Sometimes during the long davenings during the yomim noraim I find it hard to concentrate and often find my mind wandering contemplating complete nonsense on a day that is supposed to be full of focus. The past few years I have brought a sefer with me to shul and when I feel myself spacing out, I learn a little and then when my strength is back I return to the tzibbur.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a sefer for this year?
The Ben Ish Chai says that we should not read/learn during davening. I take that as an aspiration, but difficult during the long services. And it’s better to learn Torah than chat with your neighbor or think about non-Torah topics.
How about a classic like Shaare Teshuvah? It works for me.
Look at the shaar on the month of Tishrei. He guides you through the various parts of the Avoidas hayoim with the correct thoughts one should have at each juncture.
