Anyone know how it works with having internet and kids in school in Lakewood? I heard that you need to sign that you do not have internet in your home.
Does every school in Lakewood do that?
I heard of something called (i believe) an ishur. It allows you to have access. How does that work?
Do people listen? Or do they sign and get it anyway? Is it hard to get an ishur?
If you need it for business is it ok? What about if you have a filter?
If you do not have paid access but mooch of your neighbors wireless, is that a problem?
If you do not have, but have internet on your blackberry does that violate the terms of agreement?
If you know anything about it will be appreciated.

March 6, 2013 12:50 am at 12:50 am #934766BYbychoiceMemberthen is there a reason why you are interested in asking these many questions??
March 6, 2013 2:55 am at 2:55 am #934767HealthParticipantSounds like a troll. Very few businesses in the house need the Net. And if you really need the Net at home for business – you could probably get an Ishur from your Rov, providing you have a filter.

Sounds like a Lakewood wannabe. You want to buy my house??
March 6, 2013 3:59 am at 3:59 am #934769abcd2Participant‘If you do not have paid access but mooch of your neighbors wireless, is that a problem? ‘
I assume you don’t realize but by mooching you are violating Halacha. You are slowing down a connection your neighbor is paying for, plus possibly exposing him to virus/malware.
March 6, 2013 4:15 am at 4:15 am #934770ari-freeParticipantYou should tell your neighbor his wi-fi isn’t secure. In fact, there was a letter in Yated about this issue.
March 6, 2013 4:25 am at 4:25 am #934771jbaldy22Memberoptimum wifi is pretty prevalent around lakewood actually so a lot of people have internet in there house by default. it is not that hard to find someone with an optimum account. not sure what they do about that.
March 6, 2013 5:46 am at 5:46 am #934772Torah613TorahParticipantAnyone who signed that, will not be answering your question.
Actually, that’s not true. One of my siblings’ schools made my parents sign that the internet is for educational purposes only. Our definition of “educational” has rather expanded in recent months.
March 6, 2013 7:35 am at 7:35 am #934773interjectionParticipantIf you send your kids to a school that tells them that the Internet is avoda zara and gilui arayos and your kids know that you use the Internet – even on a blackberry – how much respect do you think your kids are going to have for you
March 6, 2013 3:52 pm at 3:52 pm #934774snowbunny3318MemberIf I understand that correctly, are you assuming that a baal teshuva who decides to install a filter on her computer, and since her family is not religious, they will expect her to get a smartphone, and then when they ask her to look something up and she isn’t able to bypass the filter, that she should lose respect for her parents because the filter decided that visiting the website the parents wanted was an aveirah?
March 6, 2013 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm #934775apushatayidParticipant“how much respect do you think your kids are going to have for you”
Or for the school.
March 6, 2013 5:18 pm at 5:18 pm #934776danielaParticipant1. I don’t recall about an obligation to reside in Lakewood. Sure, if we move to a community we have to conform to the accepted custom, but this does not mean we all must or should move to Lakewood.
2. You now got us very curious, and I imagine other readers too. What are those websites your family asks you to look up for them on your smartphone? are they simultaneously calling you on the cellphone? Why do you think they may be filtered out by a filter? (perhaps you can describe loosely if they are unsuitable to post.) Most of all why do they go through the hassle and expense, and waste your valuable time and their own valuable time, instead of looking up whatever they feel like? Also why should you lose respect for your parents? Ask a question along with all information, if it is permissible you will help, if not permissible you tell them “sorry but I can not help with this”, exactly like if they asked you to be mechalel shabbat, which is much worse than the internet.
March 6, 2013 5:39 pm at 5:39 pm #934777mofrMemberThe people who know the most don’t have internet and are not here to answer. The answers you get here exclude a segment of the frum population.
March 6, 2013 6:39 pm at 6:39 pm #934778snowbunny3318MemberI think it also depends on the person, one of my best friends grew up in a very modern home and went to a co-ed elementary school, but she went to a bais yaakov high school, and now she is at seminar. Another one of my best friends also grew up in a modern orthodox home and she went to the co-ed separate school, and then went to the bais yaakov high school and is now at ateres.
The other girl in our “party” was a baal teshuva along with her family and spent most of her life in bais yaakov schools and is now at Darchei Binah.
I would say that if I actually spent all four years at the bais yaakov high school, and was an FFB, that my experiences would have been much different, but at the end of the day, I am the one who deleted all her Facebook accounts and is trying to install an internet filter. The other three think I am really weird for wanting to do that- and I am at the most modern seminary that I can think of at the moment.
March 6, 2013 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #934779jewishnessParticipantI am not a troll.
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers … Wikipedia
This post is not any more inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic than many other posts on this blog. Lets face it, which post is NOT extraneous? I agree that there will be an occasional inflammatory post, but discussing internet usage in a Jewish community ain’t one of them.
Having said that, I do not live in Lakewood. But I have considered it. This is one of the issues I would like to clarify. Any info is appreciated.

