Doesnt it make you feel fake and like a fraud standing in front of a mirror every day and applying make up? A lot of people literally look different without makeup. Its not just a matter of covering up a few things, its changing their whole face and you would not recognize them without the makeup. Is this not fake? Its like going out with a mask on every day. No?

WIY- I only wear makeup to simchas, for shabbos I just put on a bit of pencil and mascara. No more than that. Makeup damages the skin which makes you have to wear it to cover the damage… Why get stuck in the loop?

No different than some boys who put on their black hat and jacket every morning. The more important question is, do these kids have good middos, or is it a costume?

It depends on how much you put on.

If you cake yourself like crazy, then yeah, it kinda fake.

But If u just put on lightly, then it just enhances the features you already have, and it makes it pretty.

Do I feel like a different person when I wear makeup? No. Just me in a little prettier and enhanced.

Makeup makes me feel pretty and gives me confidence. I put on a little bit for shabboss and Yom Tom and when I go to any sort of special event. It doesn’t make me feel fake at all.

I don’t wear makeup everyday. When I do, I apply very naturally. Moisturizer, Coverup, bronzer/blush, lip balm (chapstick), mascara, brownish pink eye shadow, and sometimes powder. I enhance, not alter.

Just saying, I’m in shidduchim now so I’ve been wearing makeup every day, BUT my older brother told me straight out that most girls don’t need makeup and that he actually finds makeup unattractive.

lol black lipstick? are you a juggalo?

here’s the real question: why does makeup help you look prettier (beyond covering visible flaws)? are dusky eyes, red cheeks, and earrings just something that we are conditioned to think is beautiful, or is there some evolutionary aspect to it?

Girls you are too funny! WIY didnt ask how much when n’ how you put on make up!

No need to chant on about how much blush you rub on your cheek when you go to a wedding vs day to day 😉

And to answer WIY – right some people tend to cover their faces with make up

But its like saying all italians eat pasta or all chassidim are violant…

Many woman look very nice and it bauetifys a women.

The women that dont have make up on are blamed that they embarrassing the frum community so they think all frummies are washed out.

Probably as a male you only notice the girls with heavy make up. And those with gentle.and classy seem to you like they dont have make up…

Hashem had make-up come down with the mann I learned. It is a mitzvah for a lady to look nice, especially for her husband. And as scrisis put it, a Jewish lady should not look ‘washed out.’

You know, the shevatim didn’t recognize Yosef because he had grown a beard. It changes their whole face. Doesn’t that make men feel fake and like a fraud wearing a mask standing in front of a mirror shaving? Answer honestly.

The Gemara talks about various types of make-up women wear. It’s a very normal, natural thing.

I don’t wear makeup very often (just occasionally on Shabbos and yom tov- and NEVER mascara- don’t get me started on mascara). Honestly, though, I don’t know anyone whom I wouldn’t recognize without makeup if I usually saw her with it. When I put on what little makeup I use, I don’t feel like I’m lying- I’m still me, and (unfortunately) I still look like me, but I maybe feel a little bit prettier. As people may remember from that cosmetic-surgery-for-shidduchim article thread, I’ve suffered from self-image issues, and for me, it’s more a matter of feeling good to me than looking good to others, though there are obviously elements of each in the other.

the fact that the gemara “talks about it” doesn’t make it natural (in the real sense of the word). normal, yes; natural, no.

Im sick and tired of your derogatory sarcastic attitude. Its an open Gemara in Yoma Daf 75. Spend less time here and doing things that enable you to pick up that cool slangy language you use and start dedicating yourself a little more in the beis medrash. Theres a lot you dont know.

I don’t feel fake at all, I feel professional, pretty, and like a princess, and I feel much happier when I put it on.

how interesting, indeed it is. you’ll have to pardon my incredulous reply; I had not seen the gemara, and i don’t believe it is quoted in any of the major rishonim on chumash. be that as it may, there is no excuse for ignorance. interesting to note that it is derived from the fact that they ground it up.

per your advice, I will refrain from posting for the next month, perhaps forever.

I have better things to do with my time than stand in front of a mirror putting on make-up. (Of course, I have better things to do with my time than waste it in the CR, but that’s for another thread.)

Brony, that isnt me, i said some of my friends, and it started after i moved, so B”H Im not around them anymore since all the teens in that city pretty much go half OTD…..

Anyway, they also put on PILES OF GLITTER – red, blue, hot pink…flashy colors, and all them together …….do you know how much it clashes?????

It makes them look ugly and fake…i hate make-up. I do put on lipbalm and moisterizer and thats it.

Im not trying to chase you away from here. My point was simply that if someone says they heard something in Torah don’t be so quick to dismiss it and attack it. First look into it and if you can really find no sources then you can express your doubts to the veracity of the comment in a respectful manner.

WIY, answer honestly: if your wife insisted that you either let her wear sweatshirts at her discretion, or a full face of make-up every day, which would you pick?

Too much makeup is uchyer than sweatshirts. I am ok with minor use of makeup. I hope she wont need more than that anyway. The ones who lay it on thick look like fake clowns in my opinion and is not pleasant to look at.

in direct response to your question: nope, it does not make me feel like a fraud. wearing makeup tastefully makes me feel wonderful–confident, beautiful, and feminine. all are qualities men such as yourself seem to seek in a spouse. wearing makeup does not mean someone doesn’t have natural beauty; all it means is that they know how to enhance and highlight that beauty to its best advantage.

Makeup has been part of women practically since time began. If not, the Jewish women would not have had such a zechus for using their mirrors to beautify themselves for their husbands. Unless I am mistaken, weren’t their mirrors used to make the Kior for the Beis Hamidash (I could be confusing this with something else)?

You are correct. Although the idea is that they wanted to bring Jewish children into the world.

Keep in mind during the Shoah, women purposely pricked themselves to draw blood and applied it to their lips and cheeks to look younger, more attractive and “useful” to the SS.

WIY- Im so glad you actually asked this! I feel alot of females especially frum ones have been putting way to much time into their looks, especially makeup. When i put on i always try to remeber one thing, make up isnt supposed to make you look beautful its to enhance what Hashem has already given you. If i would put aton on and people didnt recignize me of course i would feel like a fraud, but if i put just enough on to boost my self esteem a bit and present myself better then why not?
