I would be very surprised if it doesn’t come out that the shooter was bullied/emotionally abused somewhere in his history. At least some (secular) schools are beginning to run anti-bullying programs, but this needs to be done somehow at the post-elementary and high school level as well, maybe particularly in programs that are known for high stress such as medical school. Perhaps candidates for enrollment should also be screened for their potential to be abusive to students who are not like themselves.

July 22, 2012 2:30 am at 2:30 am #887788147ParticipantFortunately, the saint:- Michael Bloomberg, has the cure. Outlaw guns, and get all guns off the streets of America.
Michael Bloomberg is so absolutely correct & on target. To quote the Mishna in Pirkei Ovos in transformed words:- “Marbei Guns >>>> Marbei Murders”.
Michael Bloomberg must draft a new amendment to undo the 2nd amendment, and outlaw the right to bear arms.

Thank you.
July 22, 2012 2:50 pm at 2:50 pm #887790EzratHashemMemberThe Chancellor at the college where this man received his undergraduate degree said he was an honors student in a very rigorous course of study, one of the most difficult and challenging majors in the college. He was described as a student who was the “top of the top”. So the question begs to be asked, how does he go from there to being a mass murderer so quickly? He is described as a loner, and a highly intelligent loner is often a target for abusers. Another explanation might be that this type of individual is often a perfectionist and very demanding of himself. If he wasn’t succeeding in the very competetive atmosphere in his field in the graduate program, it may have caused him to snap.

Many of the Nazis who were responsible for designing and implementing the Final Solution were reputable doctors.

July 24, 2012 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #887793✡onegoal™Participant147- I have an uncle in Texas who owns many guns and carries one with him all the time. I spoke with him about it a little and he said the because guns are legal, nobody will do anything stupid because they will probably get shot by someone who sees them. If you pull out a gun you are committing suicide. I live in chicago where you can’t carry guns around with you and there are a good 5 deaths a weekend. That doesn’t happen in Texas. Maybe everybody should be allowed to carry a gun, that way we’ll all be safer. The people who are murdering will get the guns regardless, so at least we’ll have one too so that we can defend ourselves.
July 25, 2012 6:37 am at 6:37 am #887794pcozMemberthere seems to be a lot of kefirah in bechirah in this thread

July 26, 2012 2:37 am at 2:37 am #887796pcozMemberAre you sure? that means that you are saying that you have a more accurate understanding of reality than the Torah
July 26, 2012 4:33 am at 4:33 am #887797✡onegoal™ParticipantNo, I’m not sure how you derived that from what I said.
July 26, 2012 4:56 am at 4:56 am #887798yeshivishsocratesMemberonegoal, no disrespect intended but I THINK, you missed what pcoz was complaining about. And pcoz, you missed his missing!
One goal, he meant that by blaming peoples misdemeanours on the abuse that they suffered, you are absolving them of the blame the bechira forces on them. I think thats what he meant.

July 26, 2012 11:56 am at 11:56 am #887802arutz sheva is betterParticipantSeveral years ago there was a mass killing on the LIRR by a Colin Ferguson. I offered to help defend him. The defense was going to be that the laws of murder are too vague to mean anything. Also we found out various interesting things. Will post more later but have to run to mincha now
July 26, 2012 3:04 pm at 3:04 pm #887805CsarMemberMODS:
Please reread poster “arutz sheva is better”‘s last comment here. It has curse words AND defends a mass murderer.
July 26, 2012 3:21 pm at 3:21 pm #887806KozovMemberPcoz, Hashem judges a person only for what he did, not what he didn’t do, but when He does, He takes the individual circumstances into account. That shouldn’t be beyond us either.
July 26, 2012 5:21 pm at 5:21 pm #887807HealthParticipantPBA – What Is your point? And who are you responding to?
July 26, 2012 11:18 pm at 11:18 pm #887808pcozMemberKozov – refer to Rational Irrational Man (which has a haskmoh from Reb Moshe – if my memory serves me correctly). He says that the American idea of extenuating emotional circumstances and the Torah’s idea of extenuating emotional circumstances is rachok mizrach mimaarav.
If a person can sanguinely sit in court a day after murdering innocent people – this is not the shoteh which the halacha might exonerate from responsibility.
July 27, 2012 1:48 am at 1:48 am #887809KozovMemberPcoz I was not talking about being a shoteh that Halacha would exonerate or American law, and I assume that EzratHashem wasn’t either, I was talking about comparing somebody whose Teva is more inclined towards wrongdoing than somebody else or whose circumstances effected a greater tendency towards evil than someine else’s. And I’m not neccessarily able to read books on one foot. Maybe you could have explained the distinction in short in addition to reffering the book.
July 27, 2012 2:41 am at 2:41 am #887810pcozMemberno teasing intended – compare to kovetz mamorim from Reb Elchonon – he says every person has the bechirah to be able to not do the things that the Torah says they should not do – he includes goyim for the 7 mitzvos benei noach – which includes retzichah
July 27, 2012 3:05 am at 3:05 am #887811KozovMemberI dont know who that was intended for but that vaiter does not contradict what i said.
