know what Sara Imeinu wore. Really, now?
Anyhow, I think today’s burka wearers are trolls.
September 17, 2013 4:26 am at 4:26 am #975426yeshivaguy45Participantikno, i understand the line. You’re basing it on the Gemara.
September 17, 2013 5:01 am at 5:01 am #975427Shopping613 🌠ParticipantI agree that it looks like its from the goyim, but according to them, we jews had the idea first and as usual the goyim are being copy cats. but I saw alot of articles on it, its not a cult, there is no leader, these people just think that is the way women are meant to dress, thats how they are interperting it, they feel more comfortable that way, and who knows????
MAYBE THEY ARE RIGHT???!?!?!?!? If they are, how many aveiros have we “normal” women done???!?! By not wearing what we shoulld?!?!?
WOULD WE GO TO GEHENOM FOR CONSTANTLY NOT BEING TZINYUS IF THEY ARE RIGHT?????
September 17, 2013 12:40 pm at 12:40 pm #975428notasheepMemberShopping, I can refer you to a good doctor, you seem to have a problem with your fingers on the punctuation keys.
September 17, 2013 2:57 pm at 2:57 pm #975429yeshivaguy45ParticipantShopping, I advise you and everyone else who thinks a burka should be worn to look at Gial Manolson’s book on Tznius, Outside Inside. Among other things, it explains why Jewish women don’t dress like muslims.
September 17, 2013 3:22 pm at 3:22 pm #975430akupermaParticipantNo one discovers a new halacha mi-Sinai in the 21st century.
We have 3000 years of mesoret, and know generally how people have dressed, and we have never worn such a garment – therefore we have a mesoret that it is “new”, and “chodash asur min haTorah.”
September 17, 2013 3:22 pm at 3:22 pm #975431yeshivaguy45ParticipantSorry that was a typo. I meant Gila Manolson
September 17, 2013 3:34 pm at 3:34 pm #975432SanityIsOverratedParticipantAlso, if you respect the opinion of Rabbis in general (obviously many of us end up getting annoyed with one Rabbi or another, but I’m referring to the general consensus of Rabbis), then you have nothing to fear. No Rabbi as of yet (that I know of) has been completely convinced of it being necessary. Some just agree that it’s ok for an individual to choose it. (from what I understood in the Mishpacha article)
I actually kinda like the burka. There’s something very spy-like about it. If I thought it was ok, I’d wear it just to feel like I’m up to something secretive. >.>
September 17, 2013 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm #975433zahavasdadParticipantIn Prague the building from before the war are still there as are the treasures. In the Chevra Kadisha building there is series of watercolors explaining a jewish funeral in pictures from the 1700’s.
The picture show people surrounding the death bed, Tahara, Burial, the mourning crying and the mourning sitting shiva. Basically what a burial looked like in the 18th century Prague.
NONE of the people in the watercolors are wearing strimels or Beckashers and many didnt even have beards
September 17, 2013 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #975434Shopping613 🌠ParticipantIm not taking sides, Im saying how you should look at the flip side sometimes.
I respect both opinions, and I will probobly never wear a burka cuz I dont fhink thats what Hashem wants from me, but others may feel that way, you shouldnt judge them.
September 17, 2013 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #975435nishtdayngesheftParticipantZD,
Fascinating observation.
However, I have never seen people wearing “strimels” or “Beckashers”(sic)at any of the funerals that I have unfortunately attended, even among the most chassidic.
Can you guess why? According to you that would be proof that Jews nowadays do not wear Shtreimlich or Bekeshes, yet that is clearly not the case.
So how do you explain that?
September 17, 2013 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #975436zahavasdadParticipantThese were not photos, they were watercolors and the artist just painted people as he saw them in general and the first watercolor was not of a funeral, but rather someone sick in bed (It was supposed to be his deathbed).
Artists dont always have models (These were not meant to be masterpieces) . I would have loved to have taken of picture of these watercolors as I was fascinated by them, but it wasnt allowed 🙁
Its amazing they have survived.
