Is there a source for wearing diffenrent shoes on shabbos? My husband tells me that all the halachois only refer to clothes but shoes are not included. and is there really a diffenrce between men and ladies?
August 5, 2012 3:11 am at 3:11 am #1134464Sam2ParticipantThe Tzitz Eliezer has a T’shuvah (I want to say at the beginning of Chelek 22 but I’m not positive) where he discusses if shoes count as a Begged. He doesn’t specifically discuss in regards to Shabbos, but that’s definitely a place to start. If I recall correctly, he would probably agree with your husband. However, the Minhag very clearly is to be Mechabed Shabbos with special shoes-especially someone who wears sneakers/loafers etc. during the week.
August 5, 2012 1:04 pm at 1:04 pm #1134465Avi KParticipantThere is a machloket between the Korban HaEida and the Pnei Moshe as to how to read the Yerushalmi (Shabbat 6:2) that either says “it’s not the way of people to have two pairs of shoes” or “is it not the way of people to have two pairs of shoes?”
Both the Ben Ish Hai (vol. 4 OC 13), the Kaf HaHaim (262:25) an the Tzitz Eliezer (7:2) say that they are not levush, the proof being that “malbish arumim” does not cover them (the Tzitz Eliezer says that levush is something that encircles the body). Rav Ovadia (Yalkut Yosef 262:6) also says that it is not necessary to have a special pair but it is sufficient to polish one’s shoes beforehand although one who has special shoes will receive a beracha. However, the Minhat Shabbat (72:71) says that it is necesssary, and this was the minhag of the Gra (Maaseh Rav 145) as did the Hazon Ish (Dinim v’Hanhagot meMaran HaHazon Ish 9:3). However, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (VeAlehu Lo Yavul 1:137) and Rav Eliashiv (Ashrei Ish 2:5) did not.
August 6, 2012 12:35 am at 12:35 am #1134466rabbiofberlinParticipantDoesn’t the gemoro in shabbos (the daf escapes me now)say that rovo put on special “puzmankes’ (socks) for shabbos?
August 6, 2012 2:24 am at 2:24 am #1134467WolfishMusingsParticipantMy Shabbos shoes are my only shoes.
During the week, I wear black sneakers.

August 7, 2012 9:18 am at 9:18 am #1134469yerushalaymerMemberI WAS in the Golders green section of London recently for a shabbos and i am sure that i saw in one of the minhagim books there that boys until eleven years old should wear shoes with buckles, and from eleven slip on shoes, with a designer name, lechatchila tommy hilfiger.
August 7, 2012 11:06 am at 11:06 am #1134470I think that Shabbos shoes were a relatively recent invention.
I feel sometimes that the people who buy their kids Shabbos shoes are doing it for the wrong reasons, and so are those who don’t.
BTW SAM2, where does your minhag come from? i’ve been doing a boy’s pirchim group for years, and loads of kids still don’t have them.

August 8, 2012 6:22 am at 6:22 am #1134474YW Moderator-42ModeratorI wear special purple crocs on Shabbos to match my purple Shabbos Suit. During the week I wear either my yellow, red, or green crocs.
August 8, 2012 10:54 am at 10:54 am #1134475ybrooklynteacherMemberthanks everyone,especially Sam2 and avi. k
August 8, 2012 11:25 am at 11:25 am #1134476goldersgreenerParticipanti personally think that there is more kavod Shabbos in polishing your shoes, than in having a different pair for Shabbos. (especially my children, where i would have to pay for the shoes.)
BTW yeruhsalymer, i take offense, i am from GG, and my boys do NOT have shabbos shoes, buckles, tommy hilfiger or anything alse. And yes, brooklyn, i think girls are different, they should be more into their looks, and they run around less, so of course it makes sense to buy them an extra pair of shoes.
BTW yerushalaymer again, if you really lived in yerushalayim you would have sent your son to “kaytana” with sandals not sneakers.
August 13, 2012 11:26 am at 11:26 am #1134477ybrooklynteacherMemberThere is a very choshuve litvishe kehilla in Englane where the old Rov, who was an Odom Godoil ad me’oid didn’t allow prents to buy shabbos shoes for boys before they were bar mitzvah, he felt it caused jealousy.
i assumme that it does not have a mekoir in halacha.

August 15, 2012 11:20 am at 11:20 am #1134480Moishe SMemberCan anyone persuade my parents to buy me Shabbos shoes
August 16, 2012 10:09 am at 10:09 am #1134481Moishe SMemberNo help anyone? My mother says that she “doesn’t beleive in them. Is she an apikoirus?
August 16, 2012 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm #1134482SL1MemberMoishe S: No your mother is not an apikoirus since shabbos shoes is not one of the fundamentals of yiddishkeit. If you want to convince her maybe tell her to look at Sam2 and Avi K’s posts.
August 16, 2012 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #1134483ToiParticipant42- its funny you think thats entirely crazy, there is a guy in toronto who has hats to match his wacky suits. like green etc. no jokes.
August 16, 2012 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm #1134484WolfishMusingsParticipantIs she an apikoirus?
I find the fact that you’re even willing to consider the possibility that your mother is an apikorus simply on the grounds that she cannot/will not buy you Shabbos shoes to be odious, repugnant and thoroughly disrespectful.
The fact that you’re willing to publicly consider it on a message board is all the worse.

