I thought a new thread would make it easier to find.
Charliehall, this one reason I ended up studying a quantitative field. I would rather be pressured in theoretical issues than in moral issues. Maybe I feel this more intensely as a girl, since it is important for my happiness to get along with people around me as much as possible. In today’s academic world, I felt that it was impossible for me to do this and remain in my place of frumkeit in a non-quantitative or empirical field.
I’m sure some people can deal with it, but I have never met anyone who stayed as frum as they were in the beginning after a real graduate degree.
I find that among quantitative professors, there is even more subtle brainwashing. They give examples in terms that are meant to convince you of things and your brain doesn’t even know to reject it because “it’s just an example”.

STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields are more focused on skills and what you can do. So the pressure is reduced, even if it is still there.

You should have started a new thread to respond. It would’ve made it easier to find.
April 7, 2013 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm #943007popa_bar_abbaParticipantYeah, but I’m tayning that the subtlety of the brainwashing makes it more insidious and invidious and effective. (And affective).
Imagine, that the professor gives an example of a study of doctors and how efficient they are, and, instead of her saying that it was measured in how many appendectomies they can do, she says it was measured in how many abortions they can do. She is getting you used to the idea that abortions are normal without saying it, so your mind doesn’t even object.
See, I just even convinced you that the professor was a she. Even though most professor are a he. Or even though you have no idea if they are or aren’t. Which is accurate about me as well.
April 7, 2013 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm #943008Torah613TorahParticipantI hear.
Suppose all the abortions were to save the mother’s life.
It’s easy. Whatever gender you claim to be, or is used in your examples, I just go with the opposite for that thread. Being an anonymous person online and all, it really doesn’t matter what gender you choose to be.
DY: Feel free. 🙂
April 7, 2013 8:58 pm at 8:58 pm #943009writersoulParticipantPBA: If you’re in the regular world, abortions are normal, whether you agree with it or not.
It seems like what you’re talking about is more being out of a Jewish environment than being in an anti-Jewish brainwashing environment. To anyone else, abortion is normal. They’re not trying to convince you of everything because they think that you agree already.
Is that what you’re saying?
The alternative would just be to shut ourselves in our whole lives. Many do, but those decide to go to college/grad school therefore probably know what to expect.
April 7, 2013 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #943010yytzParticipantI’ve heard pro-life doctors say that in med school and later, they were mocked and derided for being against abortion.
April 7, 2013 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #943011interjectionParticipantOn the topic of abortions, many of those who are pro life believe that the baby’s right to life begins at the moment of conception and are extremely reluctant to concur that the mother’s life takes precedence, even in a situation that Halacha would say so.
April 7, 2013 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #943012BronyParticipantyeh i dropped out of MIT for dis reason. teachers were using metric instead of imperial to brainwash us into being like europe. i was a lone rebel fighting for the imperial cause.

That is good training for your brain! There is a paucity of logical thought in our society. Much of what we believe to be true just isn’t true. (And logical thought is no threat to Judaism as long as we are grounded in our ikkarim, which are not susceptible to either logical or empirical disproof. Of course, as I have mentioned in the previous thread, this is not for everyone — all should consult with their rav regarding educational programs.)

No, it isn’t what I’m saying. I am saying that professors deliberately say things like that in order to normalize them.
If you don’t like my abortion example, then pick one that suits you. Say it is a conservative professor using an example of a police force and describes its efficiency as how well it is able to catch abortion doctors and put them in prison.

If this is not a joke, you will be surprised to know that the metric system has been legal in the United States since the 1860s. All “Imperial” measures are now defined officially in terms of the metric system. For example, an inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters.

did i hear correctly that you are some kind of science instructor?
April 7, 2013 10:02 pm at 10:02 pm #943017BrooklinebornParticipantI think that all teachers do not refrain from giving opinion as fact. It is the best teacher who allows for students to have their belief without question. Education presents multiple sides of an argument. Such as with the aforementioned abortion. It is not normal but it is allowable by federal law. Abortion is considered through a thoughtful process between a woman and her doctor and whomever else she thinks to consult, her husband or religious leader. It is not normal just legal for now.
Many other religious believers have issue with the act of abortion, not the law…
Education stretches the mind, helps to see there are more than one option and if someone calls that brainwashing, then they are not getting different perspectives, just one RIGHT one.. The one of the person, institution or belief.
April 7, 2013 11:25 pm at 11:25 pm #943018Torah613TorahParticipantBrony, I was wondering the same thing.
April 8, 2013 12:43 am at 12:43 am #943019yytzParticipantInterjection: It’s true that the official position of the Catholic Church is that abortion is not allowed even to save the life of the mother. But most pro-lifers would be happy with a law that allowed abortion to save the life of the mother. Halachically, that could be OK only if they ensure that the decision whether the mother’s life is in danger is made on the same criteria that a rabbi would use in deciding whether to OK the abortion. Admittedly I’m not sure if that’s possible. Regardless, it’s unfortunate that although about half the population is pro-life, doctors seem to be indoctrinated into being pro-abortion.
