I want to start a thread where people who are avid amateur/semi-pro photographers can discuss ideas and schmooze about how they like to shoot, their gear etc. I’d like it not to be about the newest canon powershot you just got for sem, but more for people who know and understand taking pictures. The point of this thread is to ask questions and get new ideas, and being able to avoid using other sites. Is anyone with me, or am I the only photo nerd here.
I have a Cannon 60D with some cool lenses.
Great idea! I am trying to go from amateur to (pro) status but I know that it doesn’t happen over night. The timing of this thread is funny, because photography is all that I have been talking about for the past week.
What would you all say are the best cameras or lenses for taking newborn portraits?
Thanks, yeah everything I have been looking at is very far out of my price range. If I could I would invest in this because I see a career in it but I can’t right now. I love shooting outdoors, I find that even with the cheaper end cameras, photos still come out beautifully with the natural light.
Toi – Please be serious if you’re going to shoot people, I don’t think they’ll be too happy if they realize they were just in the line of fire, LOL!! JK, it was funny how you worded it.
I love photography and used to take tons of pics of my kids and any place I went. My son seems to be interested in it, but at this stage he’s still young and I don’t want to get him involved in anything too serious while he’s got his learning to focus on, but maybe when he’s a little older.
Interesting to hear what products you can get that do not cost a fortune but are a step above the casual photographer.
I have an old fuji S5700 bridge which I use far too much for my wife’s patience. If I could a decent kit I would, probably a 5D mkIII. But I can’t, so no dice.
What subjects do the olam prefer shooting? Personally, it’s wildlife – trips to the zoo with me can be quite stressful for everyone else…
i like nature- my favorite pics to shoot are macro flower shots. In general i love close-ups and macros best. I use a camera one up of point-n-shoot but not a dslr- i cant afford anything more for a side hobby. I take too many pics for my family’s patience. On a 3 hr trip to the zoo, i’ll come home with close to 300 shots, tho not many great ones. I know, i’m one of those who just shoot n shoot instead of calculating how to perfect it-requires less brain work! But i’m working on learning how to take better shots.
you can take beautiful pictures with a non so expensive camera , you have to be creative.
true true, and yet that dslr is still more expensive! I have a panasonic lumix. It’s major con is the very narrow aperture range. Especially for macro i can use a wide aperture. When i’m alone, i’ll take the time to set the camera better, but with family, i just bracket n rush. I’m taking a photog course so hope to improve my knowledge of working within the limits of my camera. But i still do take too many shots a day!
sorry, i’m in my 4 hour photo class! 🙂 i’ve gotta find it, there’s a photo site i visit where i’ve noticed a lot of jewish-sounding posters and contributers, like boruch, shmuel, etc. I’ll try to find and post (if allowed)

I’m going to try and revive this thread. The wolf posted that he’s interested in photography, and ive had my camera out for the last week, in honor of bein hazmanim. Anyone still interested?

OK, let’s start with this…. what do you like to shoot? What kind of gear do you have?

I like landscape as well as macro photography. Florals and waterfalls are favorites of mine. For a few years I’ve been experimenting with water drop refraction. I’ve also recently begun experimenting with HDR as well.
For a long time, I shot with a Canon XSi, but I recently bought a refurbished 7D and am very happy with it. I have a few lenses —
The 18-55 kit lens
50mm 1.8
75-300mm zoom (the cheap one)
100mm macro lens (my favorite lens — it’s not just a dedicated macro lens, it’s great for portraits and other general uses)
65mm macro lens (the 100mm does 1:1 magnification, this one does 1:5 — I took an amazing shot of my son’s iris a few months back with it). If the mods allow, I’ll put up a link to it.

Toi I checked out your photos- they’re beautiful- especially that close up daisie- (is it actually a lilly by any chance?) and all those water/ sunset pics. Did you do manual or auto focus- because some of the center weighted pics were off a bit.

i like to shoot with a .225, the results arent excellent but does the job
toi – those pictures are really beautiful.
If you’re looking for critique- well, your recently posted pics were nice- and really cute. I think you do better with creative photography, than with the typical. That branch of dead, withered leaves is an amazing shot! Some of the portraits don’t have much meaning to them, however. I’m not the biggest photography enthusiast, though, I’m more of the graphics way. Nice!
Don’t have that great of a critical eye but checked em out and had some friends look at it. They’re truly amazing shots!
