When R. Yochanan heard that there are old people in Bavel, he was amazed, for it says, “Lema’an Yirbu Yemeichem vi’Yemei Veneichem Al ha’Adamah…” — long life is only in Eretz Yisrael!

Didn’t R’ Yochanan know that outside of Eretz Yisroel there are even old Gentiles? That there are also old animals and ancient trees? It is not that unusual that one is “amazed” by such an occurrence! Besides, these Gentiles, animals or trees don’t need a special zchus to grow old naturally! If so, why should a Yid be the ONLY species that needs a special zchus to reach a “natural” old age??

Keep learning, it’ll teach you how to think properly. Then you’ll realize this is a faulty argument.

Health – This is not a woman. It’s a troll, and quite close to a type 2 at that. (http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/a-study-in-trolls)

No comment to your Halachic statement.

    Rebbitzen Golden,

If you learn Gemara with Tos’, then you can look up some mefarshim that you husband might have in his library. So ask you well-learned husband for a sefer or two, or better yet ask him your question outright and please get back to us.

The Penei Yehoshua explains that R’ Yochanan’s ???? was that there were more long-livers in Bavel than in Israel and that within Bavel it was specifically Jews who were living long.

The Ben Yehoyada explains that R’ Yochanan lived for 400 years and his ???? was for sure not about regular old age, rather it was that someone in chutz l’aretz could live as long as him i.e. 400 years.
