Can someone please explain to me why the Yeshivos feel that the govt is obligated to fund them?
Also did the govt say that if you don’t want to be drafted we will stop funding the Yeshivos? Meaning is not taking funds an option to side step the draft?

2. No.

2. Considering the government uses taxpayer funding (including frum taxpayers) to pay for university students education, it is only equitable that they similarly fund Torah scholars education.

The government is saying if you dont go, you will not get government Benefits like Food Stamps
And yes the Charedi leadership could just take this road. Neteuri Karta and the Edah HaChadis do this

If they don’t give the yeshiovos money, the parties who want yeshivos won’t support them. As a result of the last election, the parties favoring support of the hareidi yeshiovos did poorly relative to the anti-hareidim, so the government will cut funding.
2. This is how a parliamentary system works. Each faction joins the government, and gets patronage and money for their favorite projects. It is very democratic and good politics, though from an economic efficiency perspective it stinks (in part because it guarantees high taxes).
3. Conscription is a separate issue. The government might end up saying that they will only fund veterans in yeshivos, but not non-veterans, which is their right. However passing a law that makes it illegal for at least some 18 year olds to learn Torah (requiring them to stop learning and join the army) is unacceptable to much of the frum community.
April 29, 2013 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #948794Avi KParticipantRambam says (Hilchot Melachim 4:10) that one of the functions of the central government is to raise Tora. Of course, if a yeshiva does not recognize the government it should not be funded – and it is hypocritical for it to take the money.
