What is a reasonable amount to charge for a limudei kodesh tutoring/learning service in an upscale neighborhood? What would you be willing to pay for 1/2 an hour and a full hour… once a week. Tutoring is done at your house at your convenience.

How upscale is the neighborhood? How rich is the family?

We pay $50/hour for ivrit tutoring in Brooklyn. We go to the teacher’s house, though.

When I teach laining, I usually let them pay me whatever they want. But that’s only because I’m very unassertive and don’t feel very confident in charging for my services.

It also helps that I enjoy private teaching and am usually willing to do it for free anyway, so if I don’t get paid, it’s not a huge deal.

I understand this may not apply to your situation.

Honestly, it depends how old you are and why you’re doing this. If you actually need a supplemental Parnassah then it depends on what people want to pay. But if you’re just a younger guy looking for some money, this isn’t the way to do it. It’s probably not even Muttar to charge more than minimum wage, unless you are tutoring younger kids in which case you can charge normal babysitting rates. Mah Ani B’chinam Af Atem B’chinam.

Sam: Why is it a halachic problem for a younger guy to charge the same rate as an older guy?

Shein: If you actually do it as a real Parnassah there’s more room to be Meikil and that the Zman Batalah of someone who has to support a family is more. Also, you can call part of the fee Tzeddaka. But technically it’s Assur to charge for teaching no matter what.

It’s a service done on the side, somewhat of a part time job… just wanted to get a range and an idea of what people charge and pay. Thanks!

So, if someone tells me that they won’t use me unless I agree to accept payment (and, yes, that has happened), are they transgressing “lifnei iver?”

Id say if you are unqaulified, About 30$ an hour

If your qualified, the going rate for private tutoring is 55$ an hour.
