Story in the tabs today Justin Bieber visits Anne Frank Museum and in the guestbook he writes that if Anne were alive today he hopes she would be a belieber (a term he uses to describe his fans). Dov Hikind was quoted in the Daily News saying it was extremely insensitive thing to do, Abraham Foxman weighed in saying he thinks it was harmless.

It is one thing to like his voice and some of his songs, but to be a beleiber is insane.

You don’t have to be smart to realize where he’ll be in a couple of years. Or for that matter, where he is.

I read about it as well, and I thought well of it. Anne Frank was “normal”, and the point was that any teen/preteen alive today could have been Anne Frank. All it takse is for a dictator to get into is head (or more accurately, for Hashem to put in his head) to wipe out a specific group, and there you go.

It does not make me a “belieber”?, but in general the guy has been pro-yidden & EY. IIRC he ignored some of the boycott calls when he performed (or will perform) in EY (sorry). Good for Yidden in my book.

What?- So you think Madonna, and all the others who include Israel on their tour is good for the jews? Maybe they are good n that they don’t incite the opposite/- They said the same thing about Elton John and many others- that despite the threats, they ‘persevere on’ an that they ‘should be lauded’. All they do is reinvigorate the carefreeness there. Elton John- and his ‘husband’. Ridiculous. ‘Good for the Jews’ – jump in the lake.

Quite a few musical artists boycott Israel and refuse to perform there because of the “occupation.” Bieber singing in Israel and having the guts to ignore those who distort the truth is actually a pretty big deal. Many famous musicians, from Pink Floyd to Elvis Costello have refused to play in Israel.

It certainly was an insensitive comment on his part, but definitely not out of character for someone of his mindset. He probably didn’t change anybody’s mind one way or the other, so on balance there’s no actual harm done. Those who learn Torah Lishma will remain committed to Hashem and Torah. Those who would be influenced to join some Christianity or some other non-Torah movement would likely have done so anyway. (Which is not meant to condone their choice, but just to state the fact of the matter.)

I don’t think he did anything wrong what he was kinda saying is, if she had lived in this day and age she would have been a normal teenage girl.

As an aside is Anne Frank’s diary studied in frum schools?

The Goq: It wasn’t in mine. I read it as an adult (ironically in a chareidi home in Israel) and understand why.

I think it’s harmless, if pretty strange and somewhat disturbing. As someone said above, Anne Frank was a perfectly ordinary girl, and for all we know would have been a “belieber’- but it’s still a really strange thing to say when you’re at the house.

I am not a Justin Bieber fan, never was, never will be. BUT – though what he wrote may have been foolish and in questionable taste, it is not worthy of the big gedillah that is being made over it. Had Anne Frank not lived in a country overrun by the Nazis Y”Sh and there had been such a teen idol who was world-famous then, or were she alive as a teen today, she would very likely be a huge fan of his, as are so many female teenybopper in the secular world, Jewish or not.

Anne Frank O”H was very much a typical teen until she was forced into hiding, and even then we can see within her diary the typical angst, thoughts, feelings, hates, and loves that many adolescent girls seem to go through. In that respect, Bieber was probably correct, though he would have been wiser to keep his self-promoting thoughts to himself at such a time and place.

I never heard of the term belieber before this thread. I think a more appropriate term would be beleaguered though. What an idiot, but who cares.

It was a well-intentioned but somewhat thoughtless remark — no big deal. This “controversy” seems media-generated.

The Israeli Chabad kabbalist Rabbi Yitzchak Ginsburgh recently wrote an essay on his website encouraging all Jews to read Frank’s autobiography (even charedim who probably wouldn’t normally read it.)
