Just noticed this while passing down coney island today, tons of frum couples are off shopping and going out for lunch. Yeshiva high schools are having half days…. I mean, this is a clear sign of us assimilating more and more with the goyim.
It’s not a sign of assimilation.
If people have off work, why should they not make the most of their day off and enjoy it?
As far as high schools, it should be a day like any other day. A half day on Kretchmas is odd to me.
yosef, come on, it just happens to be that many ppl have off, and schools who have alot of secular or non jewish english teachers have a half day. it’s no different than any other legal holiday. assimilation, i think not.
Most frum schools have a half day since they hire goyim for the secular subjects, and the goyim get the day off since it is there religious holiday. Schools that don’t hire non-Jewish teachers, can have a full day. Lots of frum people shop on Dec. 25 – the stores are empty since the goyim don’t shop on Dec. 25, and their stores are closed. We pretty much have the world to ourselves since the goyim observe the day with family, not shopping or sight seeing.
It is a clear sign that people are given off from work and that the high schools cant get the english teachers to come in on their own holiday.

While its hard to explain, many people actually work and warn a living.
If you work and earn a living you are usually off on december 25. Since its a free day off with no obligations, why not enjoy the day off and go out for lunch with your wife or husband
what does it have to do with assimilating. It is considered a holiday in this country – should someone who is off go on purpose and work. For these people there is no difference between Dec 25 and Jan 1 – they are both holidays

There are more and more shiurim and yarchei kallah functions on these holidays then ever before.

I guess you’re too assimilated to understand that anything healty is wrong. The exceptions are those things that the Gemorah or Rambam state are healty.
If I would set foot on my place of employment after 5.30PM on a workday, or on a weekend or legal holiday, I would be prosecuted for trespass, so are you yosefc18 suggesting that notwithstanding I should go to work on this holiday to show my disdain for this fellow born in Beth Lechem, even though I shall be brought up on charges for trespassing?
I would be more concerned about the Chanukah Party at the White House organized by frum yidden. That should be a concern for assimilation, not enjoying a day off with ones wife

i enjoy all the holidays that allows my office to give me a paid day off from work.

On this issue, see Igros Moshe Y.D. vol 3, simon 85 that one should not vacation during this time EVEN if he has no intention to celebrate in their holidays, but vacations merely because the parents are off work and want to take a family trip, since the innocent intentions do not vitiate the issur.

I wouldn’t be able to learn in a yeshiva without internet. I have a Jastrow CD, Bar Ilan, and YUTorah, and R’ Eli Mansour, in addition to other resources, that greatly aid learning.
