It looks so stiff and uncomfortable why won’t they open the top button? Even the young kids have them closed and if they notice its open they close it. Is there some reason for this?
December 5, 2012 7:23 pm at 7:23 pm #911283ZeesKiteParticipantI don’t know.
Maybe one of two reasons. Either it’s more dignified. Or more tzniusdig.
December 5, 2012 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #911284zahavasdadParticipantFor the same reason some Chassidim dont wear buttons and use draw string shirts
December 5, 2012 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #911285shmoelMemberIt looks more regal. (I don’t do it. Perhaps I should.)
December 5, 2012 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #9112862scentsParticipantI dont know how you established that Chassidim close the top button.
December 5, 2012 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #911287akupermaParticipantSince they don’t wear ties, the button-down look is more formal. And since they don’t wear ties, they can buy bigger shirts.
And that is only at “full dress” mode- equivalent to wearing a tie for more “modern” styles. In less than “dressed up” mode (equivalent to American men not wearing a tie), the button gets undone.
Note that the closed neck (buttoned collar) as an alternative to wearing a tie is no limited to Jews, but is also found among goyim in dress situations where men don’t wear a tie (e.g. the dress uniform of the Marine Corps).

December 5, 2012 11:57 pm at 11:57 pm #911290This name is already takenParticipantaccording to the mishne brura (siman alef I think) you would have to close it (you also wouldnt be allowed to wear short sleeves)

What do you mean?
December 6, 2012 5:25 am at 5:25 am #911292Josh31Participant“Like akuperma said. Chasidim are Jewry’s Marine Corps.”
I always knew I could never make it in the Marines.
We have to have a clear path for those children of Chasidim who cannot make it in the Marines, but could serve Hashem as fully observant Jews in other ways.
December 6, 2012 11:19 am at 11:19 am #911293just my hapenceParticipantshmoel – akuperma may as well have used any other organisation with a uniform, e.g. airport baggage handlers. Are Chasidim Jewry’s airport baggage handlers?

We do. They’re called litvaks. Although frankly I know more litvaks that went chassidish then the other way.
December 6, 2012 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #911295zahavasdadParticipantChasidim are Jewry’s Marine Corps.
What funny is Chasidus was for people who could not take the rigidneess of jewish life. Thats why Chassidim sing more and have Farbrgins unlike yeshivish.
It was never meant to be the most strict of stricts, It was meant for the everyman

It is highly possible that it is “goyish” to have your top button open but I have not confirmed this yet. I will try and ask a chassid. However the question arises, if caught with an open button are there consequences?
December 7, 2012 4:12 am at 4:12 am #911297Josh31ParticipantChassidus used to be an approach that opened up Avodas Hashem to the non elite. But in my lifetime it has turned around 180 degrees. On the other hand, the US Marine Corps have always been an elite group and proud of it.

Not so sure that is true. If you will look at the chassidei/talmidei baal shem tov they were all spiritual Torah giants. Every one of them were people who were thoroughly versed in Shas and poskim and tremendous masmidim and ovdei Hashem. If anything it started out as being for the elite and for creating elite people. I’m not sure it was even meant for the masses.
December 7, 2012 4:04 pm at 4:04 pm #911299zahavasdadParticipantRead the stories of Rev Levi Yitzchak, Its clear he wasnt going for the elites
