Just noticed this while passing down coney island today, tons of frum couples are off shopping and going out for lunch. Yeshiva high schools are having half days…. I mean, this is a clear sign of us assimilating more and more with the goyim.
December 25, 2012 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #916794rebdonielMemberIt’s not a sign of assimilation.
If people have off work, why should they not make the most of their day off and enjoy it?
As far as high schools, it should be a day like any other day. A half day on Kretchmas is odd to me.
December 25, 2012 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #916795phdmomMemberyosef, come on, it just happens to be that many ppl have off, and schools who have alot of secular or non jewish english teachers have a half day. it’s no different than any other legal holiday. assimilation, i think not.
December 25, 2012 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #916796akupermaParticipantMost frum schools have a half day since they hire goyim for the secular subjects, and the goyim get the day off since it is there religious holiday. Schools that don’t hire non-Jewish teachers, can have a full day. Lots of frum people shop on Dec. 25 – the stores are empty since the goyim don’t shop on Dec. 25, and their stores are closed. We pretty much have the world to ourselves since the goyim observe the day with family, not shopping or sight seeing.
December 25, 2012 9:35 pm at 9:35 pm #916797JayMatt19ParticipantIt is a clear sign that people are given off from work and that the high schools cant get the english teachers to come in on their own holiday.
anything more than that, the signs start getting fuzzy
December 25, 2012 9:51 pm at 9:51 pm #916798golferParticipantOr perhaps a clear sign of offices, banks and other places of employment being closed, and non-Jewish teachers celebrating their holiday and requesting the day off.
December 25, 2012 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #916799zahavasdadParticipantWhile its hard to explain, many people actually work and warn a living.
If you work and earn a living you are usually off on december 25. Since its a free day off with no obligations, why not enjoy the day off and go out for lunch with your wife or husband
December 25, 2012 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm #916800flyerParticipantwhat does it have to do with assimilating. It is considered a holiday in this country – should someone who is off go on purpose and work. For these people there is no difference between Dec 25 and Jan 1 – they are both holidays
December 25, 2012 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #916801sof davarMemberor…
it is a sign of families taking advantage of the father/husband being off from work to spend quality time together.
December 25, 2012 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #916802YentaParticipantThere are more and more shiurim and yarchei kallah functions on these holidays then ever before.
December 25, 2012 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #916803YW Moderator-18Moderatoryenta, true, but what is wrong with a husband and wife having some time together if their places of employment are closed. some people might even think it is a healthy thing.

I guess you’re too assimilated to understand that anything healty is wrong. The exceptions are those things that the Gemorah or Rambam state are healty.
December 25, 2012 11:55 pm at 11:55 pm #916805147ParticipantIf I would set foot on my place of employment after 5.30PM on a workday, or on a weekend or legal holiday, I would be prosecuted for trespass, so are you yosefc18 suggesting that notwithstanding I should go to work on this holiday to show my disdain for this fellow born in Beth Lechem, even though I shall be brought up on charges for trespassing?
December 26, 2012 12:13 am at 12:13 am #916806Git MeshigeParticipantI would be more concerned about the Chanukah Party at the White House organized by frum yidden. That should be a concern for assimilation, not enjoying a day off with ones wife

December 26, 2012 2:11 am at 2:11 am #916809shmendrickMemberSee http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/taking-vacation-holidays-between-dec-25-and-jan-1
On this issue, see Igros Moshe Y.D. vol 3, simon 85 that one should not vacation during this time EVEN if he has no intention to celebrate in their holidays, but vacations merely because the parents are off work and want to take a family trip, since the innocent intentions do not vitiate the issur.
See further, Netei Gavriel, addition to Hilchos Chanuka, Minhagei Nitel, ch. 4, halacha 14 and footnote 16 and 17.
December 26, 2012 4:50 am at 4:50 am #916810yosefc18MemberWhat im saying is that we have to be careful that this day off doesnt soon turn into us celebrating this goyish holiday, especially since it doesnt have the leniency of being an “american holiday” as thanksgiving does – xmas is purely a christian holiday and no one will argue with that. We do see in our history as jews where something starts off innocent and can turn into avoda zara, or an aveira without anyone noticing it.
December 26, 2012 5:13 am at 5:13 am #916811phdmomMemberyosef, that is clearly not what you said. your initial post was intentionally provocative, unnecessary and hyperbolic.
December 26, 2012 9:48 pm at 9:48 pm #916812apushatayidParticipant“Xmas becoming a jewish holiday?”
why not. it celebrates a jew.

And most of the songs were written by a Jew, Irving Berlin, the son of a chazzan.
December 26, 2012 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #916814Rav TuvParticipantI think it’s a badge of honor that the goyim ask me to work so they can enjoy their holiday. That is a kiddush Hashem.
December 27, 2012 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #916815shmendrickMembermusser zoger – let me get this straight, you think it is a kovod for you to assist an akum to serve his avodah zorah and transgress on e of the sheva mitzvos bnei noach?? Huh?? This choggeh is directly connected to avoda zorah! As a yid you have a responsibility to insure that even goyim must keep the sheva mitzvos. At the very least, how dare you consider it an “honor” to help the goy serve his getchkeh?!
This is what happens when secular thinking poisons the mind set of a yid. Open a gemorah, fill your mind with Toras Chaim and you will start thinking straight and get to understand what is an honor for a yid.
If you are not working during the goyish tumahdays, come join us in the Bais Medresh at BMG and you will feel honored.
December 27, 2012 7:39 pm at 7:39 pm #916816TheGoqParticipantBMG? where is that?
December 27, 2012 8:09 pm at 8:09 pm #916817apushatayidParticipantRebDoniel. I wrote that tongue in cheek. There is no reason to reply to the OP who is clearly looking for nothing more than to stir up the pot a little. In true toll fashion, the OP has not even commented after his opening remark.
December 27, 2012 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #916818zahavasdadParticipantInternet is banned at BMG. In fact its assur to even hold a smart phone there.
All the real bocherim there know that
December 30, 2012 12:49 am at 12:49 am #916820rebdonielMemberI wouldn’t be able to learn in a yeshiva without internet. I have a Jastrow CD, Bar Ilan, and YUTorah, and R’ Eli Mansour, in addition to other resources, that greatly aid learning.
