This question s directed specifically to men.

Would any of you be able to identify the value of a watch by it’s name?

For example: if you were to receive a watch from either Tag Heuer, Gucci, Swiss army or Hugo boss would you understand and know the quality/value or are they all the same to you?

Furthermore, would you wear a Swiss army watch with their logo/crest on it (especially if it is tiny and almost non visible)? It seems to be similar to a tzelem, although I’m not sure that’s what the symbol was meant to represent.

They’re all the same. Wouldn’t know one brand from the other, insofar which is considered higher quality or more costly. Of course, I suppose, one could Google that information if one were so inclined. But offhand? Not a chance.

The only exception would be something like a Rolex, which everyone knows costs thousands of dollars. Even though I’d still have no idea how many thousands and I still wouldn’t know the difference between one Rolex and the next.

The only thing that really matters is that it is a nice looking, heimishe, watch.

    Thanks Englishman

Are you familiar with the Swiss army logo?

I’m wondering if there’s an issue with wearing an item with such a logo.

The Swiss Army logo has a cross. I’m not sure whether there is a halachic problem or not. But even if there weren’t, I’d be embarrassed to wear it on my person and wouldn’t have it because I wouldn’t want a cross.

Mommamia: I happened to see someone with a Swiss Army watch today and looked at the symbol. Pashtus is that that cross has Christian origins and could very well be problematic.

The Swiss Army logo (and the Swiss flag and the flags of many European countries), with its tzelem, is certainly of Christian origin. Use of the white cross as a military ensign has been used in the Old Swiss Confederacy since the 14th century. Depictions in the Swiss illustrated chronicles show a flag with an asymmetrical white cross including the body of Yushke.

    Thanks for your replies.

I’m not going to buy the Swiss army brand.

Not a man, but just wondering, mommam, how you feel about wearing Tory Burch- very popular, trendy these days. The logo is not as clearly a cross as the Swiss Army logo, but it’s still a cross. I see it on so many people and I don’t think they’re doing anything wrong, but personally, it makes me uncomfortable. How about you?

Tag Heuer is the most prestigious watch brand you have listed. Gucci, hugo boss and Swiss army are okay, but if your going for the best quality watch you should get a tag (plus they are the best value of the brands you listed.

Funny that this thread popped up. My wife bought for my birthday (a week ago or so) a Seiko Watch. Good Luck!

Golfer- coming from someone who has Tory burch I thought it wasnt a problem considering the fact it’s represented as a T not as a cross as opposed to the Swiss army logo

I like skagens personally. My dad’s black Mavado is really nice but her prefers his grandfather’s rolex.

I wound up going with an oris. I never heard of it, but it was being sold by a reputable distributor, and it most closely resembled the look I was searching for while being within my budget.

Golfer: I’ve never seen a Tory burch. If I would, I’m not sure I’d know it!

Rabbaim: I love the idea of incentives for Limud hatorah. They give in yeshiva, but I never thought to give at home too. Thanks!
