    Hi,

Im considering Gateshead and i was wondering what you can tell me about the old and new. Also, is there any sort of college type program there that either the school gives as optional or girls do on their own .. if not isnt there some school in manchester that has one?

There was a similar thread a year or so ago regarding Ghd.

As for the college style program, in the UK kids end their schooling with GCSE’s. Most move on after that to Yeshiva or sem. In Ghd the schoolin system ends there. In Manchester there is an option to further that education to “A Levels”. The sems (New Ghd & new Manchesster) offer courses that give qualifications. It is possible many of these courses are in conjunction with colleges and uni’s.

From my experinces there, I reccommend you go see the place before commiting yourself, especially if you come from the USA as there may be a major culture difference!

    Good luck with your decision

Nothing wrong with gateshead as long as you don’t mind your children wearing their weekday shoes on shabbos.

@yaff80 Thanks Im just a little puzzled by your answer. I know that typically the london schools end in 11th. If I want to continue to Gateshead instead of AMerican 12th grade is there any option to have any sort of college program or any where to take college type classes for credits after class… Does the school allow that?

If not, is there any sort of school in MAnchester that does do that?

In terms of schools, the boyts schools actually end at tenth, it’s the girls schools which end at eleventh, but many schools have the option of twelth. they call it sixth form.

in terms of community gateshead is extremely strict, with seperate times for boys and girls to shop, all sorts of rules what the shops may sell… etc. it is also extremely litvish

As far i am aware, even the girls are not catered for with regards to 12th grade. In manchester there are.

i do not know if all these gareshead stories are true, but i would far more worried about what happens to a child who forgets to bring his sneakers to school than wearing weekday shoes on shabbos.

The seminary there are supposedly very good.

There is an option for courses in a moissad called AWIT run by a family Grunbaum. the seminaries allow girls to pursue courses there in their spare time, and i think their courses are recognised by many of the english universities. Hatlzocho.

there are two seminaries in Gateshead. As far as I understand, one is more openminded with regards to vactional courses than the other. Make your inquiries and do it well!

Mrs. Katz, many gateshead stories are true, but as a matter of fact, there is a new rov who i think was “matir” wearing shabbos shoes.

I know Many people who have been to Gtshd New.

I have never ever heard such raving reports! its sounds incredible!!

apparently, the rabbonim are very open minded, and talk very openly to the girls on whatever is on there minds. and they have changed the lives of many many girls! especially girls from america that have come.

there are very few English girls that actually come, its more american-isreali, French and american.

They are very strict on Tzniyus. and its small sem, about 150 girls. as opposed to old gthsd which is 400 girls and your likely to get lost there.

the courses are generally for the french and english girls, and if you have a visa U can also do them. in Gtshd Old there are only courses if you arrange them yourself. in Gthsd old they study most of the day hebrew subjects, whereas in New its half/half.

it is true the girls that come to New are more open minded, and so are the lessons. But as said before R’katz is very very strict in accepting.

Gateshead is not for everybody. Many Americans get very homesick very fast. The weather

there is terrible, and the atmosphere to walk on the streets can be unpleasant.

and the atmosphere to walk on the streets can be unpleasant. Since they are still living in the middle ages, when the streets are segregated, with males & females not being allowed to roam the streets at the same hours.

The atmosphere is very pleasent for frum yidden. For frei and goyim I cannot speak for, but others already have above.

    147,

“when the streets are segregated, with males & females not being allowed to roam the streets at the same hours”

    ???!!!

I don’t know what you are talking about! I have lived in Gateshead for a total of 13 years of my life, and havre never come across segregated streets. (Maybe Monroe, New Square or Stamford Hill).

When em0616 says that “the atmosphere to walk on the streets can be unpleasant”, I imagine s/he means the non-jewish locals, called “geordies” who can be extremely unpleasant. The shop hours are segregated, simply because Ghd being a very small community of 350/400 families has only small shops and it is a practical solution.

Otherwise, Ghd is a very pleasant heimishe friendly place, with an old-time traditional yiddishe outlook.

Except for Motzei Shabbos in summer being at insanely late hours.

Rabbi katz is literraly an odom gadol, he is both a talmid chacham and has a real base in hashkapha, as well as being an amazing speaker. For halocho they have one of the prominent gateshead poskim, called rabbi elozor leiberman – i think he is the the local beis din, as well as helping out for the london kedassia – the extra machmir hechsher in england originally headed by R’ Padwa zatza”l

True. Its even later now, than it was during the time of the Alter Rov Zatza”l.

amosphere in streets is unpleasant because of the very open antisemitism there which bH we dont get in the US as much.

if i would want to apply for next year where do i get more info and application and stuff?

segregation in the streets? I never knew, and have lived here for a few years now. Thanks for telling me, I have been sinning without knowing…

Seriously, the shop times are segregated for YESHIVA BOCHURIM and SEM GIRLS only since there are a total of about 1500 boys and girls who come to learn in gateshead and we are a small community. Yes, the goyim can be a bit rough but there have not been any major incidents, and personally, I prefer open anti-semitism to living somewhere where they say ‘equality for all, we love all kinds of people’ and then go and stab you in the back. At least here we know they don’t like us… but like I said it’s not that bad

and motze shabbos in canada is also insanely late hours. It’s called living in the North. Same is true in scandinavia and russia. and if you live in the north pole you don’t get a motze shabbos at all

Oh come on everyone- the anti semitism in gateshead is way way over-rated! They are the friendliest non jews ive ever encountered! Obviously motze shabbos when they’re drunk and have had a few too many they might shout a curse word but thats it!!!

It’s a bit more than that. The ones who are friendly are very friendly, but those who aren’t can be downright nasty. And because it’s a working class area, they are very, very low people. So when they have had one pint too many they like to break car mirrors, amongst other things.
