Any old timers here recall the good ‘ole days when WVOS was a Jewish radio station and Art Raymond was the star?
June 27, 2013 2:05 am at 2:05 am #1118077The FrumguyParticipantI’m sure you mean WEVD.
June 27, 2013 2:27 am at 2:27 am #1118078shikronMemberAh, yes. Mods? Can you change title & OP to WEVD from wvos ?
June 27, 2013 2:38 am at 2:38 am #1118079HummingbirdParticipantWEVD covered the NYC area. WVOS I think covered the Catskill areas.
June 27, 2013 2:43 am at 2:43 am #1118080WolfmanParticipantWEVD was at 1050 AM which now is a Spanish language sports station. According to Wikipedia, WEVD was originally a socialist party radio station.
June 27, 2013 3:49 am at 3:49 am #1118081mazal77ParticipantArt Raymond and the Sunday Simcha!!
June 27, 2013 4:15 am at 4:15 am #1118082gefenParticipantYup- I certainly do remember WEVD and Art Raymond -Avraham Yitzchok (I think that’s what he used to say his name is)
Anyway I listened to it all the time. When I moved to Chicago, I really missed it.
I gather from the first post that it’s not around anymore.
Is Art Raymond still around? If so, does he still have a radio show?
June 27, 2013 1:06 pm at 1:06 pm #1118083shikronMemberYeah, WVOS popped in my head since that’s the station in the Catskills that for years has a limited frum programming schedule during the summer months.
EVD stands for the initials of that civil rights dude.
June 27, 2013 3:37 pm at 3:37 pm #1118084zahavasdadParticipantEVD stands for Eugene V Debs , he was a socialist. he ran for president in 1912 on an anti-war campaign and got 6% of the vote
June 27, 2013 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm #1118085rabbiofberlinParticipantDID some research- art raymond would be 91 today if he is alive. Methinks he passed away some years ago in florida.
June 27, 2013 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1118086RobertzMemberThank you I remember WEVD . In the later years the morning drive time was hosted by Bill AMAZIN Mazer who turned from sports to very conservative talk way before there was Savage or Hannity. WEVD was in stereo like most FM stations 97.9
June 27, 2013 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #1118087The FrumguyParticipantArt Raymond is very much still around. View him on You Tube (but don’t tell anyone that you did!)
June 27, 2013 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #1118088rabbiofberlinParticipantThe frumguy- just checked and yes, he was certainly still alive a year ago when you see his interview ! He does look every ounce of his age…(90)….bis 120!
June 28, 2013 5:12 am at 5:12 am #1118089Heard his voice on an advertisement on one of the Jewish stations of late. He really had a simchas hachayim and did a great job.
June 30, 2013 5:56 am at 5:56 am #1118092Biology (joseph)ParticipantWas Art Raymond a disc jockey like Nachum Segal?
June 30, 2013 2:47 pm at 2:47 pm #1118093The FrumguyParticipantArt Raymond was a non-frum, limited knowledge of Yiddishkeit, “disc jockey.” He many times got caught saying ridiculous things, quite often insulting the frum listeners’ sensitivities. When Zalman Umlas came along on WFMU (before Nachum Segal who pales in comparison), Jewish radio was highly amateurish. Zalman Umlas “professionalized” Jewish morning radio well beyond Art Raymond.
June 30, 2013 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm #1118094shikronMemberZalman Umlas? Never heard of that guy. Is he frum?
July 1, 2013 4:08 pm at 4:08 pm #1118095mewhoParticipantwow that name is a blast from the past.
July 1, 2013 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm #1118096RobertzMemberWEVD was a commercial radio statijon and Art was paid commissions on his accounts like “Cafe Baba” and “Saratoga Geiser Water”. The other guy was on a college listner supported frequency which seemingly was just a fun thing. That was than and this is now and this is that and I am me you are he and we are all together groovy
July 1, 2013 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm #1118097FloridianMemberJust to set the record straight, Art Raymond is alive and well and he Still has a radio show In Florida Saturday night for a few hrs. I’m not sure if it is out of Del Ray Beach or in that area . Boruch Mechaya Maysim
February 23, 2014 8:50 am at 8:50 am #1118098NieceMemberArt Raymond passed away on February 21, 2014, at the age of 91, in Boynton Beach, FL. He is survived by his beloved wife Bunny, sons Howard and Warren and their families.
February 23, 2014 1:19 pm at 1:19 pm #1118099hashtorani (joseph)MemberBaruch Dayan HaEmes.
Are you his niece?
February 24, 2014 2:37 am at 2:37 am #1118100gefenParticipantBaruch Dayan HaEmes. I loved his radio show. Grew up with it.
February 24, 2014 2:41 pm at 2:41 pm #1118101mewhoParticipantwow a little eerie that people here began a thread about him and he passed away shortly after. i guess he was in peoples minds.
February 24, 2014 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #1118102jewishfeminist02Member8 months is “shortly after”?
February 25, 2014 12:10 am at 12:10 am #1118103oomisParticipantMy parents O”H used to listen to him every day; I thought his show was “The Morning Simcha,” but I could be mistaken(hey…it’s been known to happen).
December 21, 2015 1:53 am at 1:53 am #1118106ShoytaParticipantI opened a you tube account with old recordings of his show. Too bad though, a lot of his narration, and his memorable advertisements were not recorded when we made these cassettes (for our enjoyment) back in the 80s.
December 21, 2015 2:56 am at 2:56 am #1118107Ex-CTLawyerParticipantI grew up listening to Art Raymond on WEVD….My Zaidy was an advertiser on the station and therefore it was kept on to monitor commercials. Before taking over the WHN 1050 spot, WEVD was on 1330 AM. My older brother remembers them on 1220 AM before that.
WEVD was known as the ‘station that speaks your language’ no matter what language you spoke. It was started by the Socialist Party in 1927. Later it was the radio station of the Forvertz. A good number of the WEVD radio personalities were from the 2nd Ave Yiddish theatre and are buried in MT Hebron Cemetery in Queens.

Shikron, Yes Zalman Umlas is Frum.
They started Broadcasting from the Upsala College Campus in East Orange, NJ, an Evangelical school.
Zalman handed the reins to Nachum, (not directly) & they later moved transmitters to the current one which has a MUCH stronger signal.
Both programs were ‘listener sponsored’.

December 24, 2015 1:27 pm at 1:27 pm #1118111blubluhParticipantI know I’m veering off topic, but the mention of Zalman Umlas reminded me of his father who I knew when I was in high school back in the 70s. Rabbi Umlas (I don’t think I ever heard his first name) and his wife ran the Sunday morning breakfast concession and I think they also doled out the Thursday night “mishmar” suppers, as well.
What I recall of him is that he was always a jovial man, but he didn’t put up with any guff from us wise guys.
Probably the most memorable for me were his very impressive basketball trick shots. His abilities on the court were all the more impressive considering that he was, shall we say, not in classic “athletic” shape. 🙂