August 16, 2012 11:02 pm at 11:02 pm #1134485Moishe SMemberWolf, I was joking. But you guys are way too serious for me.
August 16, 2012 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm #1134486yerushalaymerMemberI wonder how many of you people have been here, because moost men here wear the same shoes on Shabbos.
By the way, Moishe S, ask your mother if you can do some small jobs, etc… and maybe buy your own shoes.
August 16, 2012 11:09 pm at 11:09 pm #1134487WolfishMusingsParticipantWolf, I was joking
Calling one’s parent an apikorus is not something to joke about. I’m all for a good sense of humor and fun, but there are some things that should not be joked about. Calling one’s parent an apikorus, even in jest, is one of them.

August 20, 2012 10:30 am at 10:30 am #1134488goldersgreenerParticipantWhy don’t you move to Gateshead? (Or maybe E”Y).
August 21, 2012 10:37 am at 10:37 am #1134489Sorry golders Greener, but why should he move to gateshead, according to you he can move to Golders Green for the same price. (unless he doesn’t want to have to walk around in socks every time he forgets his sneakers.)
August 21, 2012 10:38 am at 10:38 am #1134490Anyway, Gateshead has a whole va’ad to decide who can live there. They might not welcome someone who is so megusham that he wants Shabbos shoes (and whose mother is a chashash apikoires.)!!!!
August 21, 2012 10:45 am at 10:45 am #1134491Moishe SMemberAny better ideas, anyone?
August 21, 2012 12:45 pm at 12:45 pm #1134492yitayningwutParticipantrabbiofberlin – The Gemara in Shabbos (10a) is talking about putting on special garments for davening.
August 21, 2012 12:57 pm at 12:57 pm #1134493akupermaParticipantIt’s a mitzvah to wear your best clothes on Shabbos, so if you own more than one pair of shoes (not everyone does), one should wear the better one on Shabbos.
August 21, 2012 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm #1134494OnlyTheTruthParticipantIf you want to be a Machmer and be m’chabud/Honor the Holy Shabbos it would for sure be nice to have a special pair. If it looks not shabbosdig then it is probably not an honor. But your not a mechlul shabbos if thats all you can afford.
I knew a person from Pre war Eroupe who even war a different Yarmeluka and and made sure never to wear pure black pant on shabbos. So it should be sepecial for Shabbos.
That’s why many Rebbe’s wear White pants on shabbos. That you should see it’s different from a whole week.
August 21, 2012 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #1134495frummy in the tummyParticipantI only have the one pair, but on Shabbos I call them Shabbos Shoes. Am I yotzei?
August 21, 2012 9:03 pm at 9:03 pm #1134496goldenkintMemberRav Eliyashiv and Rav Shlomo Zalman Zatsal both lived very frugally and didnt have or spend money on extras. if you could polish your shoes to make them presentable for shabbos, fine. if you anyway have several pairs of shoes , then of course keep a pair special for Shabbos. as far as girls and women ,generally Shabbos shoes are less sturdy and prettier than strong everyday shoes. so its nice le’kavos shabbos to have them if you can afford it.
August 22, 2012 4:04 am at 4:04 am #1134497Avi KParticipantAccording to Kabbala one should wear at least four white garments and definitely not black (Shaar HaKavenot, Inyan Rechitzat Panav, Yadav v’Raglav d”h gam tzarich adam lilbosh bigdei lavan; Ben Ish Chai Halachot Year 2 Lech Lecha 18; Kaf HaChaim 262:26). However, the pashtanim disagree (Biur Halacha 262:2 d”h begadim naim and see Shabbat 147a).
October 11, 2012 11:15 am at 11:15 am #1134498mrs. KatzMemberSorry to get involved moishy s, but i think if you offer your mother that for two weeks you will not do anything crazy in school, she might just agree to buy you about six pairs of shabbos shoes.

October 15, 2012 11:21 am at 11:21 am #1134500Shoe store assistantMembershabos shoes are like shtreimels, you don’t need a source, it’s just soemthing that everyone you know does.
October 15, 2012 1:28 pm at 1:28 pm #1134501Shoe store assistantMemberThe more sensible question is what is the source for the colors. why do most people go for black?
What abouit sock color? Does it depend on your grandfather’s hair? black, gray or white?

January 1, 2013 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #1134506Shoe store assistantMemberJust one more thread ….
January 2, 2013 3:01 am at 3:01 am #1134507squeakParticipantSo you revived the shoe thread and the population growth thread. Just curious, do you sell more pairs of shoes in small sizes than in larger ones? If popular “theories” are correct you should be able to tell us about a noticeable difference in the number of size 2 shoes you sell each yomtif season vs. the number of size 5. Any truth to that?
January 13, 2013 10:15 am at 10:15 am #1134508Shoe store assistantMemberAny shoe store sells more shoes in smaller sizes, simply because children’s feet grow much faster at a younger age, they spend less time in a classroom and more time running around, and younger parents are more likely to buy their chioldren extra pairs – i.e. shabbos shoes, summer sandals, etc…
January 13, 2013 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm #1134509rebdonielMemberI find that I need a dress-looking shoe that is also very comfortable for shabbos, since I frequently walk miles on shabbos for the sake of bikur cholim, etc.
January 13, 2013 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm #1134510147ParticipantMichael Bloomberg has only had the same 2 pairs of shoes for the past 10 years. Does he keep 1 pair for Shabbos and 1 pair for weekdays? or is 6 days running in 1 pair of shoes, too long?
My husband tells me that all the halachois only refer to clothes but shoes are not included
Please ask your husband, if spectacles are also excluded from this Halocho?
January 13, 2013 8:05 pm at 8:05 pm #1134511snowbunny3318MemberIn order of price range:
Crocs makes flats for women that are made from crocs material (don’t know about men… but most likely…).
Clarks are very good for that purpose.
Cole Haan has nike soles, but look fancy.
