Is there anything special to do when a person turns 60,50,40,30 etc?
When you turned say 30 – the Hebrew date obviously, did you have a feeling that it was a shas ratzon? Anyone heard anything about any of these times? Is there anything special to do, or tfillah to say?
(Yes, I know one should reflect on the chasdei Hashem etc. I am talking about if it is a shas ratzon for something special)
I remember hearing a long time ago that it is baduk uminusa that the night a person turns 13 and 20, whatever he asks for is granted (I do not know if that means one thing or anything)
February 20, 2013 12:19 am at 12:19 am #961029Torah613TorahParticipantJewishness, that’s interesting, I don’t remember that about 13 or 20.
Every decade is described in Pirkei Avos a different way, ben shloshim l’koach etc. So they do signify a transition.

wow! Great job. Most people would have said, “more mature than me.” Most people would have been wrong.
February 20, 2013 1:29 pm at 1:29 pm #961036oomisParticipantI have heard about 80, because presumably when one reaches 80 they have lived to the age of gevurah, and many men at 83 make a “Bar-mitzvah” seudah, because they have lived 13 years past what is considered the normal lifespan of a man.
February 20, 2013 4:14 pm at 4:14 pm #961037Charles ShortMember30 definitely marked a major turning point in my view of the world, coincidence maybe.

February 21, 2013 2:55 am at 2:55 am #961040OneOfManyParticipantYeeeeeeeech 😛
You know, I’ve actually tried to drink it so many times–heaven knows I could have used it–but it’s just one thing I literally cannot swallow (the other thing being yogurt, but I can swallow that with a moderate amount of gagging). hm
February 21, 2013 3:25 am at 3:25 am #961041SaysMeMembermmmmmmmm yogurt!! my favorite food!!
as far as coffee, you just need to try some instant french vanilla, with a spoonful of sugar and milk. the store stuff’s kinda bitter to start from 😛

Why would you ask for something you cant get? Wish for a white horse at least its real lol. Oh and if unicorns do exist I have a feeling Mod 42 has one.
Haifagirl
I can’t believe your obsession with correcting others. You already envision what others would say in particular situations and how it would be wrong. Can I get personal? I think you have a critical nature. No healthy male likes being criticized and put down by their spouse so if you want to find a good husband you need to work on this area. You will have zero shalom bayis if you intend to correct your husband on a regular basis. Especially over inconsequential things like his imperfect grammar! Soul searching and change is in order. You can of course ignore me because Im just some guy online who knows nothing.

Whyever would I want a white horse? How useless. 😛

Correction: No human being likes to be criticized. Healthy human beings are able to take criticism. (And if you think that being male entitles you to reject all criticism, then you have another think coming.)
I agree that putting someone down with your criticism is unacceptable. And haifagirl’s criticism is sometimes a little strong. But seeing as you feel fit to include intrusive comments about her personal life in your criticism of her, you really have no right to talk.
February 21, 2013 6:38 am at 6:38 am #961045old manParticipantI fully support Haifagirl. If a poster cannot spell simple words or distinguish between homonyms, the message becomes unintelligible. If someone wants to be understood, he or she needs to write intelligibly. Hopefully, correcting poor English will result in writing with more consideration for the reader. Isn’t that why people write? So others can read? So write carefully.

February 22, 2013 12:04 am at 12:04 am #961048OneOfManyParticipantI’ve tried coffee with all sorts of stuff in it. I don’t even like coffee-flavored cakes and chocolates (SACRILEGE).
And I don’t get how people like yogurt–it mamish tastes spoiled. Maybe you guys like spoiled milk, fish, etc. too? XP
February 22, 2013 12:29 am at 12:29 am #961049Torah613TorahParticipantSince this is already off topic…
OneOfMany: Me too! I like coffee flavor but coffee itself gives me a headache, so I avoid it. (Some of my siblings are also really sensitive to caffeine – like we can’t eat chocolate if we want to go to sleep!)
Someone told me that there’s a gene that codes for caffeine enjoyment. I guess we got the decaffeinated version.

Not envisioning, but speaking for painful experience. I’ve heard it said incorrectly at least 95 percent of the time.
June 23, 2013 2:03 pm at 2:03 pm #961051writersoulParticipantOOM: OTHER PEOPLE ALSO HATE COFFEE! I’M SANE! APPARENTLY…! 🙂
I can’t even stand coffee flavoring. Or the smell. Actually, I’ve noticed that there are two types of coffee smells. One of them’s okay. The other one makes me want to throw up.
Yogurt- stuff with bits in.
June 23, 2013 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm #961052ToiParticipanthaifa- stop driving people crazy. your incessant editing hijacks every thread and makes it into grammar color war. its annoying. seriously, go away.

You ever try good brewed coffee?
June 24, 2013 10:46 pm at 10:46 pm #961055jewishfeminist02MemberCoffee is an acquired taste. A few years ago, I couldn’t stand it. Now I love it.
Same goes for most types of alcohol. My husband and I just bought a really nice bottle of wine for shabbos– Segal’s blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot. I’m really, really looking forward to trying it 🙂
June 25, 2013 2:56 am at 2:56 am #961056OneOfManyParticipantwritersoul: lol there are definitely other people who don’t like the stuff. We are not alone in this coffee-loving world. 😛
WIY: Yeah. Some of my brothers are very into that.
June 25, 2013 3:02 pm at 3:02 pm #961057twistedParticipantC’est le Coffee room, n’est pas?
In seriousness, I would think that for an adult, any birthday ought be, midarchei hamussar, a yom iyun nefesh, taking an account of what justifies one’s continued existence.
June 25, 2013 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm #961058GG yekkeMemberThe second Chapter in Tehilim says – “Ani Hashem Yiliditecha, she’al memeni ve’tena” – ask from me and i will give it.
If your question, Jewishness, was are the years 30,40,50,60 (or 60,50,40,30 – what ever you prefer) more of a Shas Ratzon than any other year, i dont think so
