Hi-
I understand that there us a Rabbi Ovadia Yosef approved motorized wheelchair that can be used on Yom Tov. Does anyone know how one can find this. The person requiring this lives in Monsey, NY.
Thanks

They come from Israel

August 13, 2013 2:30 pm at 2:30 pm #970563golferParticipantThis name i a t, you will first have to do some research to determine what exactly is the issur involved in operating an electronic device on Shabbos?
August 13, 2013 3:29 pm at 3:29 pm #970564Sam2ParticipantI would highly doubt that any mainstream Poskim allow using an electronic device on Shabbos (though the logic is definitely workable). Using an electronic wheelchair on Yom Tov, on the other hand, is much easier to be Meikel with. All you would need is for it to be constantly running at very low power on a battery and have pushing a button just increase (by orders of magnitude) the charge in the circuit.
August 13, 2013 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm #970565twistedParticipantThis name and gofer: Tzomet routinely uses gromo dgrromo and randomization (anti psik reisha devices) to rig all kinds of devices for shabbos, including scooters and wheelchairs. For a panoramic view of what is the issur of operating an electronic device, you could dig up an old sefer Toldos Meori Hoaish about the advent of electricity, and them make the jump to electronics.(and then the more modern Shu’t)
August 13, 2013 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #970566twistedParticipantAnd there is a shitta, that where you need lishma, battery powered equipment is less groma removed and more lishma than throwing the switch on the AC.
August 13, 2013 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #970567zahavasdadParticipantIt has to do with a gramma switch. Normally electricity is bulit with a circut and its the building of a circuit thats assur.
A gramma switch is already on and it has to do with changing the directions of the electrons so you are only indirectly affecting the electricity.
Truthfully anyone could really do this, but its been disallowed for healthy people, but the Poseks have allowed this for people who really need the wheelchairs or for elevators (The kind in a house where you sit) or in a shul to reach the other floors
