June 4, 2012 2:19 am at 2:19 am #878132MDGParticipantPlease elaborate on your lack of understanding.
June 4, 2012 3:30 am at 3:30 am #878133Sam2ParticipantThere’s no problem whatsoever with wearing them. Mimah Nafshach. If they’re a Begged then you’re fine. And if not then they’re not Chayav in Tzitzis. The only issue with them is whether or not it’s Muttar to make a Brachah on them. R’ Moshe says they’re not clothing and that making a Brachah on them is a Brachah Levatalah. The Tzitz Eliezer says they’re okay, if I recall correctly. It’s very, very hard to be Meikel anywhere on an issue like this K’negged Rav Moshe, and I’d even be willing to say that anyone who wants to wear them in America doesn’t even have a legitimate Shittah to rely upon to make a Brachah.
June 4, 2012 3:32 am at 3:32 am #878134lakewhutParticipantWhy not
June 4, 2012 3:51 am at 3:51 am #878135Sam2ParticipantBy the way, it’s a common misconception that the issue with mesh is that it’s mesh. That’s not the problem. Mesh (the style) is woven and is a Begged. The issue is that the mesh Tzitzis are made out of nylon, which is a synthetic material. If I would make “mesh” Tzitzis out of cotton then everyone agrees that I can wear them with a Brachah. The Machlokes I mentioned above is about Tzitzis made from synthetic materials.
June 4, 2012 5:33 am at 5:33 am #878136yitayningwutParticipantSam – the shaila is with wearing them on Shabbos.
June 4, 2012 1:54 pm at 1:54 pm #878137Sam2ParticipantYitay: Ooh, that is a good additional problem. Never thought of that one. But it’s only Shayach where there’s no Eruv. I’m not sure it’s a problem though. Even if it’s not a Begged it’s still a Malbush, and if you want to assume that at the very least there’s a Safek whether it’s a Begged or not (though in America K’negged an accepted P’sak of R’ Moshe I don’t know if the opposing Shittos can even count to make this a Safek) then wearing the Tzitzis to be Yotzei the Safek should count as a Noi.
June 4, 2012 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #878138sam4321ParticipantRav Moshe held one does not make a bracha on them. However,Rav Sternburch(Tshuvas v’hanhagos in chelek 5) discusses this and he seems to hold that it is considered a beged aand it is no problem at alll have not seen it in a while though.
Yitay: Whats the problem on shabbas if one holds it is a beged and any beged is a mitzvah D’orasia?
June 4, 2012 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm #878139ItcheSrulikMemberSam2: What about cotton-poly which many of the “cotton” tzitzis used to be made of?
June 5, 2012 12:18 am at 12:18 am #878140Sam2ParticipantItche: Those are Rov cotton, right? It’s B’feirush that you go Basar Rov by determining if it’s a Begged or not.
June 5, 2012 1:28 am at 1:28 am #878141sam4321ParticipantThe Shulchan Halevi(Rav Belsky) 4 says that a mesh beged is patur from tzitzis and if one makes tzitzis he is not mekaem the mitzvah and if he wears it on shabbas there is an issur of hotzah.
June 5, 2012 1:54 am at 1:54 am #878142sam4321ParticipantSam2: if you read the shulchan Halevi the mesh is a problem as well as synthetic.
June 5, 2012 2:24 am at 2:24 am #878143Sam2ParticipantSam4: I am unclear with the Shulchan Haleivi but I see no reason why mesh itself would be a problem. It’s woven, isn’t it?
June 5, 2012 4:08 am at 4:08 am #878144147ParticipantI make my benediction on a Tallis Godol & hence absolve my Tallis Kotton from a Berocho.
This sounds to me like a very simple solution to whether Tzitzis on mesh fabric qualify for a benediction.
Every Jewish male should be wearing a Tallis Godol whilst reciting his morning prayers, so that no-one feels discriminated Chas v’Sholom based on their marital status.
June 5, 2012 6:02 am at 6:02 am #878145RABBAIMParticipantMy Rabbaim have told me that mesh is a problem and would be a problem no matter what material it is made of. Why? Because the definition or condition of being a beged is that one would wear this type of material in public and not be embarrassed. That means even if you were covered from head to foot with nothing but clothing made from this material, if the material itself does not provide the covering which would enable one to comfortable walk amongst “normal” people then it is not a beged. No one would wear an entire garment made from see through material and walk in a Torahdiker neighborhood.

June 5, 2012 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #878147thewaddlingduckMemberWhy is this discussion useful? If you have a shi’eilah ask your Rav, not annonymous bloggers!
