There is an orphanage in israel called lev la lev, does anyone have info on it? My husband and I have given (a hefty) amount of money, maeser etc, over the past few years but I realized that I don’t have too much information on it. I spoke to someone in charge when I discovered the charity, and was sent literature about the facilities, girls etc, but I have never met anyone who has heard of this place before. My father told me that he can’t believe a legitimate Jewish orphanage exists because what Jew would give up their child, or not have family willing to take them. This got me thinking! So again, if anyone has info I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, tizku l’mitzvos!

March 29, 2013 2:08 am at 2:08 am #941709SaysMeMemberi dont know about this orphanage, but your father is sadly incorrect about there not being Jewish orphanages, and the need for them
March 29, 2013 3:49 am at 3:49 am #941710SRHirshMemberi know the place, we have given some of our maaser money for many years. last year on our trip to eretz yisroel we went to visit lev lalev, we had a tour of the orphanage and had lunch with the girls. the staff was warm, loving professional. i did notice that some of the girls have complicated issues that makes them difficult for adoption.

March 29, 2013 6:05 am at 6:05 am #941712smartcookieMemberI don’t know specifics about this orphanage, but I do know that orphanages definitely exist in Israel, sadly. I know someone who grew up in one of those.

It is a legitimate place that has a very professional administration and staff. The girls receive great benefits from living there – receiving a warm home atmosphere, an excellent education and learning about life from role models they can be proud of. Many receive higher education and are brought under the chuppah while living there.

I could get more info after the chag if you could remind me. I am glad though to see that someone was actually there, so you may not need more info at this point.
March 29, 2013 12:29 pm at 12:29 pm #941716MorahRachMemberThanks everyone. Nechoma, thanks for that info but that’s all I needed. They have sent me pictures of the girls and I was pretty sure it was a real, legitimate ace, but no one I know has ever heard of it and my father just wanted to make sure I wasn’t being taken advantage of.
March 29, 2013 9:44 pm at 9:44 pm #941717Dont Worry Be HappyMemberI don’t know if it’s legit or not, but unfortunately I’ve seen a number of scam organizations. Before I give, I go onto Guidestar and review a couple of years 990’s and I also look to see how they are rated on charity navigator, that way I can get an understanding of what type of fundraising they are doing and how the money is being spent. I also do a google search to look for any scandal associated with the organization and its key staff and reverse search the address. Sometimes you expect to see one thing, but street view will show you something entirely different. I’ve found multiple “charities” funneling millions of dollars through a house in a residential neighborhood, that typically would be a red flag. Some charities turn out to be doing amazing work, others are fronts and simply laundering money and/or completely fake and scamming people. I try to look at the tzedaka I give as a business deal and investment, because it’s really Hashem’s money and I’m just in charge of distribution, so I don’t give to organizations that I can’t check out. Also, in Israel adoption is a bit of an issue. They are very reluctant to let children be adopted, unless they are truly orphaned and they won’t allow international adoption at all, an American couldn’t go to Israel and bring home an Israeli child, they would have to make aliya. It’s complicated and political, imagine a chareidi child going to a secular home or the opposite happening. Many of these types of homes are full of children and needed because the parents are in complicated situations as opposed to deceased (drug addicts, prison, poverty etc.)and can’t care for their children. So the girls might be living their in “foster care” and not up for adoption at all, but they do desperately need the help. Hope this helps you in terms of figuring out who they are.