I clarified it and so have others. Right now in Lakewood there is No modern school. The Dayschool closed down awhile ago. The rule of all the Frum schools in Lakewood is Internet is Not allowed in the home. Period. Are there exceptions to the rule? Yes, but to get an exception -you’d have to prove to your Rov that it’s needed for business and you have a filter. Noone gives bogus Ishurs.
Do people lie about having the Internet at their home? Yes, but don’t forget -it might be many years that your kids are in school, (incl. high school) esp. if you have many or even a few kids. It’s quite possible that somehow it will leak out (Lakewood is a big Bungalow colony -almost everywhere) and then you will either have to home school or send out of town to school. I’ve been here awhile and the ones that take chances – a lot of them think – it will be overlooked if they find out – the truth is – almost never will they overlook it. People live dangerously, but sometimes it backfires.
March 6, 2013 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #934781porqueMemberSomething to think about.
What happened when the printing press was invented?
Compared to pre-printing days the amount of non-kosher information now available was comparable to the difference between internet and non-internet. Books of all sorts containg all kind of apikursus and shmutz. Newspapers full of loshin hora and non-kosher ads. etc. etc.
So let’s assur printed matter (and toss your personal seforim library)!
Just a thought.
March 6, 2013 8:52 pm at 8:52 pm #934782jbaldy22Member@Health Modern school? No one has internet in lakewood? You gotta be kidding me.
the truth is the rabbonim are very reasonable people and considering the number of people who are professionals who live in lakewood and have unfiltered internet i find it highly improbable that they are going to be throwing kids out because of it. Considering the number of people who have internet in lakewood it must be either really easy to get an ishur or no one cares about having without it.
That being said this is one of the main reasons I don’t live in lakewood (despite the fact that lakewood has many things going for it).

For s/o who doesn’t live here -you sure know more about it then me.
You can make Choizek all you want, but they take having an Internet very seriously. I know all about the type of guys that have recently moved here -they think the internet is No biggie.
But usually these guys have no kids yet or their kids are still small. To get your kids into school here is very difficult to say the least. I’m telling you -if anyone thinks they are gonna apply to a school and tell them they have the Net, even filtered, but don’t really need it for business, they can forget about getting in. If you tell your Rov that you need it for business -you’ll have to prove it. You and others might think it’s a big joke, but you can’t get away with everything so easily like they do in NY.
March 6, 2013 9:30 pm at 9:30 pm #934784jbaldy22Member@Health I lived in lakewood (a while ago) and I have a plenty of friends who live there and their kids are not small. I don’t ask them whether they lie to the schools or not as it is none of my business. I just know that they all have internet. Most of these guys are professionals – eg. lawyers, accountants etc. In those cases I am pretty sure it isn’t difficult to get an ishur (again not sure if they do as I have used the internet in houses and it was not filtered). There are in increasing number of such people in lakewood these days.
