November 27, 2012 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #909993artchillParticipantI heard that Rav Schwab used to walk with his sons to shul on Shabbos. One Shabbos a car came barrelling down the hill and killed his seven year old son. Rav Schwab insisted to the family that they stay happy lekavod Shabbos.
I heard another similar situation happened in 1990. There was a fatal accident on Purim night involving yeshiva boys. The levayah was on Purim and after the kaddish was said, Rav Schwab reminded the community that there’s a mitzvah of Simchas Purim and mourning must wait.

I imagine that this type of emotional response is possible. It is also inhuman.

November 27, 2012 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #909996HealthParticipantBE – He was once giving a Shmuz and said “My brother – a Rov in Baltimore”. At that time he was a Big Rov in Washington Heights.
I assumed that he meant a Musser tidbit. That your Chashevous (greatness) comes from your beginings, not from your lofty position that somehow you got appointed to. Even though the job in Balto. he was also appointed to, but there really wasn’t much Kovod attached to that position.
November 27, 2012 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #909997Veltz MeshugenerMemberWhen he was still in Europe, he suspected that a certain official was from Amalek because of some evil personal characteristics that the person had as well as something about his origin. He killed the man, because he held that it was a safek d’oraysoh and should be decided l’chumra, as long as he was sure that he wouldn’t get caught. He was correct about not getting caught – the story only came out when he related it at a yeshiva shalosh seudos in America (passaic), long after the statute of limitations had passed.

Human shmuman you are talking shtusim. The Torah tells us how to feel when to feel how not to feel when not to feel. Its not inhuman to delay your feelings. Actually if anything that is the beauty and greatness of human beings. We can control ourselves and delay our feelings and urges. An animal MUST do what it feels like doing regardless of consequences or other factors. We are humans and we can train ourselves to do Hashems bidding regardless of what the outside world decides as human norms.

November 28, 2012 1:08 am at 1:08 am #910000tjaMemberI haven’t attended an Agudah Convention since Rav Schwab Z”L became ill.
He was the only one capable of touching one’s Neshama as he always spoke from the heart.

November 29, 2012 3:07 am at 3:07 am #910002farrocksMemberold man:
Isn’t there a story in the Gemorah where an Amora’s seven (?) children passed away on Shabbos and his wife didn’t tell him until Motzei Shabbos so they could continue keeping Simchas Shabbos?

I would recommend searching his name on torah.org. It will bring up any articles that mention him.

The man replied I Live in Monsey. Rav shach looked at him and asked why do you have to come to me when you have R Modche Schwab in Monsey?
