Post your questions here for the gastronomical experts in the coffee room.

I will start this is not really a cooking question but i need to know

The real ones are red. The ones you see in the store are just yellow onions with food coloring.

For the same reason we call people redheads even though they are merely orange.

And for the same reason we call people blockheads even though their heads aren’t made of blocks.

oneoutofthree- eggplants used to be small, white and egg-shaped. Just like carrots used to be purple.

    #1195372

In England, eggplants are called aubergines.

    #1195373

aha they used to be and that is why… but the ones we see today are as close to eggs as purple onions are to the color red or as baby salmon is to (ocean/wild) salmon

    #1195374

Aubergine is also widely accepted to be referred to when describing color…

“For the same reason we call people redheads even though they are merely orange. “

Because orange was not the name of a color until the fruit became popular. The color was named after it. Before that, the color we now call orange was considered a shade of red.

And why is wild salmon called wild, if it just sits there like a dead fish?

    #1195379

bec they used to be that is why 😉

    #1195380

The bigger ‘q’ is why baby salmon is called so, it’s just a trout that swims in colored water to give it that pinkish hue

It is interesting that even in Lashon Hakodesh, redheads are called Edomi which means red, and not orange

We called the cabbage purple, never red. And why do we park in the driveway and drive on a parkway?

Probably because peppers contain capsaicin that’s what makes chili peppers hot.

It’s unfair that zucchinis are zucchinis while yellow squash are just yellow squash.

Sometimes they are lumped in the category with zucchinis as summer squashes.

English needs to give them a unique name

    Lightbrite……….

Zucchini is just an Italian word that means little squash.

    Zucca means squash.

Zucca del estate means summer squash.

Here in the northeastern US with large Italian population, who were the predominant vegetable farmers and greengrocers the Italian name came into everyday use.

Omgosh that makes sense. It’s not even English. Wow. Yellow in Italian is “giallo.”

So a yellow squash would be Zuccagiallo.

And now I know why we just call it yellow squash!

Ha! I just saw my own posts above and busted a gut laughing. Don’t remember being so funny.

For really funny-named foods, you gotta come to Israel- seriously. Shugi pitzee anyone?
