The Gemara says that when Davenning one should stand the width of two doors into the Shul. The basic reason for this is so as not to look like you are on the way out, ot in a hurry to leave. Doesn’t wearing a coat give that same impression?

So many choices! Should I wear a coat by Maariv, or by Halston? Perhaps one by Donna Karan? Maybe I should wear a coat by YSL? What to do, what to do?

    Yes, it is wrong.

Shmoel:- Absolutely, and indeed I always take off my coat, when about to pray in Shul.

I do likewise, when paying a Shiva visit or going to a reception, even if I simply have to place my coat under my chair.

Halachically it is mutar. I once asked about this. Some people use the coat as a jacket for Davening or maybe they are just cold. Either way this is not an issue.

Should one take off his hat while davvening? It looks like he is about to run out of shul??

A hat is a sign of respect in a shul (or out.)

Hmm, so a Ski cap is a sign of respect? Or are you just saying BLACK hats are a sign of respect and if you wear blue, or gray it must be taken off?

Would you sit in a business meeting with a coat on?

It would only be a problem according to the lomdus of Rashi’s pshat and Tosafos’s pshat. But according to the Maharam Mirottenburg there is no issue of looking like you are ready to leave and according to the bach’s explanation of the yerushalmi there also wouldn’t be a problem. Granted all the poskim do say that one should be machmir for all four shittos in which case it might be better to take it off. However one could perhaps argue that just like nowadays when people have a makom kavua there is no problem if it’s next to the door because everyone knows that your just sitting there because it’s your makom kavua, so too if everyone knows that people wear their coats as davening jackets then it might not be a problem.

The big difference is that where by the Makom Kavua you are actually here to stay and it doesn’t even seem like you re about to leave. On the other hand, Davenning with a coat on is actually an expression of the Davenning being a temporary lull between your coming in and going back out.

I was talking about if you are wearing it for a davening jacket. Then it might be similar to a makom kavua in that it’s not assumed that you’re trying to rush out.
